@@snapsbyfox I've got one of those too - the CLE version. Absolute gem. Very small and light travel lens. I recently returned from Seoul, taking only the old 12mm screwmount Voitglander, the 40/2 CLE and the 90/2.8 tele-elmarit. All tiny lenses with "good enough" but not state of the art image quality. I found some time for travel portraits, street and urban landscapes. The kit served me well,

I also think the big bulky plastic part of the PD strap makes it very uncomfortable. It's just not a good fit for the camera IMO. I had the same issue with my Q and decided a neck strap was far more useful. I just wrap it around my wrist I'm I'm good.

Hi Roman! I'm really interested in your longterm review. I own a Leica (Leica MP, film model) since a year myself and the biggest difference to any other brand I tested is the feeling shooting with this camera. It really makes me want to go out and take pictures. In my opinion this is definitely one core reason people (yes unfortunatly only those who can afford it...) fall in love with Leica cameras.

I recently switched from my R5 to the Q3 43mm after taping the 28-70 zoom to be fixed at 43mm. Blew my mind how natural the results are and how easy it feels to assess the framing before even lifting the camera to the eye. Over the years I reduced my lens lineup further and further. It feels very freeing to no longer have to make lens and zoom decisions. I also have a GR III (28mm) that I carry in addition for the rare wide shot. Most fun camera I have ever used (more fun than M11 for me, for various reasons) and the results beat anything except some "medium format" bodies I have played with. The lens is outstanding. Downsides exist of course. Don't get this if you rely on tracking and AFC modes, they are *bad*. AFS is just fine and manual focus is the best among the focus-by-wire implementations. The newest Sony, Canon, Nikon bodies are all fantastic tools - so good they have become boring and not fun.

I'm sure it's on the list of todos already, but yeah, get that thing into manual focus asap. Q line is a superb zone focus machine that happens to have autofocus. Once you're zoning with the EVF instead of AF on LCD, then it becomes the beast it's supposed to be. Keep wide zone AF in wait and click back over when shooting at wide apertures. The dual use is unique to only the Q and it's superb.

I recommend you get a grip for it. I also got a thumb grip first, but after getting a Leica grip, I ditched the thumb grip and have no issues using the camera for a long time, especially if you shoot a lot one-handed. Leica's grip didn't add much bulk but made it comfortable to use. I love my Q original. The only thing I don't like about it is auto white balance.

Congratulations on your Leica! I've had my Q2 for almost 3 years and I've never found it difficult or awkward to hold. I have small hands but I've never needed any kind of grip. When I'm not actually shooting I always carry the camera around my neck or shoulder with a strap so maybe that's why. It's a common complaint though.

JJC sells a grip/baseplate that is quite light and makes handling the Q3 43 much easier and more comfortable. I use it with the hot shoe thumb grip, also JJC.

I have the same JJC/thumb-grip combo on my Q2 and it makes handling sooooo much better. Probably the lightest weight option out there, looks good on the camera and adds arca-swiss grooves to the base plate. Another added benefit is that the baseplate keeps the nose-heavy lens from tipping the camera over when set on a table.

Thank you for continuing to post these great little videos Roman. I bought a cheap secondhand Q last week and Leica’s customer service here in Melbourne is fantastic. They’re replacing the lens (dust inside), cleaning the sensor, adding a sensor seal (like in the Q2), freeing up the power on switch, and replacing the EVF…for under a thousand dollars. It’ll be like a whole new camera. 28mm is perfect for my street stuff. My Sony 24-70 was a bit bulky and not ‘fun’ to shoot with. The Q will be a perfect travel camera. Looking forward to seeing more shots from you in 43mm. Congrats on your purchase!

The Q1 is a fantastic camera. And about 150 grams lighter than the Q3 43. Nothing beats that great 28mm Q lens! I am considering to sell my M10-P and lenses, and go for the Q1/Q3 43 combi instead.

I’ve drifted into and out of the Leica universe for years now. I’ve landed on planet Q3. It is now my only camera. Why did I leave Leica universe 4 times before, guilt. I just feel so guilty to have invested such a significant amount of money into a camera. Otherwise I love the Leica product. I’ve had (had being the operative word as I’ve now sold everything else I had) Sony A7 iii A7Riv A7C & CR & lots of G & GM lenses- Pentax (many) - Fuji XT 4 & 5 & lots of Fuji lenses, V100. Sign FP & some wonderful sigma lenses. And here I am, after all that, with a solitary Q3. I’ve even had Leica M8 & 10 & several Leica lenses. The Q3 is wonderful, I like using it more than anything I’ve had. Some of the idiosyncrasies become an accepted part of using it. I just pick it up and go out and take photos and enjoy taking photos and enjoy coming home and looking at the photos. It’s a gem.

