I’m still happy with my SL and its output. I am able to easily hit focus without any problems except for very fast moving subjects at close range. If I’m shooting running dogs, then I take more photos knowing that I’ll get one that I want with more to choose from. It’s just a matter of practicing good technique. What’s important is not so much how many AF points that the camera has as the quality of the images it produces. I sold two Canon 5DSR’s and a 5D4 and eleven of Canon’s best lenses to get an SL and an SL 24-90 and an SL 90-280. I kept my 55 Zeiss Otus and got a Novoflex adaptor which works flawlessly with manual focus. I have no regrets parting ways with Canon as my hit rate improved, and with the preferred images, there's less to edit. And less to carry. Another point that came up in the video is the question about the Leica SL 16-35. I have since added this lens, and I must say that it is one of my favorites. I always look forward to using it as it is tack sharp, and with its contrast and wider perspective, it makes some crazy good pictures. Try this lens with animals. It’s greater depth and some cropping might give you the results that you want. Should I get the SL2? I’m thinking about it. I wouldn’t mind having the benefit of stabilization or some more resolution. But wait, I also have an S007 and a Q. One other benefit with Leica is that they make their own adaptors including the S to L adaptor which allows the use of S glass on the SL. So in addition to the above mentioned lenses, I can use the following: 24, 45, 70, 100 and 180. The review mentions the quality of the video from the SL2. I am trying to grasp the many aspects of this process and appreciated seeing some footage. I believe a feature of the Lumix glass, omitted in the video, is that they do not focus breathe. @coasttocoastphotoatl

Thanks for the comment. SL is still a workhorse and a fantastic camera. SL2 will give you the IBIS and resolution video you need to play with to get the most out of it. However it seems you have the best of all worlds with medium format in your kit so it may or may not benefit you as much. The 007 is a fantastic camera with high IQ

Beautiful review on the SL2 with a variety of lenses. I’ve been using my SL since 2017 and upgraded to the SL2 in January 2020. I prefer the SL2 over my other Leica cameras or my 1DXii. The handling and tactile feeling of the SL2 is more refined than the M. AF, though not as fast as the competitors is good enough for my needs. If I need to shoot anything faster, I’ll use the 1DXii. Thank you for reviewing and comparing the Sigma & Panasonic lenses against the Leica. Although I don’t hv any Sigma or Panasonic lenses, I’m surprised that the IQ is relatively good. Great video.....

@cfagil4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the review. I don't upgrade my SL to SL2 because I don't need the resolution increase to 46MP. IBIS is nice but not a must. SL2-S may be a better choice. Even better if Leica decides to do a SL2-D (purely for still photos) with no video, no AFC or any type of tracking. It would be fantastic for landscape, portrait or subjects that don't move more than 5 mph. I will definitely buy the SL2-D as long as Leica does not adhere to its "Charge you more for less" policy. I will only use a mirrorless camera to shoot fast action photos like birds in flight if I have not got my Nikon D500 or D4s with me. For dogs running in the park, I may bring my Sony A7III or A9 at a push. You are so diplomatic about what SL2 can't do. You sure you don't sell cars for a living? You will be very good at selling a Porsche 911 to someone who wants to go off-road rally; I can hear you saying "it is useable"; "It can be done"; "just need to work on the technique" or "Great for Social Media especially when they see you doing it". Don't get me wrong, I love my SL and my little sports car.
@TECH360TV4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Some interesting points here :) I don’t see Leica coming out with a D version of the camera. I think they are going to push the use of video more in their cameras for future content creators so I think the D version will be left to the M system. Hahaha I don’t think I could be that good at selling a 911. I’m prob more diplomatic on the SL2 because I see the target audience for this camera. I can’t compare it to a 1DX or A9 or those type of cameras as it’s not designed that way. I have been vocal about the AF on the camera. Can someone get some really good photos out of it regardless? Yes and I’ve seen them do it and I’ve done it, but I would like to see the AF improved and buffer on the SL2.

