The zero requiem was setup in season 1 episode 5) in the parallel conversation between Suzaku and Lelouch. I don't believe that he'd nearly planned it out to the extent that we see in the final episode, however, it's certainly there: In episode 5, at 17 minutes in, he says this: "It's simple, when somebody wins, the fighting will end." He proceeds to knock over the black king with the white knight; Positions that Zero already holds, and that Suzaku will hold later in the series, respectively. I believe that his initial goal with Zero was to kill the emperor, and set up a new ruler, Perhaps Euphie, perhaps another Royal, and then make Zero out to be a tyrant using Geass, sparing those he holds dear, and making Suzaku out to be the hero. I also believe that he'd place someone else in the costume, and quietly retire with Nunnally, having created a gentler world, but in all honesty, I think he'd be too proud not to take the fall himself, at the end of all things.
@ProfessorViral3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I realized afterwords I should have worded what I meant better. When I mentioned the Zero Requiem I specifically meant the final incarnation of it, where he has Suzaku kill him, after he's become the symbol of oppression and evil. I see now how I said it here could insuitate any part of the plan, which is my mistake
@MothFable5 ай бұрын
My interpretation of the plan was always that he wanted to remove Britannia then create an antagonist to unite everyone against, and then have zero deal the killing blow to the tyrant, thus restoring the people’s faith in zero as a hero of the people and allowing him to leave lelouch and become something anyone could be.
@KatoBeyond3 жыл бұрын
Good video. I do disagree about the Zero Requiem though! Zero's actions as the CEO of the Black Knights suggest that he was setting the stage for a peaceful world at the end of everything. The particular moment that comes to mind is just before the first FLEIJA massacre: the UFN abolishes the militaries of all member nations and adds their strength to the Black Knights. A version of Lelouch's Zero Requiem plan was probably always in the back of his mind, but maybe he wasn't always the martyr he had planned. Once Nunnally is dead though, Lelouch can abandon his own life without remorse.

Lelouch was a genius, but he was also still a teenager, trying to lead a large scale rebellion, while coming to terms with the fact that his actions can have unintended consequences and hurt or even kill some people he cares about. He's not perfect, he makes mistakes, and yes he needed his Geass to win, but if he wasn't a genius he never would have managed to do so. Ok so here's some thoughts: 1) C.C didn't have an extra Zero costume, Lelouch never took it with him. - 2)Erasing Shirley's memories was probably not the best option but there're a few things to take into consideration. First, they were not that close in reality, sure she had a crush on him but it's not like they were hanging out all the time and until she had the courage to invite him, I really doubt they had talked that much. Second, at this point in the story Lelouch is not going to school as much as before, in one of the following episodes Rivalz says "we don't see you anymore" (or something like that) and Lelouch is clearly planning on leaving when he thinks about Suzaku becoming the knight of Nunally. Third, obviously, it's much safer for her if she just forget about Lelouch and it's probably what he's thinking at that point (kind of obvious with what C.C told him earlier). - 3)(haven't watched those episodes in a while but) I'm pretty sure Lelouch did not have a lot of time to plan a battle with Xingke in China and this is very unfair tbh, there's no way Lelouch could have known all those details in such conditions. Also it's not like he knew that Xingke would be after him and using a new crazy mech. I would say the biggest plothole here is Lelouch not trying to get more infos on Xingke himself (and you could say the same about Jeremiah) but this would be crazy to think he could spend all his time looking into every enemy officers and locations before each battle... I mean this would be the job of Diethard but in this case he was busy with the rest of the coup in China so it's understandable. -- 4) "He could have crushed everyone if.." I'm not so sure about that man. you forget about V.V and his army of assassins, you forget about Charles knowing about the geass etc etc... Also, this would require Lelouch to geass everyone basically.. which is not what he wants for the world.. same reason why he doesn't want to geass Suzaku. Btw people always forget that Lelouch only knew Suzaku was in the Lancelot for just 1 episode before geassing him... As far as he was concerned Suzaku was just a mechanic working for Britannia and using his geass to make him join the BKs would make no sense and would be a very shitty move on his part. Trying to recruit Suzaku (the pilot) at least once was not bad writing and it makes sense that Lelouch would try after learning the truth about Suzaku's father. -- 5) there's bad writting tho.. the whole Marianne backstory makes 0 sense, the teleportation on the island is just lazy, Charles's plan is really not great either and yeah the first part of R2 is really stupid.
@Rand0mPeon3 жыл бұрын
They weren’t teleported on the island, though. They were blasted in the water and drifted on a nearby island’s beach while they were unconscious.