Hello Roman, I had the same experience as you this year and after an 8-year cycle with Fuji. I sold my GFX and lenses for an M11 and my XT5 and lenses for a Q3. Fewer lenses in my bag, so a simplified choice and a pleasure to slow down my photo shooting. Wishing you a new enriching experience with your new equipment.

I recently checked out the Q3 43 at a Leica store, and have to say I was very impressed. Never handled a Q before and was expecting sort of a letdown, but it feels excellent. Pickupability is number one reason to buy a camera for me, and it is strong with the Q. As an M10 user myself, I never had any issues with the gripless design. For me it feels ergonomic, and the build in thumb rest is enough for me. Q is more front heavy compared to the M, which just feels dense allover, and maybe this makes it more comfortable to hold than Q.

Really, really like this one (and your channel overall). 👍 Skin in the game immediately ups your credibility. Your walk-and-talk style is extremely engaging, clear, easy to follow. Also love the way you show a) cruising around, hunting the light for best shots; b) run-and-gun composing, firing off a few frames (which we see in original); c) then showing us the final, edited version with your preset or whatever. This is the best approach, I feel, for photographers to show their work. But let me just agree 1000% with your first comment: the feel of this camera is slippery. I remember popping into the high-end Leica shop here in Berlin a couple years ago, asking to hold one of newer models and...realizing immediately that I would never, ever, not in a million lifetimes want to walk around holding this camera. It feels like it's going to fall out of your hands (you mention soap). (P.S. I feel that I can hold my x100v easily - in part, as you mention, because the Fuji doesn't come with a big, heavy lens). I look forward to hearing how this review develops over time. I'm open to having my mind changed. Until then, I'm on Sony and Fuji. I respect the beauty of this metal box, what it can achieve - but if I don't want to hold it, then I won't take it anywhere.

A video that demonstrates that it’s still mostly about the living, breathing entity behind the camera. Some great images, as ever. A couple of observations - the polarisation of views is not unique to Leica. It’s all brands and speaks to the obsessive and partisan nature of many, many photographers. Perhaps it’s heightened by the cost of a red dot. No - it is DEFINITELY heightened by that. I think the single most important aspect of any camera - beyond the ergonomics, trick tech or performance is how one ‘connects’. I bought a Q2 a few years back, to use alongside my Fuji system. I recently bought a Q3 43 and my world is complete. I love the feel, the weight, the ergonomics and the mind-boggling image quality. I’ll forgive my Qs anything at all and I will never look back. That’s me - it won’t be the same for everyone and nor should it be. I hope every photographer finds their camera soulmate, whatever it is, because it’s a bloody good feeling. On a separate note, are you back in London for a bit and do you do any photo walks, classes or meets? That would be ace…….

I have the Q2 with the Leica accessory grip. It makes all the difference in the world for the security of your hold on the camera. Together with the thumb grip, you will find you have a very solid, secure purchase on your Q3 43. These accessories are pricey but they are one time purchases. Their machining is consistent with the incredibly robust build of the camera. Buy once, cry once. Also, a wrist strap is helpful for me - add that to the thumb grip and factory grip and you’re all set. Enjoy your Q and thank you for the high quality if slightly jet lagged video.

Nice video!! I love the cameras (I have the Q2 monochrom and the Q3 43). I totally agree with you for the grip but I found that by using the handgrip the situation is dramatically improved.. I strongly recommend to get one !!

I sold my Q and regretted it ever since. It seems expensive but I bought it used for less than one of my RF zooms. I used mine for tons of projects and it just worked. The Q3 must be super good based on my experience with the Q. It blew my Fuji stuff out of the water.

Great photos. I switched the other way , Q3 28mm to XT5. Lots I liked about the Q3 , will be interesting to see how you get on with the camera in higher burst modes , if I remember correctly above 4 FPS you dont get any AF at all. This isnt so much of an issue with a 28mm but perhaps could be with a 42mm. For the Ergoes , its wear it on a rope strap or cats paw the strap around the wrist. This way the camera strap hangs on the strap from the wrist. The price is what it is , but the downside of it being a fixed lens is that makes insurance difficult vs a ILC where the total price is spilt across lens and body.

