I KNOW I'm biased. But if you liked the Q, you'll love the Q2. If you loved the Q, you may STILL want to upgrade to the Q2. And if you didn't like the Q, you may love the Q2 anyway.

Or not, and that's fine - in the end, it's always the person behind the camera who makes the image; the gear is simply the means by which that image is captured; and there are much less expensive options that may represent vastly better tradeoffs for you (including ones with articulating screens and IBIS!)

Never ran out of battery, never needed 24mm or 35mm, never needed the f:1.4, never need 47 meg pixel. If you are in the Market for this kind of Camera and you have money, get the Q and you will love it. Q2 will give you more stuff that you'd not miss on the Q. I took it to Iceland, Istanbul, Cayman, LA and I could not be happier. If you are a troll, nothing will ever make you happy!

The Q2 (or the Q-series to be more precise) has been an 'objet du désir' for quite some time now. And taking a page from my father's book, who bought a long desired VW camper van from the inheritance my grandfather left him, I sold my Fujifilm X100V and my Fujifilm X-T1 and together with the small part of the inheritance my father gave me, bought the Q2 a few months back. Couldn't be happier. Thank you Hugh, for your insights and inspiration.

I got unduly excited when I thought the title was saying it was 1/4 of the M10 price (rather than M10 and lens)!! Still , in Leica world this seems a heck of a bargain! Now, what is the Zeiss ZX1 going to bring to the table?

Really feel you on the 40mm for more contextual portraits - what a great focal length, I wish there was a compact that catered to it. Then again, a GX9 (or used GX80/85) with Panasonic's 20 1.7 isn't exactly conspicuous either - and then there's the flexibility of an ILC.. This is looking like a fantastic camera, and out of my price range as it may, and likely will continue to be, your videos make me appreciate Leicas from another angle than just the same old "marvelling at gems in the storefront" kinda way. And I really appreciate that.

Jenny, I always enjoy your take -- and pretty much always agree with you! Like the GX9 - I think it's always top of list when looking for a more affordable, real world option for great compact street work. Thanks for weighing in.

Ok, as mentioned before, I am 2/3rds into a two week European trip. I am sitting at the airport outside Stockholm waiting to return to London with my Hasselblad 500 C/M at my side. My back hurts, but I anticipate the joy of my images when developed in a few weeks. This camera, the Q2, small agile and with resolution to beat the band, it it the reason to join the 21st century? Hold that thought. This moment, the flight had been announced as delayed. And my tired feet and back would appreciate a smaller, light wait camera that will not rob my eye of the resolution I demand. I assure you, in two weeks, in my darkroom, my tired back will be forgotten and the only thing that will matter is the image. Maybe I need to try one of these modern joys. Charlie

I wonder if there will ever come a time when Leica offers IBIS - if not, what would be the reason for retaining a fixed sensor when increasing sensor resolution begins to test the user's skill in compensating for camera shake? Surely Leica has the mechanical and electronic engineering expertise to implement such technology, and cost should be of quite low importance given its affluent user base. Most competitors(?), with the notable exception of Canon, offer a magic anti-vibe sensor option within their line-up.

Yes, this new camera must be early fruit of the L-Alliance. No way an organization or company can make that big a leap in technology that quickly without some sort of influx of outside help. It rarely happens. That looks to be an amazing camera. The quality of the imagery looks fantastic. Not a Leica fan myself but it's hard not to think about it with your enthusiasm!

Thanks for the review, Hugh! I always love hearing your thoughts and insights about a new launch, but I also really enjoy seeing your environmental street photography portraits, regardless of camera. The Q2 is certainly an interesting concept, making use of a high-res sensor to provide the functionality of a range of focal lengths with just one excellent and fast lens. The nice thing is that lens remains an f/1.7 lens regardless of the range of focal lengths you can set. For me personally, the wondrous little X100F remains my street photography camera of choice and with respect an outlay of 5 large... well, I'd be using that capital outlay for a digital MF system that begins the designation, "GF".... Cheers, Stephen.

Gratitude and compliments to the concentration evidenced here, on the enduring values of photographers raised on the rangefinder Leica, and the probably greater commitments of immigrants to the experience in later life. We know what this perspective is. Given the verification registered in this review, of the stunning value offered in the Q2, may I offer the thought that the camera represents, to anyone who has deferred exploring the 28mm focal length in his own activity, this glorious package is priced beneath par for the value (to say nothing of price) of the lens, itself. An enthusiast for the M10 series need sacrifice nothing, if he's willing to exploit Leica's empathy for high-speed medium wide-angle responsiveness in the diminutive, impertinent thing, which travels with his M kit as a convenience without drawbacks.