Lelouch has many goals, 1) to find his mother's killer, 2) make a better world for Nunally, 3) destroy Britannia and revenge on his father. when slowly all his goals was meet with complicated answer such as his mother was alive, his parents hid so many things and really didn't care about the present world they live in, Nunally died (but soon reveal alive once it was too late since Zero requiem was activated), the black knights turn traitors, many people he cares died; he was left no other choice but to do the next best thing and that is to have peace in the world. How? make him the common enemy, unit other peoples' differences to remove the enemy. I think Lelouch goal never change just modified from 'make a better world for nunnally' to 'make a better world for everyone.' Lelouch is intelligent, but there are times when emotions gets in the way in his bloody path which makes him seem stupid, but no because he is human with emotions is what makes him sympathetic to his circumstances. Just think, if you were in his shoes would you be able to do all the intelligent plans of lelouch without feeling guilt or horrible in just killing your siblings or people.

The Zero Requiem is planned at the end of Turn 20. In retrospect, Suzaku talks about having come up with the Zero Requiem then and there with him and C.C. present as a solution that him and Lelouch could agree on. He needed Suzaku's cooperation because he needed someone who he knew had the conviction to become a true 'knight of justice' to be the sucessor to Zero. There were candidates to pass the torch on to that could have brought the world into a new age without Suzaku on his side. It's also flat-out impossible it was thought of before the Chinese Federation arc, since Lelouch asks Kallen to come back to Ashford 'with him' after they win; something he would have never said to one of his friends if he had known he was going to die one way or the other by the end of it. He also clearly didn't think of it before "Betrayal," since he would have been able to bring it up and negotiate, demonstrating that is willing to die, but pleading for them to let him live a little longer because of his conviction to his mission, or at least attempt to frame his execution in a way that could forge a public image framing the Black Knights as heros with the hope that they could defeat Schnitzel and have unified the world by destroying the symbols of hate. Turn 20 is also an obvious turning point as it marks the start of C.C.'s melancohly, where for the final 5 Turns she's clearly distraught about the idea that Lelouch is going to have to die, looking away from him at points when he makes critical moves (like becoming emporer or lying to Nunally) that bring him closer to his win condition, due to her mixed feelings about the Zero Requiem.

The Zero Requiem: After being outed from the black knights when Schneizel reveals his identity and geass, Lelouch makes the decision to trap himself in C's world with his father and effectively remove them both from the world. When Suzaku and C.C. show up and he "kills god" they return to the mortal world with the Zero Requiem in motion, which is why his next entrance begins with him assuming the throne and focusing all the worlds hatred on himself. Also his first acts as emporer had to do with abolishing the nobility and suzerainship of all the areas so that they would already be independent when he does die.

Code Geass is a lot more than 'one good character'; essentially every character of at least medium relevancy has enough depth to be the the protagonist of their own series if you look hard enough. Much of it is delivered through subtle details, as Code Geass' episodes are notoriously dense and ambitious in individual scope, but if you take the time and, for instance, dedicate entire rewatches to paying attention to a specific character or two, you'll find that a very large number of them have genuinely provocative things to say about the human condition and/or the things that drive us to and through war.

@m4lev0lentdem0nknightamv5 Жыл бұрын
I can say with out a Doubt there's no Anime Protagonist Who can face challenges Lelouch did on a daily basis, Not even Johan Iq is a mere factor that tells you how quickly you learn things and how much you see outside the scope of normal people but it doesn't guarantee success. High IQ has to be paired with a lot of other Traits which is necessary to succeed. Some of those traits are Mental Toughness, Stamina and Resilience . This is something everyone fails to realise while Talking about Lelouch . You may have iq 999 but still won't achieve shit in this Ever Shifting Volatile Complex World if you have nothing else to pair it with . If that wasn't the case all the 230k people in this world with Iq > 160 would be World leaders in every conceivable field . L and Light were only playing a game of getting into the other person's mind and trying to influence each other's decision making . This was done with so much Luxury of Time where each would make a move with a time gap of 6-20 weeks . The consequence of their actions were very limited - one of them will find out crucial information about the other and eliminate him although there's so much room to escape before being executed. No other threats whatsoever . Light won't be killed untill found guilty . Lelouch on the Other hand Had to face the Uncertainty of the whole World itself. Everything ranging from a whole Army ready to kill him without anything stopping them ( which is also the most capable Army with high tech weapons) to The Supernatural . While all other anime characters had luxury of time Lelouch had only seconds to tackle Superior challenges like Time Manipulation, Mind Reading, Saving his Army stuck in a foreign terrain , Confidential Information, knowing the structural integrity of a random building to pin point the exact location of pressure points , while ensuring his rebellion won't betray / collapse/ mess things up / his identity won't be leaked etc etc ... Everything in succession with no time. This is not a question about iq . That's too much information bombarded every second on your face , millions of variables, unlimited threats in all directions. He did all those stuff without losing his character . That takes some serious mental strength. The stress on his mind is insane . This is something people don't see . That's not possible for someone like L who's entire strength lies in pre acquired knowledge anything new completely overwhelms him. This can be observed with High iq people who try to learn chess , they will fail more at the start than the average person because the more the variables given the more they would want to experiment ( Experimenting is considered one of the major indicators of intelligence) . Only later their performance exponentially improves compared to regular people ie... After they are familiar with all the variables . It's easier to have an intellectual battle with an intellectual opponent vs intellectual battle with 100s of opponents with varying intelligence . Humans are not machines designed to solve problems , we are designed to get satisfaction by solving problems . We choose the problems based on their difficulty level which is challenging enough to give us satisfaction.