I did something similar. I picked up an original Leica Q used recently just to see what the whole Leica thing was about. I'm almost upset to admit how much I have loved it so far. It could just be that I'm coming from my daily driver of a Nikon Z9 and enjoying the more portable form factor, or it could be that I've been in Nikon/Canon/Sony world so long, that it's just refreshing to see a new look. I will say that I'm enjoying the challenge of shooting with the 28mm as I've been trying to develop a better eye for shooting wide lenses, and getting close to my subjects. Either way, I think there may be something to the "Leica Look", but I do think the price is too high to justify in a purely utilitarian argument, but I think the price is fair given the amount of work that goes into the manufacturing of the cameras and lenses. You just kind of have to ask yourself, if the craftsmanship really means anything to you at whatever point you find yourself in your career/hobby with photography. For me. I think it's starting to make at least as much sense as a boutique level guitar to an accomplished musician.

I picked up a M11 three months ago - it's expansive, it's quirky and it doesn't have autofocus. Yes, for some shots it gets in the way, but for the rest it is simply a joy to use and elevates my shooting experience. And that's what keeps me out shooting for longer and I'm returning with better images at the end of the day - which might actually be worth the price tag. Plus I have always been in the "optically perfect" lens-camp, but now that I have tried lenses with optical flaws (or character if you will) I simply can't go back to those overcorrected, boring modern lenses lol. If you are into the whole retro aesthetics the more traditional lens designs will simply put an extra layer on your images.

I like the 43mm focal length as a standard walk about. I find 50mm too long and 35mm doesn’t get me close enough for street. As such I like the 27mm on my Fuji. 43mm is also the diagonal measurement of the 36mm x 24mm frame, so some like to say it’s the ‘true normal’. I’ve had the Pentax 43mm f1.9 on my Pentax full frame for many years so I’ve had a lot of experience with the focal length. If I was to drop a lot of $$$$ on a Leica this one might be it.

I use a camera strap along with the thumb support and I've carried it around for 8 hour days while traveling no problem. I haven't had a camera ever that I could comfortably carry in my hand for any length of time, plus I like the security and functionality of having a strap across my chest and when I need both hands. For me it is the sharpness of the lens and the very clean and simple menu options that keep that my main camera. Looking forward to a follow up video one day to see how this wears or doesn't wear with you.

After spending an insane amount on the camera I had to spend more money on a Leica grip ie in addition to the thumb bracket , makes the handling more balanced, secure and very comfortable. Engineered with precision as you would expect for the price. There are of course third party options, but not as aesthetically pleasing!

You answered the exact street photography questions that can't be answered by the specs and aren't by most other reviews: how does it feel in the hand? How quickly does it boot up? How's the battery life? How snappy is the AF? Pretty much everything I wanted to know. (You didn't show yourself flipping the screen open or closed; I'm always curious how smoothly or tightly/finicky that goes.) In short this was an awesome review!

Thanks Roman for your honest unbiased opinion those handling problems you mention reflect my experience with a M6 I used briefly years ago I'm not a Leica hater if people wish to spend that much money on a camera hooray I don't require that amount of resolution 60mp amongst other cameras I like to use a Fuji xpro 1 with 16mm /23mm/35mm/50mm or even the 18-55 zoom I get to choose 16mp enough resolution great JPEGs it's fun to use good in the hand feels quality built cost peanuts in comparison to your Q3 to be honest I'd be paranoid about scratching a camera of that value I suppose I just don't buy in to the Leica hype but I'm looking forward to your reports on using it and your conclusions

I’ve had both Q2’s for years now. They are my main travel cameras as I rarely want to deal with interchangeable lenses and international packing. I get the grumbling about the price but I’ll also say this. They are built like tanks, that lens is incredibly sharp and I’ve never once regretted the purchases. I also second the suggestion to use the thumb indent rather than an added thumb rest. Once I got used to the weight balance of the camera and the terror of dropping a cars worth of money I’ve never looked back. Looking forward to hearing your longer terms thoughts. I’m often asked if I couldn’t only keep one camera and I know without hesitation it would be my q2m. Hands down.

Not maybe, it is. People treat Leica as if its some combination of Ferrari and Apple when its really just a cynical company. Start listing various products like the smartphone, flash, batteries, sofort, some of the L mount lenses, etc and so forth and its pretty clearly just a series of rebadges which take advantage of people's need for the Leica brand while multiplying by 2 or 3. So its not whether Leica is generally overpriced, its whether some products are not completely cynical enterprises. I would love it if Leica created $8,000 cameras but paid to license the technologies from the various camera companies to create the best most luxurious thing possible, but it is not. Instead they figured out what Chinese lens manufacturers like TTartisan, Laowa, Thypoch and 7artisan figured out, which is a segment of photographers will think something is good if it feels good. Leica just took that and went up the price ladder with it. If a luxury item is a dream, you need to get better dreams.