I love that SL2. You are absolutely correct: when you pick one up, there's nothing else like it. The build/image quality and simplicity. Love it. The only issue I have with it is 3rd party lighting system support. I think the camera is geared for its typical user: street and studio photographers. TTL and HSS just aren't that important. I don't see people using a Leica for event and other types of photographer where those features are handy. I think the only flash system that supports HSS on the Leica is Nissin? I think that's it. If they copied the Panasonic or Canon/Nikon protocols... Damn, I think I'd have to buy one just to impress clients. I think if you're a Leica lover, the SL2 is a damn fine camera especially for the types of photography I stated. But for my needs, the Swiss Army Panasonic S1R is the better choice for lighting system choices mostly. Well done on the video!
@TECH360TV4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ricardo. Agree on lighting, the Achilles heal for this camera with some professionals. I do know of photographers that use other lighting systems with it but for HSS no luck. I’ve asked a number of companies and they all said the same thing, if the numbers were there in terms of cameras in the market with demand they would make it, but in this segment of the market Leica is currently more niche than others. I would say and pro that wants an SL2 as a second body get the S1 or S1R for those lighting needs

The Leica SL2 has also become interesting in terms of price with the lenses from Sigma/Panasonic. The weaknesses of the autofocus are not very important for me, because I rather take pictures of landscapes. But what a NoGo is for me is the fixed screen. I often take pictures in unfavorable positions and that is very annoying. The form should follow the function, which was implemented very well with the Leica's operating concept - right down to the screen.

great review, would have loved to see some more samples of the 16-35 lens as it is the only viable leica option for wide landscapes ;) the sl2 and q2 are cameras that i really want, but can't upgrade to because of one shortcoming i've kinda gotten stuck on. the original q got me into leica because of the amazing and beautiful color of the raw files. i sold off all my sony gear (big sony fan for a long time) to get the SL instead as it shared sensor with the q - and it did not disappoint. however, the q2 almost has as as bad colors as my old sony systems, and even tho the sl2 has fixed that to some extent, the noise is just as prominent as in the original q and sl. it's a bump in resolution and technical specs, but no improvement in low light and worse colors. kinda hoping there'll be a q2-p or sl2-p with the m10r sensor instead, it looks very promising in this regard =)

Unedited RAW files from other companies look like an accident in comparison to what Leica files look like since the M8. In every regard. Sharpness, color, contrast you name it. Granted this is with Leica glass. Nor saying that you can’t get amazing images with any other camera but it just needs work and you can tell that you start on just another level.

@hRs13374 жыл бұрын
hey kaizen, i actually invested in the gfx100 over the sl2 and they both have their strong points and their weaknesses. are you currently invested in the sl system or the gfx system with lenses? i love the images from the gfx100, but i still tend to reach for my original sl when i don't need the extra resolution. lately, it's been nothing but sl for me, even tho the gfx has phase detect autofocus and superior focusing all around. the gfx has made me stop and think before i take images on a whiff - "do i really need this in 103 megapixels?" - and alot of the times i've re-evaluated the subject and deemed it to not be as interesting as i initially thought. i still see this as a strong suit tho, as you're doing the same thing when you're shooting film. "do i really need to spend one of my 36 frames with this subject?". now, i haven't tried shooting with the sl2 yet - but i can still say that working with the raw files of the original sl and the gfx100 is very different. i have to say that the sl files put more of a smile on my face so far, but i have to use the gfx100 more to get to know its strengths better.

This is a very fair and honest assessment and I agree with you. I don’t own either camera unfortunately but have used both extensively. Medium format cameras will slow you down and as a result the images you get will be more keepers than not. The SL2 is a bit different from the SL in terms of IQ. The way how you describe a product is very flattering, I wonder which lens isn't wonderful/amazing/outstanding and one of the best among those you've reviewed, lol 😂😂😂

I have an SL1 and I recentlyI bought an EOS R for better AF. Canon lenses are great but still not at the level of leica. Leica just have such beautiful focus fall off. Everything looks 3D and live like. On some canon lenses, the images are sharp but they just look artificial and the subjects look like they are pasted onto the background.
@TECH360TV4 жыл бұрын
Different rendering. Most lenses are really good these days, it’s just that small difference that makes a big impact.

