There was a movie about this and Charlton Heston played Leiningen. High drama in the Amazon!

And ironically the guy who plays Leiningen here is the commissioner in that movie.

Has the feel of a boys' adventure story - very much of its time. Strange story with some unbelievable content (ants that stand challengingly still and make eye contact with humans?) Ants do have collective intelligence, but not individual intelligence. It was disconcerting that they didn't pronounce Leiningen correctly, especially with the highly literary Conrad playing the main role. It's the first time I've heard his real-life voice rather than his literary voice, so that was a bonus.

I remember my dad telling me about a story where an injured man couldn't get out of his bunk. He saw one ant but was intelligent enough to know he had to kill it because it was the scout ant and would have drawn in all the others. So what he did was take his boot off and took careful aim.... Dead ant.