The problem is that he does not perfectly predict Schniezel the way he did Mao. Schneizel had a couple different times to realize that he was not talking to Zero, but he made the mistake that most people do in conversation. He starts preparing his next answer before the recording is finished talking. This blinds him the fact Lelouch does not respond appropriately to various arguments. Essentially he villain monologues himself into trouble.
@MyMediaChops3 жыл бұрын
I like the overall discussions and ideas your brought up but it would have worked better if it was more scripted because there are many aspects that you could have gotten further into. Some of your points on the bad writing weren't accurate but I see where you're coming from. For example, I didn't grasp why Lelouch retreating was bad writing. C.C. explained that they are partners in crime and will protect him until the contract is fulfilled. Also, it wasn't an extra Zero costume it was the same one. Lelouch went into battle with the armor he got earlier. I don't see any contrivance in V.V. transporting Lelouch to Kamine Island. They did this to show his ability and ability we see later on when V.V. talks to Suzaku in the Avalon or when he gets Nunnally. Immortals have supernatural powers. I will agree they don't explain the origin of the power but the act of using the abilities in it itself is not a contrivance. And these abilities are consistent in the story C.C. is shown later messing with other people's minds at the SAZ and I already mentioned how this works with V.V. You're also discussing Geass and Code abilities interchangeably even though they are different things Lelouch erasing Shirley's memory was based on intelligence and emotion. It was many things stupid was not one of them. If he had simply erased her knowledge of the past days or of him being Zero what would happen if she found about his identity? Lelouch couldn't use his Geass again to erase her memories. I have been very critical of how she's handled but to call it bad writing is a bit of a stretch. Especially since she does make a big impact on Lelouch and influences his life. The problem is she doesn't get much development beyond that. Bad writing no a waste of a character yes. I will admit making everyone play along with the game of Shirley forgetting Lelouch wasn't great, Lelouch could have handled that part better. Jeremiah getting a Geass canceller was not a contrivance, Bartley was experimenting on him for most of R1 as the Code-R project. They were trying to replicate C.C. who has shown to have similar abilities. Shirley being in the wrong place at the wrong time is bad timing, not a contrivance. Also, I am not sure if you showed the Mao, Charles, and the casino scenes as more examples of contrivance because those actually do have explanations. Not going to lie the part at 28:52 was extremely frustrating to watch. A simplistic way of looking at the show that many have incorrectly pointed out that I hope you don't have the same viewpoint in your other Code Geass videos. Other than that good video, I am disappointed by some of the ideas mentioned here but regardless I enjoy people's take on the series.

The Zero Requiem was planned right after Charles dies and before they leave C's world. It couldn't have possibly happened before then because when the Black Knights decide to turn on him Lelouch was ready to die right there and wanted to die and was surprised when Rolo saves him and tries to convince him to just let him die... After Rolo dies his new plan become to defeat Charles by going into C's world with him and destroying the way in so they'd be trapped there together forever... If he already planned the Zero Requiem at that point like you claim then how would he accomplish that if he's trapped in C's world? The only thing that makes sense is that they plan it after Charles dies and before leaving C's world because that was the condition for Suzaku to join them... Suzaku wants Lelouch to die for killing the only woman he ever loved and Lelouch wants to make the world better for Nunally so The Zero Requiem allowed them to combine their goals together in order for it to make sense for them to team up after everything they've been through in order to accomplish it...

I`d add on the Battle of Narita. JLF wasn`t on the backfoot in the battle - it was one step before its annihilation. Cornelia knew how decisive the outcome of the battle could be. Encircling entire mountain with most of JLF forces in there, not counting Tohdoh and Four Holy Swords, eliminating it could bring near complete control over the Area for Britannia. Drawing this battle was not a disaster per-se for Cornelia, as she had reinforcements from Homeland and she had other units in the Area, but the losses were too high and the risk of defeat was too great for her liking. Because of how Lelouch timed the avalanche, Cornelia lost about 85% of her forces and all of her reserves aside from Lancelot and Purists. She herself was ambushed and near killed. With the resulting disappearance of JLF`s power, Lelouch got full support from Six Houses of Kyoto, later got himself the elite remnants of JLF. Not to mention, most of the Black Knights never were involved in battles of such scale and were untrained. In the result, aside from replenishable losses, they were battle-forged experienced soldiers that could engage and be victorious in less beneficial conditions. The only reasons this battle wasn`t a complete victory were: A - Cornelia survived and wasn`t captured. B - Shirley lost her father and the collateral damage overall was enormous. C - The way he forced his authority upon the Black Knights could`ve been one of those small straws on the loyalty of core members. For Cornelia herself, this battle was lost, as she really failed to achieve all objectives she set out to get and because of her losses. Remember, she cared for her soldiers, and wasn`t expecting to lose this many in mere moments.

