IMHO there are two people at the pinnacle of the bewildering space of modern camera reviews (some other great reviewers exist as well ). Gerald Undone the greatest of the technical reviewers and Hugh. Hugh’s capacity to grasp the whole space with startling clarity is phenomenal. If the brand captains of the camera industry don’t pay the strictest attention to what he has to say they are likely to suffer the consequences. Thanks again for your work.

When I switched to mirrorless went with f/4s for my trinity. I wanted to maintain the small size and lighter equipment. Plus, the cleaner ISO range I felt comfortable. Then I got super fast primes to the “cinematic” look.

Nice comments on this lens! Actually, you're spot on on the Sony system with the alternatives 16-25 G, 24-50 G: - if you have an A7R V you can use the crop factor to have similar reach. For me, weight is important since I often carry gear up the mountains... Helpful insight, really! Thanks

I use a s5iix for stills and video ( portraits, clubs/events, lowlight scenarios, have the 24-70 s pro, sl 50 summilux and 90 apo) Would you rather pair it with a sl2 for stills? Or would sl3 be able to replace my s5iix. Or would you rather sell it all and go all in with nikon z with the 24-70, 50 1.2 + 135 plena( curious how they will turn out with RED tech)

I had many full frame Nikon cameras in the past and when the Z line came out I decided to purchase the z6 first generation and i love it. But two months I dropped this camera on one of my trips in Greece and so i decided to look about buying the Z6ii or Z7ii, but after long hours of reading reviews about the z8. I decided this is what I want. I ordered the nikon Z 180-600 lens and the Z8 this week. I cant wait to try them since i love st photography and wild life :). Also will try it with my nikon 500 f4 VRll, nikon z 24-70 f2.8 and other good lenses

I just bought a beat up but functionally perfect GH5 with the 25/1.7 lens for a mere US $ 290. I have been testing the HLG video and it has been blowing my mind with the dynamic range, I am still learning and just dropping my jaws every time I discover video centric tools in the camera. I don’t edit my videos with my Fujifilm X-T2 (as I love the colours straight out of the camera) and do love my Canon M6 (my first camera) but this GH5 video capabilities are just overwhelming for the price I bought! I am staying away from Sony at all costs, I don’t love those cameras at all. 😂😅 Auto focus is probably the last thing I need in a camera.

Hmmmm,, I have the original in L mount... tossing around the Idea of trading up. I've circled the Leica SL2 --(like I did the CL for months. no triggeer pulled),, I would use either only for landscape stills. Instead, I think I will ward off red dot fever, buy a nice used Lumix S1R and use the money to travel to the places I want to take shots at,, I calculate coming out $3600 - 4100 ahead cash wise. What do you think of that?

Great video, especially the thought-provoking conclusion. Everyone is different. In my case I have the Sigma 24-70 gen 1 and really love it, but I miss the aperture ring - badly. I really like the tactile function of aperture control. So much so that before this announcement, I was considering trading in the Sigma for the Sony GM II for the slight improvement in weight but critically for direct aperture control. Now I have a choice. For me focus was never a problem with the original Sigma. Yup, different folks, different priorities. Having choices is pretty awesome for Sony users.

So enjoy your videos and the images. Disagree on one comment if deliberately taken out of context (and of course your video totally makes this point) Canon have not locked out the competition, it’s a lock in to the customer’s detriment. Customers might move into Nikon, to have both the pure fun of having choices, and being able to mix and match around their particular focus areas. Chose Nikon, bought a 140 - 500 mm Tamron, loved this genre so much, that I then moved up the Nikon food chain. Prior to moving into Nikon, rented Nikons, Sonys and Canons for a couple of days each. Found all amazing, they are. Then decided on Nikon, found less inherent enjoyment of using the Sony and so, though I really liked the handling of Canon, chose the Nikon based purely on the open system and fun of choice. So glad I did. Open platform = new directions for my passion. Your channel is fabulous, really well made, thoughtful and superb interludes with the images. Thank you (and Claudia).

Good stuff as usual! I don't shoot 35mm at all, I started back in 2015 with a Nikon, D750 (Currently own a Zf) a 40mm lens and have always stood there for both street and some portrait. Hell I don't even own a "nifty fifty" (16,28,40,85,135) Enough with rambles and to my point. My only grudge with Voigt is the fact that they haven't done anything for the 28mm crowd, and Thypoch just already announced the same Leica lens but for the Z-mount (At last no need for the Leica-Zmount converter any more) In both 35mm and 28mm @f1.4. So therefore in the pro vs cons personal grand scheme of things as a 28mm shooter, Thypoch has a very compelling offering... Cheers!

