Leica recently released a new Firmware (4.0) for the Q2 which actually fixed or improved many of the "issues" with the Q2 that I mentioned in this video (JPEGs, Dynamic Range, Metering, Video Codecs and more). Check out my new video about the Firmware Update here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaKsZ4RjprGepNk

Well presented comparison and food for thought. Some very nice pics as well. Thank you. I own a Q2M and a X100V. Those do not "compete" against each other. But I radically disagree with your conclusion that Fuji files "fall apart" that easily. I use SOOC Fuji jpegs for backgrounds and screensavers on my 27", and they look perfect. I have printed some to A2 format and they look perfect as well. They are solid. The whole film simulations/recipes paradigm is a fantastic and intuitive way to generate differentiated series of pictures, with recognisable consistency within the series. I visited Lisbon last week with the X100v as my only camera and used a single recipe for the whole trip. I am delighted by the resulting series. The memories I will keep of that trip will be "coloured" by those pictures. They are how I will remember Lisbon. Such consistency of rendering is harder to achieve with other systems, even if you apply identical presets to raw files in LR. The fact that you get that sooc is a considerable time saving bonus. I also do not agree that there is a contradiction between "instagram" pics and "family souvenirs" pics, on the contrary. No doubt the standard Q2 has the "cropability" advantage of much higher resolution, which, combined with a 28mm lens, increases flexibility, but the X100V and other current generation Fujifilm cameras provide more than enough quality for large prints and the largest screens.

He is right. fuji jpeg output looks nice on its own lcd and phone screen, but when looking it on computer lcd, they really looks plasticky and artificial, particularly on busy foliage or low light background. Same for all fuji x series camera. I own fuji xt3 , xt4, x100v, their sooc jpeg have same characteristics

@@kailimedia funny how we can experience things so differently. An important thing to do with Fuji in-camera settings is to permanently cancel all noise reduction (put NR at -4), as NR can induce the "plasticky" rendering you mention, on skin tones in particular. I prefer a little "grain" (noise) to any smudge. If you really want to reduce "grain", better to do so in PP on the raw file. Like you probably, I have experience with high end cameras from different brands (APS-C and FF) but I reach the opposite conclusion: for me, Fujifilm provides the best out of camera jpeg results on the market today. Again, important to permanently set NR at -4 for portraits and landscapes. Best wishes!

I definitely looked at both of these cameras. Based on my needs the 28mm lens on the Leica was much more of a differentiator. I currently have a 28-70 lens on my DSLR and I’m constantly shooting at 28. The other deciding factor is that I shoot at night a lot so the full frame sensor is going to give me better low light capabilities. For my needs, the extra costs for the Q2 was justified and I’ve never regretted it.

Nice video comparison thanks! Another good point that you missed i think is the tilting screen on the X100V vs the fixed screen on the Q2. Tilting screen gives you more choices of shooting angles and allows you to be even more creative. Looks like the new Q3 will have a tilting screen and I think this implementation alone will make it even more successful.

But I bought another one lol, there is something magic about it and the images it takes. I don’t have a Q2 nor a 100-V, but bought a 100F which i still have. The F is a nice camera but the lens was too soft on the sides and the results at high ISO were unusable. So I decided to by the Q. (1). It felt crazy because of the price, but it is worth every penny. The Q doesn’t have any of the defects of the Fuji, and the color is so much better. I won’t miss the magentas. I also prefer the depth of field, the detail and the dynamic range. Said that, if you don’t use a camera professionally, one can live with the Fuji at 25% of the price and still feel happy.

