@@SkippytWalrus Well, that's true, and it's a big theme of the game. But you get to see him first-hand. He's in fact actually yelling and screaming and threatening violence (and from what I hear, that kind of behaviour goes over even less well in Japan than it does in US/Canada). But for most of the game, Kanji's got this pretty innocent look on his face like, "Hi Senpais, what's going on, whatcha talking about? I don't get it"

I'm so glad you immediately understood the shadows not being at all objective reflections of people, especially with Kanji. They are based on their original's fears of judgement for parts of themselves they think they have to hide, and Kanji is very much not a particularly aware person for manners regarding mature interpretations of concepts like masculinity or sexuality. His shadow lays it on pretty thick that this is a teenage boy who on some level has bought into cultural stereotypes of gay=feminine and doesn't know what that means as someone with experience in traditionally feminine perceived traits like sewing and a preference for "cute" aesthetics. I get really tired of people trying to boil down Kanji's entire character to being "he's gay" and totally ignoring the entire person the game has built around him, as if his sexuality is literally his ONLY trait. It feels super dismissive of a complex character who isn't really sure *where* he is in regards to a lot of things but becomes comfortable with approaching his thoughts and determining those exact answers on his own. I'm really happy to see you approach it positively while pointing out some not so well done parts of the game around it.
@LangostaV768 ай бұрын
Yes, I think people trying to boil down a complex character to "he's gay" are missing the mark, too. It was a breath of fresh air to see someone who took the time to form their own interpretation after understanding that Shadows are not an exact representation of the person themself.

@JAnne_Bonne5 ай бұрын
I think people tend to incorrectly equate believing it’s a (possible) _part_ to thinking it’s the _only_ part. And that’s an issue. There _are_ fans who understand the nuances of his character, but also think he _might_ be gay or bi (and that that’s ok) since he goes through an arc similar to other people that they can relate to (read: overcompensating due to fear of others’ opinions of their own interests and/or quirks). I won’t deny there are people who act as though it’s his only trait, but there are a lot who don’t and I don’t think they should be ignored. (And tbh, a lot of the trouble with why the people who do treat it as his only trait, or even that the possibility is there, can be traced to that goddamn camping trip…)

For being a phenomenally awful teacher, having a few easily overlooked scenes with Marooka makes him much more interesting as a reoccurring side character. Student was just killed, so he makes sure to escort a student home, even if he's complaining about the student being out at all and the student actively doesn't want him there. Everyone is scared to ask him for career counseling, but you can talk to a nameless student later in the game that admits once he built up the guts to ask, Marooka actually gave him genuinely helpful advice, he just has to be actually asked for it. Still the type of guy to put on a dartboard, but I appreciate the little steps to give him added character to show the 1% decent person wrapped in 99% jackass.

I really love the P4 Shadows Self concept. Based in Jungian Psychology, the Shadow is everything we bury beneath the surface, while the Persona is the self that we project to others. In his practice and philosophy the fully actualized self was the one who could embody both of these aspects and in doing so remedy the contradictions between them. So the thing about the Shadows is that they are not lying or tricking you. When they say they are you, they mean it. They are just embodying all of the aspects of yourself that you hide from everyone, including yourself. Persona 4 shows the journey of them have to accept that both of these pieces are true and then we get to watch them actualize themselves through their Social Links. Ah the writing and characterizations of this game is so GOOOOD!

I feel like a bunch of people misunderstand what the shadows are in persona 4, the shadows are a mix between a insecurity of said character and what the public perceived them. Kanji’s whole thing is that he is very clearly struggling with his sexuality due to people shaming him for linking “girly” things, to kanji he sees it as “oh since I like girly stuff then I must me gay” so his shadow is this very ultra stereotypical gay character. I can see why I can be interpret as comic relief but I think the “comical” aspect of it in in purpose due to it’s over exaggerated nature, it’s very in your face and not subtle at all.

Growing up in a small town myself, I resonated a lot with Kanji's struggles. In small towns, It doesn't matter if you're queer or not. Once someone notices you doing or liking something that isn't typical of your gender, gossip spreads fast and ostracization happens even faster. It's a subject I don't see a lot of media tackle, and the fact a game released in 2008 managed to capture it so accurately is unreal.

1:23:58 one reason I think Yu is such a good brother is because he probably knows what Nanako is going through. It’s stated early on that Yu’s parents work abroad, and that’s why he has to spend the year in Inaba. But like, that’s a WHOLE YEAR without seeing his parents. It makes me wonder what Yu’s day-to-day life with his parents really was like. While technically this’s just a headcanon, I wouldn’t be surprised if Yu’s parents were abroad often, or just absent from the house. Therefore, It kinda feels like Yu relates to Nanako, and doesn’t her to feel alone.

it always kinda disappointed me how the thing people hate on Teddie for the most is also the thing that's the entire crux of his character. But because of his naive nature, he doesn't understand that the people he looks up to as role models are, in reality, a bunch of hormonal teenagers. I cant believe how many times I had to say to myself, "that'll age well". Also, the homosexual themes and dialogue is a necessary thing to discuss in in this game, it plays a good part in the background lore of the characters. Also, Shadows of the people in this game are exaggerated truths of the people they are from; to deny it is a form of rejecting the self and it makes its own being and when they accept the Shadow it starts their journey to being a more realized self.

I'm sure people in the chat probably brought it up, but the worst thing this game ever did was remove the Yosuke romance route. Yes, romance. Yosuke is absolutely homophobic a lot in this game, and it sucks to see such a cool character fall into this stereotyping. But the knowledge that Yosuke is gay/bisexual turns his actions around COMPLETLY. Instead of being a homophobe because of being ignorant, he is so, SO deep in the closet that being reminded of gay in ANY WAY makes him deeply uncomfortable. There are so many hints towards him developing attraction to the MC in the game, some of which you even pointed out when they occured, but it goes nowhere. All this gay panic is unresolved, and we are only left with a nasty side to Yosuke that is never addressed. Thankfully, we all know the truth. ChadxYosuke forever, the true OTP. If your curious the dialouge for the romance is all still in the game, and as such some legends have made mods for the PC version to re-impliment it.