Let's accept it, we all are biased when it comes to Leica. Some are biased towards an opinion that Leica cameras are expensive & substandard piece of equipment while others are biased towards the feel and inspiration that only a Leica can facilitate them with. I, just like you, belong to the latter genus of creatives and I absolutely love anything with the name Leica on it. Even though I cannot afford any of it just yet. But I am determined that the first gift I'll buy myself when I will be in a position to do so will be a Leica. I absolutely loved your review of the Q2. I have enjoyed each one of your videos on various Leica cameras. Please keep them coming. It is only you, I believe, who does justice to the reviews of gear with a red dot. Your videos perfectly capture what it feels like to shoot with a Leica through their sedate nature. They're almost like a heartfelt love letter to the camera brand we have come to love so much, though it occasionally breaks our heart too by not giving us all that we want. But then that is also one of the many reasons our relationship continues.

Q2-M all the way. Loved the Q2, yes it saved my bacon several times, but the Q2-M is pure pudding for a monochrom fetish…. It’s never let me down and never complains about being 2nd fiddle to the M246 paired with my Noct 1.2 (1966 version) or M10-M & Noct 75mm. A bigger privilege to have these 3 in my bag one could never know. And in a pinch on the fly, anything - even a rainstorm, the aforementioned Q2-M is my loyal wingman. small light and fast. Swift and certain!

Fascinating - as Spock would have said. Another great Leica review, although will there ever be another box set in the style of the Leica SL quadrilogy? A camera review encased in a grand sweep of European history, fascism, world war and the birth of miniature format photography: what a wonderful thing! Bravo, Leica for sticking to its Q format in an age where reviewers seem obsessed with the accrual of more and more features rather than attention to basics, executed with precision and wisdom. My heart is heavy, though. A fixed lens has to be the right one for its owner, and 28mm is too wide for me. A 40mm 1:1.8 or 1:2 cropping to 55mm would have me running to the Leica Store, so for now I’ll leave my piggy bank in one piece until it’s heavy enough for that CL.

Original q was a breakthrough camera for me, I use medium format normally. I use the q for 1/1000th work in the studio mostly. When I work with dancers. I just wish I could shoot tethered with it...tested the phase 150mp, that’s special with backlit sensor. But medium format is so slow compared to the q. For those who are interested, you can shoot 15 images on a 300mb card before it need 25 seconds to clear the buffer. Important if you shoot moving subjects..

As you also said it adressed most if not all my cons of the first Q, and it really looks like the ONE camera you would ever need( even though we know that is never going to happen!). Rafa Laperal good question. I can’t say with certainty, as I no longer have the camera and am simply not in a position to evaluate case by case. However: while the body shell dimensions are, I believe, identical, the battery is not nor is the right control wheel. Anything that relies on those two things being unchanged may not work as well or at all.

'THIS GIVES THE OPTION TO GO TO MANUAL MORE OFTEN -WHICH IS A JOY' Love that sentence, for those MF lenses uses this is one of the attributes to shooting MF lenses, seeing the results of the image in front of you while you interact with the lens giving you that satisfaction of what you want and need, basically all is driven by choice so in letting the camera or lens allowing you to take control of the focusing is even more so rewarding. EVF is an amazing technology that sees to you seeing the fruits of your labor (manual focusing) more clearly increasing once involvement in the business of photography.

Hello Hugh, first of all thank you, I really enjoy this channel. I have a technical question regarding the digital zoom. If the lens is a 28mm, when you crop to 50mm, you get a 50mm field of view but the image has the 28mm focal character right? if you take a portrait with the 50mm crop, the portrait is going to have the 28mm distortion. Or I'm missing something here?
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
Henry Deletra you are exactly right - HOWEVER: this is what I was talking about when I spoke of perspective distortion (which another viewer in our little community corrected me on, though for the life of me I don’t remember the exact term): because of the crop, you can move farther away from the subject, reducing that “spoon reflection” kind of distortion. Make sense?

@@3BMEP I went to the Leica store and shot a few picture with the Q2. I didn't had the time to dive into all the cameras settings, I just went to the street in front of the store and took a few snapshots. Coming from the M10 I wanted to test the autofocus, and if there were distortion with the digital zoom crop. When I shoot I saw clipping in many images (the sky was very white/bright) so be careful with the overexpose, but for my surprise it was very easy to recover detail in post, even more than with the M10 imo. The files were gorgeous, a lot of detail and very very sharp. I took a few portraits with the 50mm crop and the 75mm and seriously, is hard to imagine that they were taken with a 28mm lens. I d'ont know if is true but in the Leica store they told me the the Q2 has a distortion correction in camera when you use the crops. I would like to make more tests but this camera could be a keeper. I think actually, that the Q represents more the M spirit that the actual M. I think Cartier-Bresson if given the choice would probably took the Q (hahaha).

The sensor is a Tower Jazz. They now launch the M10 R with 47MP. I would love Leica takes the jump with an M11 and offers an EVF version. I know about the traditionalists and the photographic pros and cons of that. But as a choice for blind bats like me it would be great. Also, no more ugly pimple on the M.