I was a Fujifilm user for 5 years. XT2, XT3, XH1 and X100F. I transitioned to Full Frame via Canon EOS R with RF 15-35, 50, 85 glass. Last year I transitioned to Leica Q2, SL2 with 24-70 and M10 with a 50 lux. I can say that the Leica system has been my favorite so far. Q2 is the perfect walk around/family camera. I pair it with the M10 and 50 lux for a wonderful 28/50 combo. The SL2 I use for work. Content creation and portraits. I will say while I truly enjoy the Leica experience which includes the shooting experience, the tactile experience (build quality and ergonomics) and the amazing raw files, I sometimes miss the "fun" factor of Fujifilm and being able to switch film simulations on the go. That is where Fujifilm really shines... Their film simulations and less need for post processing because you're happy to just shoot jpeg. It's not a work camera but something to simply document life. It does that amazingly. APS-C falls short for me in low light shooting and shallow depth of field but there is a true charm to Fujifilm (especially the X100 line) that continues to tempt me. Maybe I'll come back for the next iteration when they include OIS or IBIS because I truly find OIS very helpful with the Q2.

An excellent video which helped me put my own views into perspective. Several years ago I sold my X-Pro2 & purchased a used Q, and was initially very disappointed. I couldn't afford 3 times the cost of a new Leica Q2, over an X100V. As mainly a JPEG shooter with 10 years experience with the Fuji X system cameras, I was used to manipulating the image "in camera", rather than post production. However I had grown to believe, the Fuji images first viewed on the camera screen & in the viewfinder - flattered to receive, hence the change to the Leica Q - where I very soon found out the opposite to be true. Yes there are inconsistencies in the white balance & the auto focus at times left a lot to be desired, but the overall quality of the full frame images were better (after all, Fuji images required post production attention before printing), and the excellent manual focus of the big 28mm/F1.7, overcomes any focussing difficulties. I just so loved the easy intuitive way the Q works & it's such a pleasure to use - it goes everywhere with me. I've always loved the wider angle perspective, and even 24meg pixels allows for some 35mm image cropping in camera Leica Grips & Batteries may be expensive, but 1/3rd party options are available. However I found the grip problem was resolved by the purchase of a used Leica 1/2 case, for less for not very much. Would I buy a new Leica Q3, possibly, but not for another 5 years - when I might be able to afford a good second hand example. In the meantime I'm glad I made the choice - I've even become quite adept at changing the white balance in camera when the situation requires!

Great review! I have tried both. They are quite different. The Fuji is perhaps the best small carry camera there is excluding the latest iPhone pro plus models. The Leica lens is in a completely different league but if you are even considering spending this much on the Leica you shd perhaps go the full way and either buy a used M with 35mm or 50mm lens or spend much less on a used Fuji GFX50R and the 50mm med format pancake lens. I am so happy I did the latter. Quality is in a different league.

Thank you, Tobias. This kind of honesty can only come from someone who uses these things and pays them with their own hard-earned cash. Interesting point about „Fuji colours“. Coming from a FF DSLR, I was pleasantly surprised by the SOOC photos from Fuji and got into the whole film recipes thing - until my wife said after a vacation: “our holiday pictures look like instagram, not like family pictures.” Due to RAW, I could “save” them in Lightroom. I think this gets overlooked a lot. Fuji can look incredibly post-processed - a no-go for documentation, I think. That being said: the “raw” colour science baked into the raw files is still a great basis for raw development - which I returned to after my JPEG “adventures”.

The fact that I was selling my pictures meant that my quality had to be better than everyone else’s . Unfortunately this was also supported by the expense of my equipment, RB67 and lenses plus two 35mm cameras and lenses. I had an X-100S for quite a while - took it with me to London and Paris and carried it with me everywhere at home (USA). It's a great camera! The various film simulations are very fun, and the image quality is excellent. Wayyyy better than a phone (even my 12 Pro). If I'm spending money on travelling, I'd like to have high quality pics instead of iphone ones when I get home! Later I tried a Q, and the image quality is just stellar. The difference is really noticeable a 27" 5K retina display. And, no more worrying about which film sim to use while I'm out and about (even tho they are fun). I just shoot, and do quick edits in Lightroom - the RAW files don't need much. The image stabilization is great. I have a Q2 now, which I've also taken with me to Europe, and it's even better than the original in all the right ways. It's weather sealed, 47MP (even using the 35mm crop it's still 30MP), image stabilized for my night and indoor pics... and the Q2 connects to my phone for location tagging which the Q didn't. Built like a tank but still not too heavy. It's the perfect travel cam. That said, I still recommend the Fujifilm X-100 series to my friends as a great travel camera, unless the person has $6K to spare. $6K _is_ a lot of money, and the X-100 is a really good alternative for an awful lot less. But if you can scrape up the cash, I have to say the Leica Q2 earns it. By the way, the recent firmware update to V4 is excellent. The GPS connection to my phone is rock solid now, and the other little tweaks are useful improvements.