@@Carthodon I think value is all relative - Ferrari is clearly overpriced if you compare spec for spec vs. a high-end Corvette if you value only performance. If you want style, brand heritage, etc. you have to pay 5x+ for the pleasure. I agree with you that many of their products are just trying to fit their brand into popular niches such as Sofort etc. but everyone has their own perception of value, and for me as an amateur photographer and Leica (M) owner I bought the camera for a few reasons that I don't think I could replicate from any other brand. I will recognize that these don't apply to some of the cameras including the one that is in the topic of the video, so it's just my experience with their most "iconic" line of cameras but in no particular order you have: A) A true digital rangefinder, I love being able to see the composition of my shot in real time, being able to see what's happening around your frame makes it easier to compose shots with moving crowds and similar. I'm just a hobbyist so if I miss a shot or two from manual focus that's OK, and I enjoy the process significantly more than relying on autofocus. B) Build quality - In a world where everything is cheap plastic the heavy, all metal build of the camera & lens is something I love and wish more brands would do. I've tried a lot of different cameras including those such as the ZF, X100VI, XT5, Sony, Nikon etc. and I just didn't feel they were built as a quality product. C) Lens catalog - the M mount has been the same for so long that there is a huge amount of lenses both modern and historic that I can pick up, each give a different user experience and look to the images they render D) Ergonomics - navigating settings and menus on Leicas is so much easier than that of competitor cameras, I don't know why.. but I find Fujifilm for example infuriating to use after putting down my Leica any time I want to change a setting. E) Aesthetics - beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I think they are by far the most stylish looking cameras out there Now, is that worth the premium? For me, yes. For others, who knows but I think just badging Leica as a whole as overpriced is a mistake as they do offer products that aren't replicated elsewhere.

I say that because besides acknowledging, though not really understanding the comparison I made to ferrari you ignored everything else. I'm not talking about whether luxury brands in general are justifiable, the point is whether Leica is really luxury at all or just expensive. The point I made, which you ignored, is how most products with the leica brand are rebadges of mediocre stuff. The only question is whether somehow their cameras and their lenses are an exception or just a part of the trend. Its something others have commented on with other luxury brands like Gucci or Chanel, which as a product objective are as bad or worse than competition. They get away with it because of a customer base that really cannot tell a difference but are very receptive to marketing to the point where they'll invent things that marketing never even said. Its frankly a demented relationship, just like cult followers these people are made to be taken advantage of because they'll get angry at you for suggesting they made a mistake rather than the company which profited off of it. I could also criticize a notion of superior build quality which doesn't include something like weather sealing, but my feeling is you're just going to hide behind intangibles to make any criticism pointless. Ever wonder why Leica will send out its cameras to be reviewed by big reviewers on youtube but never their lenses? Think about it.

You should have a think as to why Leica doesn't send its lenses to major camera reviewers like dpreview, petapixel, cameralabs, richard wong, gerald undone, just their cameras. In fact, finding any reviews at all comparing any Leica lens to any non Leica lens from a known reviewer is pretty difficult. Why is it that the lens reviews which do exist are almost wholly by Leica fan channels and never negative?

Hi Roman! Fair decision to switch the camera brands! I would be interested to hear your experience about software issues on the leica. I heard a lot of complaints in the last time. I can understand that you switched your income gear brand to a more reliable AF brand like Sony. As a hobbyist photographer I stay with my Fuji gear because it is cheap, cover all my needs and I enjoy to handle my light weight vintage style cameras. Excellent mini review, waiting for the big one.., being myself a Fuji (and Olympus) shooter, I did purchase a Q3-28 as well. Why? Because I can, sorry for the haters around.. The only problem for me as “the perfect street camera” is the price in case you loose it or damage it, even if it is build like a tank with very good whether resistance, I often end up bringing lees expensive gear, and it is a shame because the Q’s, all of them are a joy to use. And in the Leica world, almost a bargain. Yes..

Cheers Roman, it’s Sean in Atlanta again. I had the original Q and I got both the thumb rest plus the hand grip and that made all the difference in the world! Trust me when I tell you that small hand grip will not add any weight to it but it will make the difference between enjoying your day holding the camera and getting a hand cramp! I have had a Leica M6, M7 and R9 and do not have a Q. That said, I do lust over one. If I did have a Q, I would get the Really Right Stuff grip. I have one for my Fuji x100 (model 0) and it is great. PS, I had my x100 IR converted and it is great. The 35 mm fixed lens has no IR-hotspots and can be used at all apertures. Nice!