It’s coming to the point where I really want a Leica video from you every other day. Hop to! IMO the original Q pointed to a new paradigm, one which I have been contemplating for a while now: larger sensors for wide-angle, smaller ones for telephoto. Or, in this case, one sensor, one lens. Which is better: a Micro 4/3 body with a compact standard zoom, or the Q2? How about that for a thought experiment? Note, too, the performance of the Q2 compared to the high res DSLRs from Sony, Pentax, Canon and Nikon. If you wanted to replicate the functionality of the Q series with these DSLRs, you’d be going backwards in every possible way. I think that Leica probably got video wrong here, though. You should be able to get 4K video in 28, 35 & 50mm modes. Did Leica enable this? I bet they didn’t! I hate* to be a nitpick, but what you referred to as ‘perspective distortion’ is actually volumetric anamorphosis. Unless you meant something else. *By hate I mean love. :-P

I'm writing this from a different prospective than I would have ordinairly... yesterday, the Leica Store here in San Francisco combined the opening reception for their current exhibition with the rollout of the Q2 (as well as a special version of the Monochrome... but hold that thought). I did indeed have a chance to get my grubby paws on a Q2. Impressions? Pretty much everything you reported on it (I didn't have the opportunity to actually take it out for a week...) But, I do like it. Not that I would give up my current stable of cameras, but still it sounds like it would be worth owning. I put my name on their list...

you should convince Leica to add in a menu an option to add a 40mm crop. It would be cool to use the function button to switch between crops that one has selected in the menu like it was possible on the GRII. if it had that option and a 4;3 option (cost nothing to do that with an EVF camera) I would buy it right away

But I stop when I realize ‘well, but then Lenses!’ This combo is ideal. For me, the perfect rangefinder lens is a 35. I owned a Biogon for many years. As I age, I worry about manual focus. So, AF. And this idea, that I could see either a 28 or a 35 image with AF and close-up... oh baby.

Guillaume Zammith It’s all about your preferred field of view and purpose. If you lean mostly toward the first choice in each pair, get the Q2. If budget is an issue; if you intend to print large; if you like the field of view, get the Q2. In the UK a used Q will cost you nearly 3k and a new one is just over 3.7k, so when you think that you can have the Q2 for just over 4k new that's pretty good value for money... So you could sell the Q2 after say 4 years of use and maybe reclaim 75% of your outlay, so this camera is only costing you 1k over 4 years......

I'm a big fan of your videos Hugh, but I wanted to point out that we had to sit through 8 advertisements to get to the end ( hope I counted right). There were 4 brought in by KZbin and 4 embedded in the video itself (3 for SquareSpace and 1 for your workshop in New York). While I am all for advertising I found, in this case, that the ads distracted significantly from the enjoyment of your video. The first one cut you off mid-sentence. Later, I wanted to rewind because I missed a quick shot of yours, but as soon as I rewound I got an ad. Most of the reviews of the Q1/Q2 discuss the "either or": Is it a gateway camera before the M? Is it a substitute for an M. But let me ask (And your "Now I want a Q2 on top of the CL" kind of jumped the gun on me...): What would you think about having both? M240 for example, Or M246 and the Q2? Maybe at a price of a 28 lux+some, we can get the entire package? Is it obsolete? Where do you (If at all) see logic in such a combination (Not causing one to think for hours with which camera to go outside... As it happens today)?
@3BMEP
@3BMEP 5 жыл бұрын
Sharon Leibel The Q2 is a bit of a Rorschach test. Gateway to the M for some, adjunct to others, stand-alone to others again. I prefer the flexibility of interchangeable lenses, and I like small - which is why I enjoy the CL and TL2. But light and small becomes bigger and heavier as one adds lenses. This is why the Q2 is so appealing to me: it’s an alternative to the CL such that sometimes I’d be willing to bring the CL and glass, other times I wouldn’t - which is where the Q2 is beautiful.
@sharonleibel
@sharonleibel 5 жыл бұрын
That’s a very good analogy. And I can relate to the “stuck with one lens” thing, Especially when it’s a 28 (most people commented that if it was a 35? they wouldn’t think twice...) I can see why most people see it as a great all-arounder, But speaking the CL: Isn’t it just a Leica without the Leica advantages of being full frame? An APS-C camera in a brand that takes pride in being the first full frame mirrorless body ? Doesn’t the CL kind of defeats the Leica advantage and makes it the same as others (Obviously, X100F comes to mind)?

Leica makes beautiful compact camera cases for the X1, X2, D-Lux, C-Lux, and other Panasonic-made Leicas (the X1 and X2 were made by Leica). Look up the 19554 case for the D-Lux7 camera - it fits the camera perfectly with no room to spare, fully enclosed and protecting the lens, and it looks elegant - not like the old-fashioned camera cases. The point of this is that Leica is making a $5k compact camera with the Q2, and then denying that it's a compact camera by not providing a compact case - only providing ugly photographer cases that are used for system cameras. If Leica were to get their heads out of the sand on this Q2, it would be to provide the elegant carry case type that is available for all of their other compact non-system cameras. The point of that is to keep people focused on what the Q2 really is, and make it fun to carry most places without a camera bag or a half-cover that doesn't protect the lens. I've been using these cases for 15 years, and they make a night-and-day difference in the pleasure of owning a compact Leica camera.
