In this video I will be testing out the brand new Blackstar Debut 15E. The guys at Blackstar very kindly sent me on of the new Blackstar Debut amps to check out.
This is a practise amp for home use. It has two channels, clean and overdrive. The circuit is totally analogue so you get a really nice warm break up. The amp also features Blackstars patented ISF features which allows you to morph between British and American style EQ responses.
In the place of reverb, the amp has a tape echo which sounds great for creating some space around your playing.
You can use the headphone out to practise on headphones for silent practise and connect a music player with the MP3 in to jam along with backing tracks. All of this comes out of a pair of 3 inch drivers.

Hey, thank you! Really glad you enjoyed the video. Considering how simple this amp is and how small it is, it sounds really good. This amp is great for cleans and lower gain stuff, but it doesn't have a ton of gain for things like metal. If you want a lot of gain and even more tonal options from a small amp check out the Blackstar ID Core 20. It is around the same price, but it has extra channels, built in effects and more. I did a video on that towards the start of the year and that's a way more versatile amp. If you want a simple, solid sounding amp, the Debut 15 is awesome. If you want extra options and effects the ID Core 20 can't be beaten I think!

Picked one of these up a couple weeks ago...I wanted something smaller so I won't blow my family's ears out anymore haha. It sounds better than its pricetag...I have an ID Core 100, a real 68 bassman, and a Mustang III...I plug into this one every time now. It's just got that sound your after every time you turn the knobs which by the way are so simple to get great tone out of its insane! Been playing for around 24 years and the practice amps these days are mind blowing. Back in the day you just didn't buy practice amps they were so horrible hahahaha!
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Craig, You're so right! Modern practise amps have come on so much. As you said, practise amps would have been pretty rubbish in the past. I've owned a few shockers myself haha! Blackstar seem to have really nailed it with this little amp. It sounds great, and it's got just enough volume to do what you need it to do. It's super easy to dial in a tone, and I love that it does have an overall vintage style look and sound to it. For me, it works perfectly as a practise amp. I'd love to hear the real 68 Bassman giving it some though! That's one hell of an amp!!

i just bought one, i'm playing it with a sx sst 57. the clean is good, the OD and delay are just as bad as you can spect for the price, nothing horrible tho. i had no issues when using headphones, the volume is totally fine, some people in the comments said it was bad, low or something. in mine, nothing wrong with it. i'll test it with some pedals in the future, i think that in this kind of amp, that is very cheap, the way to have some good efects is geting some good pedals.
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey man, thanks for the comment. I think you've nailed it there! One problem I see is that people buy an amp like this, which is super affordable, and then complain that it doesn't sound like a huge, expensive, pro amp... of course it doesn't... but considering how small it is, it sounds pretty good. It's a great tone for practising at home.

Well i just bought one thanks to your video. Great demo. My orange crush 20 was just too loud for my apartment. It looks and sounds great. I was really surprised by the delay versatility. It's great as a pedal platform, usually how i use any amp. My only complaint is that the headphones out has a really low output unlike any amp that i've owned. But it's not why i bought it so that's not a problem
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for checking the video out and thanks for getting in touch! Yeah, I've heard the headphone volume is low, this seems to be a common complaint with this particular amp. I do believe the Blackstar guys are aware of this and hopefully it'll be something that is changed on future versions of the amp but as you said, if you don't use it much for headphones it's all good! It sounds great for such a small amp!
@Mr.D34
@Mr.D34 3 жыл бұрын
@@LeighFugeGuitar absolutely it sounds great for its size i think two speakers do make a difference. The price is great too. The name "debut" shouldn't mislead anyone as a crappy beginners amp. Hello. I just got one of these because of the PRICE , the 3" speakers, it's not heavy, and looks cool. I have the Yamaha THR5 for my home practice amp. My main Fender amp is too heavy and expensive to take-out just to mess around. This will be used to go to a friends house to jam and have some fun. If it gets lost or damaged, it is an easy fix. It has not been delivered yet, so no reviews for now. Take care. From Sioux City, Ia.