I realized with mine it was a must to have both hand and thumb grip and a neck strap. It’s enjoyable now but not perfect. Even though it’s large I’m debating switching to x2d with 55mm. I’m trying to pretend it’s a mamiya 7 size and that it’s okay for walking about. Thanks for your content!

Hi Roman, I'm very looking forward to the upcoming videos with the Leica. I bought the Leica Q3 (28mm) this year while I was waiting for my X100VI to arrive. I had planned to sell it again once the Fujifilm has arrived. But now, after using it for 10 months now, it was hard for me to let it go. As you experienced, the Leica feels so well made and I like the looks so much more than the pseudo retro look of the X100. Also I always disliked the Fujifilm menu system and I absolutely love the Leica menus. The camera is such a joy to use. But I agree - it is sometimes hard to hold (as is the X100). But I don't think that the camera is made for professionals who use the camera every day for several hours. Also even though I bought my Q3 second hand it still was a stupid lot of money for me and that is why I'm always extremely careful with this camera. But a camera should be used as what it is: a tool for making photos. I would easily just throw the X100 or a GR3 in my bag without thinking about it. But not so with the Leica which is a big negative for me. So again I'm very curious what the camera will do for you. Thank you for your great videos!

Oh, the Nikon Z50mm f1.8. is great value, looks smaller than the lens on the Q3 and is razor sharp. What is the point of the Leica Q3 with a massive fixed lens? It is a status symbol for conspicuous consumption. If you still have the camera in a year's time I'll eat my 50mm F1.8.

Excited to see your perspective of the 43 :) I got the 43 since launch and it has been now almost 2 months for me now. I love this camera, since it's the Q I always wanted with a longer focal length. For streets I find the AF fast enough, but for shooting my kids it's really slow, since the subject tracking acts really wild sometimes. I now prefer to shoot in single point AF to get the shots of my kids. Great video and I really like your approach of reviewing cameras in general :) And you are so right regarding the Leica camps :D. I personally would count myself aside these groups. I was curious about the Leica brand and cameras and lucky enough to have the money to dive into it. Since then I have my opinion about Leica cameras and there is a lot I like, but there is also a lot I dislike about Leica cameras and e.g. how the company handled the past few releases (see M11 + Q3 freezes, SL3 deleting images at launch). Curious how your opinions forms after time using this beautiful, (but still only a) camera.

Ref your initial comments about the pro- and anti-Leica camps: you're right (sadly). I would appear to be an exception. I part exchanged a load of film cameras acquired over the years and ended up with an M10 Monochrom for about 1,500 quid. Otherwise I would never have been able to afford one. My very short review of it is: It is an eminently user-friendly camera, the menus in particular being straightforward. The best accessory you can buy is IMO a wrist strap (sorts any holding/handling difficulties if you have them - I find the ergonomics to be excellent but then again, I ditched the Fuji I owned because it was too small and fiddly for my hands). It's paired with Zeiss M lenses which are essentially as good as Leica lenses and the results are tip top. Is it worth the money? Very few luxury items are IMO and I would say that a fair price for the body would be about three grand. The bottom line is that as a camera it functions wonderfully well. Because Leicas are essentially simple I find there is little else to say. If you can afford one, get one. I don't think that most people would regret it. If you ain't got the money, don't torture yourself fretting over it.

I think your technique of shooting one-handed most of the time is quite unusual for any camera larger than a compact. People with a camera such as this would typically use both hands, and with this camera in particular would probably use the viewfinder much of the time. Even when using the screen I mostly use both hands. Because of that I don't think the lack of a modern style grip would be a problem for most people.

I have a Nikon D7000 and it's a brilliant camera. Without blowing my own trumpet, the results are pretty good for what "I" want to shoot. Paying out a thousand or more wouldn't improve my images in any way, shape or form.

I've owned a Q and a couple of M's in the past. Now I mostly shoot XT5. However my "supreme indulgence" is a used Hasselblad X1Dii with a 45mm lens, + (30 & 90). IMHO the images produced are in a league of their own, big time.

Definitely need that long term review cause right now the only difference between this and other brands is the build quality... which for this price, like Roman said, is the bare minimum expectation. I don't hate Leica and would love to own one to try it out and see what all the fuss is about but that price is impossible to justify. So what I am trying to say is, I don't hate Leica, I hate their prices.

I've had pretty steady GAS for that exact specific model. But your review will definitely hold that in check for a while. I think the build quality and IQ and menus and stuff are amazing. But I guess I'll think a bit longer on spending that much on something that doesn't really feel just right to hold for any amount of time. Strange to consider that's what's on the go with regards to that, eh?