1) First of all, I'm not 28mm guy, but rather 35mm, so yes, I'm a bit biased. 2) Fuji files do not fall apart so easily if you know what you are doing and under reasonable ISO settings (at night/indoors that might be another thing), but I'll agree that some simulations, and especially film recipes are better than others in that regard. 3) You can do wonders with fuji RAW files if developed in Capture One. Course Lightroom sucks anyway... 4) From your video I didn't see you had used UV filter in front of your X100V (maybe I'm wrong), what would make that camera not so weather resistant anymore. What could explain weird problems you had in the bad weather. 5) Yes Leica in general is ridiculously overpriced. 6) So ridiculously overpriced, that for the price of one Q2 you can buy: Fujifilm X-Pro3, with 18mm f1.4, and a thumb grip, with what you get that that Q2 combo. Optical viewfinder included. Not only that, you can buy the whole combo TWICE, and you'll still have a good amount of cash to spare. I'd spend that on alcohol, just saying...

My wife and I over here in Korea shoot Fuji (beginners with an xt4). Coincidentally, whenever she wears one of my watches, she almost always picks one of my Sinns over one of the more well known and expensive swiss watches or Grand Seiko. I dunno, perhaps that's not so unusual in Germany, but I thought it was curious since Sinn isn't well known here in Korea, America where I'm from, or in general internationally outside of watch enthusiast circles. Anecdotal, but sort of feels like there's some curious correlation there. Anyway, look forward to more of your thoughtful videos in the future.

The camera allows you to perform 'in-camera' crops, (35mm, 50mm and 75mm) albeit at a lower resolution, which for me, as a travel camera, mitigates the need to carry a larger interchangeable lens body and a few lenses.

Yes, it’s a good honest review. It come on, you can get batteries and thumb supports for a fraction of the cost. I also have issues with people complaining about the Leica AF. Yeah it’s not the bet out there, but then people raving about the M10/11. They don’t have AF, so just use the Q in manual. Ok so it doesn’t have rangefinder, but focus peaking works great.

A quick question, do you think that the Leica would survive being stuffed in a rucksack when snowboarding or mountain biking? I currently use my X100V which has proved robust, but I worry with the optical stabiliser in the Leica 28mm lens. I agree about the X100V, it hasn’t been for me, I have a Leica SL which I use with adapted Leica M lenses which is a wonderful experience with great results, but it’s quite big.

Hmm.. speaking as someone with relatively limited funds, I’d say that the difference in price would pay for some nice photography trips. I think the inspiration I gain from travelling to new places and seeing them with fresh eyes does more for the quality of my photographs than the camera, especially in this case where they’re both excellent pieces of kit.

Hey Tobi! Your comment is spot on. Having owned both cameras that’s basically the only conclusion to come to. At the end of the day the camera should not get in your way of your creative process. I enjoyed the Fuji but I felt limited being stuck to the JPG simulations and as you mentioned if you push the files too far they just start falling apart. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a fun camera and that’s what photography should be all about. If you can afford it I would keep both. They are both great in their own way. Still it’s always craft over gear. The camera doesn’t matter so much at the end of the day. Maybe you’re taking a very German approach there…

@andyjones5192
@andyjones5192 2 жыл бұрын
@@kubowich Exactly. JPG’s and film simulations are fine, comparing the RAWs the Fuji just can’t hold a candle to the Leica. Resolution, dynamic range, colours, noise…are way inferior on the Fuji. 🤷‍♂️ As Tobi said, if you are a JPG Shooter you might consider the Fuji, if you are into editing your RAWs go with the Leica. The files are so much more tweakable.
@kubowich
@kubowich 2 жыл бұрын
@@andyjones5192 not just that Leica files are more tweakable…they also require much less work. I personally NEVER do any color grading on my M10 and Q2, while on x100V it’s a must so that you have an image that looks so-so. And yet still those fuji color somehow suck.