Great review and comparison, thank you very much for sharing! A comment for the videographer, I hope you don't mind. When you are shooting Bobby face-on, when he talks about a certain lens, and he actually has the lens mounted on the camera he is holding, you zoom too close to show what he is actually holding. We can only see the lens he is describing either in the B-Roll from time to time (usually a very close close-up of the lens lasting a couple of seconds), or when Bobby raises his hands with the camera while he is talking. Now, this may seem minor, but looking at the lens - while Bobby is talking (and not only during B-roll) - in comparison top Bobby's hands and body size is quite important for the viewer to get a better feeling of the size, bulk, looks of the lens. After all, these factors are also important in any buying decision making. Zooming slightly (very slightly) out, during these shots, will not ruin the one-to-one feeling of Bobby talking directly to the viewers (which is great), but will also allow including the camera/lens into the frame. Usually in these cases there is also enough empty space above Bobby's head to be able to do that, just by recomposing (lowering the camera slightly) if you don't really want to zoom-out. By doing both (slightly zooming-out plus a slight recompose), nobody will notice the difference, and the camera/lens Bobby is holding will be fully visible in the frame. And another comment, regarding the final cut of the video: when you are showing us sample images, please leave them for a few more seconds on screen, we need to pause the video all the time to look at the image and also read the metadata shown. Just a few more seconds would greatly improve the experience. Many thanks again to all the team!

It’s funny to see reviewers crucified the Panasonic s1r autofocus and they show more forgiveness for the Leica sl2 , just because it’s luxury brand . Both of them suck . I have tried the Leica lens on my Panasonic s1r , i got the same type of image as I was using the Leica . If You can’t afford the sl2 , buy a s1r used and invest your money in some good lenses .
@TECH360TV4 жыл бұрын
Actually the AF on the S1R is slightly better currently. I’ll be talking about this more in my long term S1R review. Currently this year has been challenging for many companies so I’m hoping Leica comes out with a big update to improve it.
@TECH360TV4 жыл бұрын
Very true. I’ve heard the new S5’s AF system is much better and it will come to the S1R as an update. Hopefully Leica adopts this as well.

Sorry to be a bore, but this isn’t to do with the camera, rather your review of it. I’m not sure why you’re including photos that you’re having to make excuses for. Number 1, you take beautiful pictures. The photos of the lion that you said “wasn’t tack” and the little boy whose glasses were more in focus than the eyes were both lovely photos and no one would split hairs the way you are doing. Number 2 This is a camera/lens system worth tens of thousands of dollars. For you to dismiss certain aspects of the results as “good enough for social media” is tantamount to saying don’t buy it! An iPhone is good enough for social media. Cartier-Bresson used a Leica and a reviewer of his work said that if God had a camera, these are the photos He’d take! In other words, good enough for the celestial realms and doubtlessly full of love for his subjects. I have picked up a film Leica in a store, and I’m sold. It makes the canon DSLR bodies I have look like a club boot. Be grateful you’ve had the chance to use such fantastic gear. Don’t be over critical of your work. It’s fab. From the little I’ve seen.

Thanks for taking the time to write this out. Also humbled by your thoughts about my photos. When I do these reviews and critique images I took I need to think of a variety of viewers watching this. Those that don’t care about sharpness or the subtle details but the overall image and those that will dissect every image pointing out all the flaws etc. When I say good enough for social media I’m referring to the fact majority of photos never make it to print. They stay on phones, Facebook, Instagram etc. So I’m essence it’s okay not to be tact sharp if that’s what your using the photos for. Thank you though for your overall kind words. Much appreciated

I'd really love to see some comparative (e.g., Leica versus Panny body) photos to back up the claims being made about the lens and sensor synergy. This review comes across like a piece of paid-for fluff; maybe it isn't, but without some actual comparison photos . . . -_-

Contacted Leica because when my L-mount Sigma Art lenses are attached to my sl2, you cannot shoot faster than 3 fps when the battery is at 75% or less!! This was Leica's response... "Panasonic and Sigma lenses have different power requirements, and we are working to improve compatibility and will hopefully see improvements after the next firmware update. But right now using Panasonic or Sigma lenses the battery life and camera performance will be different than with Leica L-Mount lenses." L-mount alliance = Nonsensical BS.

My old canon 6d dinamic range better than leica sl2 😂. What a funny technology with higher prices in 2020. Leica is good for styling not for job. Let see sony a7iii technology and better price in 2020. But your video is good and entertaining.