I find it very ironic and kind of funny that Lelouch ends up becoming a Messiah To the Japanese people. Because he's part of the royal family responsible for oppressing them in the first place. And yet he's treated as this Messiah to them. Well, his best friend who is literally the child of Japan's previous prime minister. Is actively demonized by his own people Literally, the only reason I can think of. For the Black Knights, refusing to listen to him. Is because lelouch Is literally outed by his siblings as being part of the royal family. Along with telling them the fact he has Mind control powers. After that point, they just stop listening to him. Even the previously he was basically there Messiah.

In Death Note, we usually know what the characters are working with, so we understand their reasoning. In Code Geass, we understand WAY less of the pieces and logistics at play, so it feels more like the writers just deciding Lelouch is a genius than him viscerally feeling like one. (In my opinion)

I believe that Zero`s Requiem was planned as a spur of the moment, but only after he killed Charles. Lelouch is overly emotional and has no control over it. Because of it, his entire plan after Rolo`s death was only to kill Charles before dying himself, as he thought he had lost, quite literally, everything. Suzaku did level his sword against him the moment Ragnarok failed, so probably the entire Zero Requiem was really simply an apology for Euphemia and paying the price for everything he did. Though this sounds basic, I don`t really see a way overly-emotional, uncontrolled Lelouch planned out everything, even Suzaku trying to kill Charles and afterwards willing enough to really listen. Hell, he didn`t even know whether he was able to kill Charles and whether Marianne was really alive. Most of it dawned upon him in discussion with Charles.

Honestly, I don't believe that it's bad writing. The director, writer, and the rest of the team had to most likely make so many decisions as to what to impliedly "write" in each episode since the audience that this kind of series would capture are most likely smart and getting into details would likely make this series feel slow, dragging, or boring. Think about cramming all those details into 18-19 minutes of run time per episode and for only 25 episodes. The school/personal life aspect of Lelouch is an integral part of the story as it seeks to humanize the characters and it helps create further connection with its audience. Despite all it's attempts at intellectualization and grandeur it also highlights the human needs of that may or may not be apparent to this audience.

Arrogance almost always is the downfall of all talented (specialy inteligent). Because "I'm so incredible/powerful" you let things goes loose and you pay for it. No discipline, no considerations of the enemy's force and own talents: just the good old failure of the arrogant intelligence. And it's very easy to believe your will is unstoppable when most people around show no way of fighting back in any way, but then you open the door to your true nemesis, which you just happen to don't know before, he picks every single one of your flaws at once and you're done (not Lelouch, of course xD).

11:54 I'm not a great fan of Code Geass(I like it more than I like Death note, at least Code Geass has a decent ending) but whilst I don't think Lelouch is all that smart, saying he's just good at planning is a really poor argument isn't it? If it's just planning, then he is smart....some say he first thing to go is the plan but look at battles of ancient history, some battles are won yes by luck but some of the best like the battle of Cannae are an example of....well genius! Hannibal planned his battle, knew how Romans were going to respond and completely crushed them, if that isn't smart, I don't know what is. Napoleon often planned his battles too. Also hate to say it and in defence of Code Geass(Stop me!), most people are stupid and would gladly walk into a trap if ordered to, it's easy to judge something from the outside and go "Oh god what the hell are they doing?!" but bet if most of us were piloting a nightmare in Code Geass....we'd fall for the same tricks because our awareness of our surroundings maybe not up to much. I good way to look at it is, playing a game like COD in multiplayer, I'm terrible at multiplayer because I either over think things leaving me a sitting duck or I run around like a mad rabbit and later I'm like "What the hell happened there?! I should have seen that coming?!" but I didn't. Most people are stupid(Sorry and tbf I'm stupid, I've made laughable mistakes where I'm like oh god what have I done. Also I'm Scottish, not three days ago I was watching the football and was screaming "What the hell Marshall!? Ya dumb fuck!", I'm sure Marshall would be like "Yeah it was a silly mistake and I don't know what I was thinking"). So Lelouch only needs to be the smartest guy in the room and doesn't really need to be the next Light.