For me, the biggest decision for me is now which standard zoom do I get? Not the GM II unless I win the lottery. The DG DN II is now the value king. I don't think this is even arguable. The 24-50 G might be what I most want in a standard zoom, but the optics of the DG DN II are slightly better and the 70mm might be great for portraits/landscapes occasionally. The 20-70 G is, as you said, a goddamn unicorn. Personally not my favorite for what I'm shooting right now, but if my life ever slows down and I start actually going places I might like this lens the best. Where are you and Claudia at? Apologies if this is answered in video, paused near the ~5 minute mark.

@@3BMEP Sony artificially cripples all Sigma Linear Motor Glass with 15 FPS AF-C, in order to protect Native Glass. They are cowards and should allow Sigma to push competition and spur more innovation. Instead Sony seeks to stifle innovation with their monopoly on sensor technology and imposing artificial limits on Speed bodies

Hugh, just off piste a little if you don't mind so a question without notice. You have a choice of one of two cameras, Hasselblad or Leica, which way do you jump? Lenses, etc, aren't part of the consideration, it's one manufacturer over the other.
@Bayonet18093 күн бұрын
For the sake of clarification in advance of Hugh's reply, do you have specific systems in mind for the comparison? The H and V systems are very different, as are the Q, SL, and M.
@3BMEP3 күн бұрын
It’s not a well formulated question because a) lenses matter profoundly; and b) what I choose is based on my wants, needs,and priorities which may or may not be anyone else’s. With this written: for our street work, our Leica Q3 and SL3 are faster; more fully buttoned up; and more versatile than our X2D. Our Q3 is much smaller, lighter and easier to carry than either of them, but more limited. Yet the X2D is simply an easier system for me than our M11 because my eyesight isn’t what it was and the X2D has IBIS and an articulating screen (my knees aren’t what they used to be either). The X2D has the highest image quality of all of them when circumstances allow me to coax the best out of each system. If I could only have one body among these four, it would be the SL3, but I’d be happier to carry the Q3. But if I were living and shooting in Tuscany shooting at Tuscan speed) it would be the X2D.

Thoughtful video. Yes I think that we are at an inflection point in lens design and use thanks to software improvements. My current Sony setup is to use the 20-70, and when, rarely, speed or resolution is needed revert to a prime. Yes, occasional lens changes, but the around the neck carry is light. I also must reflect that HCB did his work mostly with a 50mm 3.5 or 2.0 stating that sharpness is a bourgeois concept. BTW nice posted Japan images.

Thanks a lot for this video. A very interesting point of view. I myself have a very nice Canon equipment and as an old man coming from analogue photography I always miss the old way of taking fotos. 12 pictures on a 6x6 film. Thinking about instead of shooting like with a machine gun. I want the camera to slow me down, not to make me nervous. This is why I think about buying a Hasselblad. Taking time and coming home with the best result. My Canon 1Dx2 is a wonderful tool and the prime lenses are really great. Especially the 85/1.2, the 300/2.8 and the 24-70/2.8. But I need a camera for the slow moments. And I believe the Hasselblad will bring it back. Again, thanks a lot for your review! It helps a lot.

The A7CR is what I chose over a Leica Q3. Budget was a concern, the Q3 had months of back-order, and I absolutely need long interchangeable lenses. Everything you said about the poor EVF and mediocre screen is valid, but you get use to the menu system, you can customise what you need and it becomes an efficient top-quality photo power tool.

I was really hoping this company was going to be more competitively priced because I love the attention to design, etc. But these days few have the additional income to pay way more for a substantially less versatile option. Especially because it’s not as if the lights that offer more for less are poorly designed. They just have less personality. And really, how much personality does a light need?

Very nice video and breakdown. For me the use of the older DSLR's comes from their incredible intuitive controls and the immediacy of how they react. It's simple and fast to change in the field without digging into any menus. But beyond that, the value in buying the MANY incredible F Mount professional lenses of the past is my biggest selling point on them. I don't think I'll ever stop using the Nikkor 400mm f/3.5

I also grew up with film and built my own darkroom - 35mm, medium and large format. Today, I have a GFX-50s with the Fuji adapter on the back of a Cambo 45N - and am in heaven. The workflow is still much slower and more deliberate than say using my Fuji X-T5 or Lumix LX-100ii hand held. Since I only use the Cambo in the studio (portraits and small product), its a tool in my toolbox.