Yeah absolutely! Their small amps sound great. I wondered that too. A pair of 3 inch speakers is quite unusual, but the amp does project really well. I assume it's probably for that. Especially if you do plug an MP3 player in to use backing tracks, the twin speakers give a very wide sound.

@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 2 жыл бұрын
Hey David, Thank you so much for checking out the video and leaving a comment! Glad to hear you've started playing again, that's really good news! Both are great amps, the Debut 15 is a good solid amp if you want a few simple core tones. The Fender Champion is great if you need a few extras thrown in. Another good contender in the same price point is the Blackstar ID Core amps, they are pretty similar to the Debut but they have a few additional gain voices and some effects too. The Debut is pretty easy to dial in some simple tones. I guess it's all down to what styles of music you play too.

Hey, thanks for checking out the video. It can handle pedals pretty well, I used it on some live streams on Blackstars Instagram about a year ago with pedals and it sounded great. You can't connect this to your computer, but if you check out the Blackstar ID Core amps, they have that option! I shot a demo on the ID Core earlier this year (It's on my channel somewhere!), they are even more versatile.

Hi Leigh, I've got a very noob question and I hope that's alright with you. I have a collection of pedals - overdrive, distortion, delay, reverb, flanger - and I'd like to know, is this the type of amp to use in a small, bedroom setting? I'm not looking for a serious and expensive amp for the room, a simple, entry level type is more than enough. Will this amp be pedals friendly? (Not sure (if there is such a thing!)
@LeighFugeGuitar

Hey! Thanks for the comment. There’s no such thing as a bad question when it comes to guitar. The Debut is definitely a bedroom amp. It’s pretty small and only has a pair of 3 inch speakers so it wouldn’t really project for gigs. It does handle pedals very well. It’s great to throw a few pedals in front of it. There are always some tonal limitations with small speakers. It won’t sound the same as an amp with a 12 inch speaker for instance. For such a small amp it does have a surprising amount of low end. It’s definitely geared towards entry level, but it’s one of the best sounding practise amps I’ve ever heard. I’d probably use it for some stuff in the studio if I wanted some of the tones it can do. It’s versatile and it sounds great... plus it’s so so cheap to buy!

I am thinking of buying this Amplifier Blackstar Debut 15, to use with a Mini II Beat Buddy Drum Pedal as a stand alone Amplifier, or as another Amplifier to use with my Guitars. I only own Tube Type Amps. Vintage Fender Champ, Marshall DSL40-CST and a Blackstar HT-1R. I do not have a Real Solid State Large Sized Amplifier. Hey Lane, Thank you for checking it out! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the video, I appreciate you taking the time to comment! The HT-1R is such a great little amp. It's pretty powerful for the size! The Debut 15 is a killer amp. Blackstar recently launched another small amp which is jam packed with features called the ID Core V3, I posted a demo of it on my channel about 2 weeks ago. If you need a small amp with a lot of features that's a great one and it's only slightly more expensive than the Debut 15. The Debut 15 is great if you need a good, solid core sound.

There are 3 Solid State Amplifiers that I am considering: Vox Pathfinder 10. Blackstar Debut 10 2x3" 10-watt Combo Amp with FX, or, the Blackstar Debut 15 2x3" 15-watt Combo Amp with FX. I already own a Blackstar HT-1R. Bought in 2015 New from Sam Ash. I also own a Marshall DSL-40 CST, that I bought from Sweetwater in September 2014. @LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Stefano, Thanks for the comment. Personally, I'd probably go with the Blackstar Debut 15. The Pathfinder 10 sounds great too, and it does have that classic Vox vibe, but the Blackstar is very versatile. The ISF allows you to dial between American and British style tones, so with the ISF in the British side and some playing with the EQ, I think you could get close to a Vox vibe. The built in delay also makes it a winner for me. The Vox doesn't have any reverb or delay, and for me I have to have some sort of reverb or echo on an amp! So, Blackstar all the way in my opinion! If you can, you should try them both out!

