March 11, 2019 | Rodney Carmichael -- Remember that scene in The Color Purple when Shug Avery was somewhere between the juke joint and her daddy's church, singing at the top of her lungs, and the Saturday night sinners got all mixed in with the Sunday morning saints, and it was hard to tell if they were praising the high heavens or raising holy hell?
That's what Leikeli47's Tiny Desk felt like in the flesh.
She came masked up, as always, the better to catch a glimpse of her soul. And there was so much soul to bare. Backed by a four-piece band of bruhs dressed as uniformed TSA agents (introduced as "the TSA Band, taking flight with me"), Leikeli47 and her working-class crew proceeded to transform Bob Boilen's Tiny Desk into something akin to a pulpit or a mid-century parlor room. Portier sat hunched over the upright piano, while Justus West plucked guitar strings, Simba Scott tapped out bass lines and Timmy Manson Jr. kept everything in sync on drums.
They traversed the entirety of black music, translating her hip-hop and afro-electro empowerment anthems to live instruments by jazzing up songs like "Attitude," from her 2017 Wash & Set major-label debut, and laying down the vamps on "Girl Blunt" from her 2018 LP Acrylic. It wasn't genre-bending as much as it was a musical remembering of the blues that brought her here - from the hoods of Brooklyn to down-south Virginia and everywhere else she's called home.
In an era when women are no longer the anomaly but rap's new standard bearers, Leikeli47 deserves all the praise for pushing the genre forward with both feet steeped firmly in tradition.
Set List
"Attitude"
"Droppin'"
"Ciaa"
"Let's Go Get Stoned (Portier's Vibe)"
"Girl Blunt"
"Money"
Musicians
Leikeli47: lead vocals; Timmy Manson Jr: drums; Justus West: guitar; Simba Scott: bass; Portier: piano, vocals

Imagine Leikeli47, Anderson Paak, PJ morton, Lizzo, Tank and the Bangas, Yebba, H.E.R, The Hamiltones, Jorja Smith, Vulpeck, Snarky Puppy, Lala Hathaway, India. Arie, Erykah Baduh, Lenny Kravitz and Daniel Ceasar etc were in a music festival, honey, I’ll be gooped.

The genuine perspective of her lyricism mirrored by the talent of her backing band is something on a whole new level. If she keeps them around and collaborates to have more tracks like these renditions she will be a force to be reckoned with. This performance was a glimpse of what the future of music can be, she can lead the way and I really hope she does. Everything about her is very well thought out and just on another level, I Stan.

Got disapointed with her studio material, cause it is all that typical rap thing production. But this, jazzy with this band, is pure rhytmin blues, like both traditional and innovative. Can´t get this Tiny Desk tracks on Spotify it seems

@sapphirejones7302
@sapphirejones7302 5 жыл бұрын
@@thesmellycatjazz acoustic is the wrong word but you get what I mean😂... It's a showcase for "you" to show of vocally, musicality: I've never seen anyone play the song exactly as the radio. Everyone has explored with a live setting and no one has used a dj. Granted, I haven't seen all.
@thesmellycatjazz
@thesmellycatjazz 5 жыл бұрын
@@sapphirejones7302 it depends on the artist. Anderson.Paak, Tom Misch, and several others have very similar energy of their studio and live performances. It's one thing to have a more complex arrangement for a live setting. It's another to completely abandon the original feel. T Pain is a perfect example of this. His Tiny Desk was nothing like his original work, and it was shocking. Now flip the script and you got this. I absolutely love this version of artist. When I look up her albums, it's no where close to being as good. And that's a bummer
