Big fan of the MATE. Use it all the time on M11. Only thing it can’t do is shallow DOF. Low light no problem with M10/M11. Character is very suitable for b/w photography with a slightly vintage look.

This Leica MATE is a versatile lens for travelling, a 90mm f4 lens might be added for all purpose as well!

My favourite Leica lens, great for travelling. I usually forego a 90 and take a 135 as part of my minimalist kit.

I have found 2 in UK circa £2750 I almost bought ti for a travel lens for my M11 or SL2 but decided if they are still available after Christmas & I don't spend too much get one of them if available. I managed to find an unboxed WATE kit recently & bought that. Fantastic lens for street work & inside buildings. Best buy except my 28mm Summicron.

Well done with the WATE lens Peter. I hear it's a good one. Very reserved regarding the MATE lens. You are mentally stronger than many of us :)

Years ago I seriously contemplated getting the WATE 16-18-21 lens. Price and slower f/4 made me going with similar CV prime lenses instead. Never considered the MATE as shown here since I already had faster prime lenses in the same focal lengths.

Thanks! People seem to say the WATE is the best of the 2.

Are you planning on reviewing the new Voigtlander 35mm f1,5 Nokton vintage? Would be nice. The lens looks really good but haven’t found a reliable review of it yet.

Please do the WATE lens!! I have the longer lengths covered, but I’d REALLY like an all in one wide length coverage lens!! As usual, great video… Lol, you cost me so much$$, but still loving ya!! Thanks! CC

Matt, thanks for this review. I'd overlooked this lens but I do see its merits. Did you happen to take any images with a red filter?

I like my MATE very much. ☺️ It’s a great travel lens. I take it on trips along with a 75mm (and sometimes a 21mm). One thing to note with the ~40mm setting: you lose infinity focus so you can only focus at close range. EVF or rear LCD mandatory on M cameras. The WATE is a true zoom lens in that you can use it anywhere in its 16-21mm range. The MATE isn’t…it goes wonky in-between its focal length detents. The 40mm thing just happens to be a useful form of wonky. 🤣
@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom2 жыл бұрын
Thanks David, I like the useful form of wonky description! :) I will try to review a WATE next year

@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I'm not. After thousands of images the aperture ring was loose. Nobody but Leica will touch them. With my M-P240, the EVF and my Vario-Elmar 35-70 R lens the images are far better and if I need 28mm on the run my TTArtisan 28mm f5.6 is just dandy. Plus I got $2500. for it which is what I originally paid. Thanks again for your always great posts.