Got this amp to replace a Fly 3 with extension speaker. Thought the extra tone control (presence) would fatten my sound. Always thought the "British/American" ISF control was a joke.. basically just to my ears a tone, treble/bass control. It doesn't really change the "shape" just cuts the high end. IMO. Weirdly, the Fly 3 delay had a intensity and repeat control. The Debut only has an intensity control... WHY? Finally, the amp has two 3 inch speakers. Maybe my amp is defective but when OD is on the speakers break up (not in a good way) when the vol. is set above 11 or 12 o'clock. The amp looks big enough for a 6" even an 8" speaker which to my mind would handle distortion better. The two 3" makes no sense since we are not talking about a stereo amp here. I also don't get anywhere near the tones on this video and I am using a LP with Pearly Gates pups.. Unfortunately I was so excited I bought it at my local music store, a floor model without box etc. because it was the last one and I couldn't actually try it out in the store because of Covid. Yes I could have returned it within 14 days but I was hoping that a bit of tweaking and getting my rebuild LP would help... Not much. I can get some reasonable blues tones with a Texas Pride pedal but there are much better choices out there.. I like the Fly 3 with ex. cab. just as much even though it looks a bit dinky. So far, I have had no luck in finding a small cheap practice amp that gets close to the sound of a natural tube amp and I have tried most of them, Yamaha, Line-In, Katana, Crate, VOX, anything under $200. But the problem is you have to crank a tube amp to get it to sing which defeats the purpose of a practice amp.
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey, Thanks for sharing your experience with the amp. Presence actually does the opposite to fattening a tone, because it adds additional high end frequencies. The more presence, the brighter the tone. The ISF is essentially a way to move the tone stack to give a different EQ character. American is more mid scooped and British is more mid pushed and warmer. It does cause interaction between all the frequency bands. It's quite a tweakable control, but it's finding the sweet spot for your own ears. I didn't have any idea with break up when I turned my Debut 15 up, but smaller speakers can struggle with certain things, especially lots of gain on low frequencies. Another great amp that's fairly affordable is the new Blackstar ID:Core V3, I shot a video on it a few weeks ago and it's a similar size but it's got a bunch of effects, multiple drive voices and more!

I'm not fully sure what the benefit would be, but the pair of speakers in this amp certainly give it a "wider" sound and it seems to fill the room more efficiently than a single speaker. Personally, the Blackstar is a better sounding amp in my opinion, but it all depends what you want to do with it too. The Blackstar is much lower gain, better suited for classic rock and blues. It wouldn't have enough gain for metal or heavy stuff unless you started putting pedals infront. Also, I really love the look of the Blackstar, so for me, that's the winner! The twin speaker setup adds a little extra depth to the sound too I think. It makes it a little wider sounding. They're both great choices, but the Debut 15 definitely wins it for me! @LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! Thanks for the comment. Thanks for checking the video out. I think the 15 is way more tweakable. While the internals are probably very similar, I think the 15 has more to offer. The control panel of the 10 only has three knobs. Volume, EQ and Delay. It has a switch to turn the OD on, but no gain control (I suspect this is perhaps linked to the volume? Louder = more gain maybe?). The EQ for the Debut 10 also has the ISF built in, so maybe the EQ isn't really tweakable, maybe it just shifts the ISF range from American to British. The 15 on the other hand has way more to offer. You have a gain control so you can dial in whatever sort of gain you want, and you have a dedicated tone control and a dedicated ISF. I prefer that layout because I can use the ISF to set the "voice" of the amp to be American or British, and then use the tone to decide how bright or dark I want it to be. I reckon you could get similar tones out of both, as they're most likely the same circuit, but if you want to tweak, the 15 is the winner. Volume wise, I think the 15 would sound wider and fuller.The 15 has a pair of three inch speakers. I noticed on the Blackstar website that it also says the 10 has a pair of 3 inch speakers, but based on the size that it looks, I'd probably take a guess that it might only have the one. Unless they've packed them in tight. The 15 is a bigger case too, so the speaker spread is a little more. Hope that helps!

I have watched the blackstar LT ECHO 10 demo video before this. compared to the 10E debut, I think it is the same. Like the 10E debut, the LT ECHO 10 also has the same knob i.e. volume, isf and delay. as well as LT ECHO 15 there is gain, volume, equalisation and delay just like the debut 15.