A far more interesting comparison would be Fuji X100V - Leica CL with 23mm f2. Both APS-C and same focal length. Leica CL does not have a fixed lens which in my opinion is such a big advantage. I suppose the Q2 like the CL has 'film styles' to chose (i.e. standard, vivid, etc.). I changed the standard one by reducing contrast to low and the JPGs I get out of the CL now are great. Auto white balance is often not the best choice, but set to 'daylight' I never encountered issues. To judge the exposure better, you should not rely on the EVF alone, but use the live histogram.

What I said in the video is what I really think :D. But the TLDW is: Both have their advantages and disadvantages. The Fuji is easier to use in a lot of ways and easier to get good results with. The Leica is however overall a more capable camera with better image quality and more "headroom". It also has the edge in terms of build quality. I enjoy both cameras immensely, but for me personally the Q2 is the way to go and I will most likely sell the V. Hope that helps ;)

Swiping across the rear EVF was the only way to intentionally or accidentally activate video mode. I did firmware 4.0 update, and when you use EVF in extended mode, it disables the swipe on 4.0 firmware. Now hoping the next firmware they allow disabling the touch screen altogether. Both Fuji and Leica are very capable street photography cameras. They’re both quite capable for architecture as well. It’s up to each one of us to master the tool, camera, to see and capture what we are seeing.

Solid review. “Here’s what I see and experienced. This is my view. Now, make up your own mind.” Without anything other than your video here, I’d posit that the difference you’re seeing in IQ between the two cameras has to do, to some degree, with RAW v JPEG. JPEG to me is like eating someone else’s cooking. RAW is where you’re making the meal from scratch. When it comes to my images, I want to determine, from start to finish, the final result and not rely on some tech in a lab coat making those decisions for me. But I’m old and have been doing photography for 50+ years. Lastly, I’d take a bit of issue with your statement that back in the day, photographers didn’t fuss with their negatives much. Many photographers fussed extensively with every single aspect of making a photograph. Camera, lens, film choice, exposure method, processing, printing and presentation were all chosen carefully and offered a great deal of flexibility. Each decision, every choice of material used, and how those materials were used, had an impact on the final product. It was extremely hands on. Other than that, solid job on the comparison. And I agree - the ultimate decision maker has to be the photograph you end up with. All else is manageable.

Both cameras are great. I’ve owned and used an X100T and a Q (not the 2). I compared both in Capture One and the Q was clearly better in my opinion. Mostly I think because of the amazing attached lens. Overall I took better and more photos with the Fuji as the 35mm aspect suited my style better than the wider 28. I ended up selling both. Having seen the colour and detail in the Q images I couldn’t buy an X100V. If Leica offered a Q with 35 I would be first in line. I’m not interested in cropping the Q2 28mm.

I'm considering getting the ghost version of Q2 but can't make up my mind since it is a quite big investment especially for someone who doesn't have that much time to just go out and shoot anymore. On the other hand, X100V is simply nowhere to be found. There was one day when I saw a couple being available on Amazon sold by a small dealer but day 3 they were all sold out again. And that is when it is already priced with not an inconsiderable mark up. This video is very informative but for someone who is very dependent on just how things look and see if the images are of the styles to my taste, is it possible for you to make a video just simply giving comparison between two cameras, by making the same shoot from the same angle, using different cameras? That would be a wonderful addition to the discussion of these technical things.
