The thing that confuses me most about this whole thing is the fresh footprints that were found as if someone was watching White look for the colony he left behind
@legendarytr1bal4 жыл бұрын
Probably the natives. Maybe a scout was watching, and when a group of men got ashore he took off in fear of being shot.
@jacobgaio12314 жыл бұрын
maybe the natives inhabited it for a while and that would explain the smoke, cause tbh I don't think there would be a natural fire like that that wouldn't spread. That might also explain the CRO like they put one Croatoan then wanted there to be more evidence but were captured in the process, although there was no cross, maybe they were too rushed, but if they were too rushed they would have put a Cross instead of 2 Croatoan signs. We will probably never know. I agree that the colony split up, one went to the mainland then the others went to Croatoan and were successful in surviving at least, but the mainland people were just slaughtered. I just think the footprints were due to Natives living on the island or just hunting or something (fire), and when cannons went off they just bolted out of there real fast. Or as the @Tr1bal said it could have been just a Native Scout, and I mean that's pretty similar anyway.

It's funny, we put so much meaning into anything and everything that's unknown. Do you think if an archaeologist found some trace or evidence from our, or more precisely, your past they'd try to put a meaning to it even if it really wasn't something all that important to you in the first place
@argentum7464 жыл бұрын
"fresh" isnt a precise description anyway. Which is litered through the whole examples of the document from White. In an age where everything just takes so much longer, fresh can mean "30 minutes ago", "a few days ago" up to "only a week old". The fire or smoke also was unprecise in description, could have been anything and no combat indicators were to be found (so its not like the fort was burning down indicating that a fight just had happened when they arrived). Also imagine this, he needs 3 years plus travel time and arrives at the location just to witness the attack of the natives against the fort? Come on. Yeah just in time the natives decided to burn the colonists so the english guys can take note. These footprints mean nothing but mostly because the report of these events are unclear, unprecise/vague and leave a lot of room for interpretation. In short, they arent reliable information for anything. The only clear hint are the carvings.

When I was in High School in Virginia in the 60's, we had a Virginia history textbook, in addition to a world history textbook. IIRC, the Virginia history textbook started its account with the Jamestown colony, first settled in 1607. This was about 20 years after John White first landed on Roanoke Island, which was to became part of North Carolina. While there was mention of the Roanoke Colony in the Virginia textbook, it was footnoted as a failed first attempt to colonize North America. Emphasis was instead placed on Jamestown as the first permanent colony established in the "New World".

I agree with that conclusion. The colony were short on supplies and sought out more inhabitable land. I think the majority of the colony went to Site X, while a small band of men left the engraved Croatoan message. I believe they purposely ravaged the Roanoke colony and left a subtle message in an effort to not bring unwanted attention to the colonies survival from potential future Spanish scouts. The engraved message would be understood by John White and lead him to the ‘small band of men on Croatoan’. They alone held the new secret location of the colony, now known as Site X. If the Spanish scouts found these brave men first on this exposed outer island, then they would’ve died with the secret.

Update: on November 2020 (I too am confused as to why they're still searching during a pandemic, but that's irrelevant), a search attempt resulted in the findings of a trove full of English potteries located 50 miles west of Roanoke Island. A few months prior, another archaeologist claimed to have found similar objects on the Hatteras Island, 50 miles _south_ of Roanoke. I found sources saying that if both findings were acurrate, it would strengthen the theory that the group of colonists had splitted up into two or more survivor camps, some of them assimilating with native tribes just like Lemmino suggested. Which is crazy wtfff

Indeed an Interesting theory, but the only problem is John white didn’t want to leave in the first place, for both professional and personal reasons involving his family. He had to be convinced to go. Why would he want to cover up the whereabouts of the people he originally wanted to stay with? It seems more likely he just wanted to believe that his daughter and granddaughter were still alive, and that he wasn’t unwittingly forced to abandon them to a potentially grim fate. After all, who would want to live with the guilt and grief from assuming the worst? As for the anchor, John white proved before that he was a bit of a pushover when it came to dealing with experienced naval officers during the Chesapeake Bay dilemma. So it seems reasonable to assume that returning to England after the anchor cable snapped was not originally his decision either, but he went along with it just as before.

They were finally released when a blacksmith created a passage by melting the mountain, allowing the gray wolf Asena to lead them out. The people led out of the valley found the Turkic Khaganate, in which the valley functions as its capital. This is a story not only told by Turks but also the Mongols. There is some major parts that we know that are true. Such as the turks being good blacksmiths it was also stated in Chinese records.

The fire and footprints were the most fascinating and overlooked aspects of the mystery. What, or who, caused the fire? Why was there a fire? Who was running away from an abandoned village, and why didn't they return after White's crew made their presence known as peaceful inspectors? If it was the Roanokes, they likely would have attacked as they did the fifteen crewmen. So many questions, so few answers.

It was pretty standard procedure during the colonial era for all empires and kingdoms of the time. A lightly armed expeditionary fleet would be sent to survey an area and establish a colony, and if applicable, reach out to the local natives to understand intent (ie are they hostile or not) and potentially establish trade, as colonists would virtually always be low on supply and force. Over time as the colony would develop, natives would be established as more permanent allies if they were useful to the colony (manpower concerns, as allies against other hostile natives, etc), displaced from their territory (especially if gold and other rare resources were involved) or exterminated if relations were especially bad and colony supervisors deemed the natives to be an especially high threat to the colony. I'm sure you can imagine how silly it would be for the brits and spaniards and whatnot to have a default policy of extermination and immediate hostile stance towards natives considering the astronomical costs involved in even establishing a colony, the enormous risks and massive disadvantage the expeditionary fleet crews had embarking across a big fuck off ocean into an unknown land settled by native populations with hundreds of years of survival experience and knowledge of the surrounding land lol.