@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Valee, Thanks for your comment. Yeah, in this video the sound you hear is straight from the amp. I've got a microphone infront of the amp and then that's being recorded straight into my PC. Overdrive channels always have a little background noise. What guitar are you using with it? When you're on the overdrive channel of any amp, you should always be sure to keep the guitars volume knob rolled down when you're not playing.

@@LeighFugeGuitar okay, i have the volume on 10 and gain on 5, and It makes this awful background noise both in clean and overdrive channel. I think it's defected but seller Who sold me the amp said i have to keep the gain Always at 3 to avoid the background noise. Is that normal? The gain never has to go to its maximum? Thank you very much for your answer!

@@valeensushjs9875 That seems strange to me... I can run the gain on my one pretty high before the noise starts to creep in. One thing that can cause noise is bad power. Try to plug it into a different outlet in your house - if the problem is still there, then it sounds like there could be another issue. The one I have here has a little noise when the gain is cranked (All amps do), and you can also expect a little noise with the volume on 10... but it shouldn't be overpowering the actual sound of the guitar.

They’re both pretty similar in terms of features. The Fly3 is better for travelling as it’s battery powered, the Debut is better for home use. You could also check out the Blackstar ID Core range, they are similar price wise but have more tone options available and effects

Anyone have a preference between the 10E or 15E?

The biggest difference is the 10E has one speaker and the 15 has two. The 15 is louder, but the overall circuit is pretty much identical.

What will be better between Katana 50 and Debut 15e, if we don’t consider the price difference?
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
It depends what you consider "better". The Katana is a more versatile amp. It has more channels, more EQ, loads of effects and you could probably gig with. The Debut 15 is a small amp that has a clean and drive channel and built in delay. It's way too small to use for gigs. Neither is particularly better, but they both have their place. I think the question is, what will you be needing it for? Home use? Do you need loads of tones in one? Or just one good tone.

@@LeighFugeGuitar I want it for jamming and recording purpose, not so much for gigs. I have seen some reviews of katana and I felt the sound is somewhat harsh and less warm.. Has lots of highs which become brittle at times, especially, with a maple fretboard guitar (I have a Squire deluxe strat).. I have tried the blackstar one and it does not have a good crunch tone. On the other hand, the Katana does not have good cleans. I'm really torn between these two.

What is better for metal: this or blackstar fly?
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
For metal, neither have a high amount of gain, but if you wanted to stick with one of those two, I'd go with the Fly. If you can stretch your budget a tiny bit further, check out the ID Core v3. The 20w version is only a little bit more expensive than the Debut but it has way way more gain available.

Hey Ethan Thanks for the comment man. Blackstar have a huge range of amps. They've got some killer modelling stuff in the lineup. The Silverline series is one of the best modelling amps I've ever heard. They're amazing value for money. The new Debut series is just a back to basics, bare bones practise amp for anyone who wants a great tone without forking out loads of cash. I wish practise amps were this good when I started playing! haha

@@LeighFugeGuitar Perhaps on a scale of 1 to 10, focusing only on voice and responsiveness, with Roland JC tops, and Fender Frontman on the bottom, how do you rate the Debut?
@LeighFugeGuitar
@LeighFugeGuitar 4 жыл бұрын
@@ethanmorss8970 Good question, personally I haven't tried the Roland JC, but it almost seems unfair to put a small practise amp up against the JC in a shootout. It's certainly light years ahead of the old Frontman amps though. I actually think the Debut, for me personally, is one of the best practise amps I've ever heard. What really surprised me was how easy it is to make it sound good. With practise amps, they always sound like practise amps. To me, the Debut sounds more like a real amp if you get what I mean. The ISF and the echo really help that. It doesn't have that dry, fuzzy sound that a lot of little amps do. The pair of three inch speakers do put out a surprising amount of low end when you're using them and also it takes pedals really well too. If you have Blackstar on Facebook, 2 weeks ago (On Tuesday 4th) I did a live stream on their Facebook page (Which should be on their wall somewhere) where I spoke about the Debut and did a bunch of tones. I showed how it sounded with pedals on that too. To me. it's main competition are other practise amps like the Katana Mini or the Marshall MG series. It easily holds its own against anything. The ISF feature alone makes it a winner for me. I love the range of tones it can do.
