Great video, and nice results. One tip - I found that drilling holes in yoghurt containers often led to cracks. By heating a piece of wire in a gas flame and burning a hole, the edge is formed from the melted plastic, giving it natural reinforcing, and almost never get any cracked containers. I re-use them over and over and over.

Put your cuttings in individual clear cups... then you will be able to see if any is rooting without having to pull them out.
@sporktime52063 жыл бұрын
Clear cups are a fantastic idea to check for root growth, just keep the clear cups out of sunlight or algae will grow and cause problems. Stop algae growing with some aluminum foil and wrap the outside of the container.

that's some great propogation. I've just taken some cuttings from my nectarine tree and grape vines but I was watching another youtube video and rather than bag each individual plant the dude just got a large clear container and shoved all the plants in there to create a mini green house. So I tried it today and bought a 120 litre container, will let you know in a few weeks if any of the cuttings took root.
@@fortuneflux I think the propagation methods for stone fruits are slightly different from citrus. They might require a heating mat or you might be required to take cuttings in the spring. Both peach and cherry are stone fruits.

Hi, Thanks for the video. I am still amazed that you can grow a treat from a cutting! I have 14 cuttings from an amazing Key-lime, at least I think its a Key-lime tree. It has round small fruits that are very aromatic and taste so good in a G&T :-) I have one problem though. I put the cuttings in 4" containers which are set into a tray that has its own plastic cover to keep the moisture in. I do not water very much since it stays so damp in there. It does have air vents which are open. But I have started to see mushrooms growing in the earth and have removed some small areas of mold. Is it not Ok to leave that cover on all the time? I don't want them to rot. I am in Southern California too.
@sporktime52065 жыл бұрын
I keep mine covered until they out grow the bag, doesn't matter if its summer or winter. Mold and mushrooms are a common issue. Just remove them when you see them. I use disposable chopsticks to hold the bag up and keep them from collapsing on the plants, it was a bad move because the wooden chop sticks would get mold and I would have to replace them... finally I use plastic straws and that solved my mold problems. Good luck!

Great question! Plants transpire thru leaves, this is a form of energy loss. As a means to minimize energy loss, and aide in root development, remove all but a couple leaves and trim the remainder. The cuttings will preform photosynthesis, but with less to manage the cuttings can devote more energy into putting out roots. This is a very old botany trick which works for most plants.
@irenearathi23014 жыл бұрын
Also, does this technique apply for other citrus trees- orange, citron, pomello, sweet lime? Have u tried cloning any of those?
@sporktime52064 жыл бұрын
A buddy of mine tried this on his key lime tree, and had similar results. 50% ended up rooting, and he transferred the 3 strongest plants into pots (All he wanted was 3 trees). In theory it should work with any citrus. The method is cheap enough, if you end up giving it a shot please let us know if it works as well as what kind of citrus tree.

Cuttings grow faster I heard
@sporktime52066 жыл бұрын
Start from cuttings if you can. Cuttings will give you an exact copy of the tree, with the same tasting fruit and the same production qualities. Starting from seed is like having children and no child is the same as the parent, every seed will have it own qualities. Growing plants from seeds will have qualities / characteristics you don't want, such as; longer ripening times, less production, off tasting fruit, etc etc. It's really a shot in the dark if you grow from seed. And yes it is faster to grow from cuttings.
@orgasmictomato6 жыл бұрын
Just to point out that other considerations are to be taken into account also.... as the most obvious is that the original tree (parent) may be a grafted tree, so unless you graft the cloned plants onto the same rootstock, then there production will be vastly varied from the parent....the trees will be of the same characteristics, but unless grafted onto similar or same rootstock and planted and grown under similar conditions, then the yields will be different from the parent... just to help... Jim farmer (grower)retired.
@thepincushionman70635 жыл бұрын
Just graft.
@justgivemethetruth5 жыл бұрын
@@orgasmictomato By vastly different, do you mean more or less? I've heard that most of the root stocks are dwarfs trees, so with regular roots they may grow much faster and much larger, but they also might be vulnerable to diseases as well.

Once your cuttings have rooted and have their own pot how often do you water and how much?
@sporktime52066 жыл бұрын
Watering at this stage should be daily. Upgrade to a larger pot once you see roots growing from the bottom. Its been a little over a year now and a few of my plants are outside in 5 gallon containers. If you put your plants in containers the general rule is to water daily. It's summer now and the cuttings I took from this video are huge in fact I've had to prune a few of them. I think I will need to create an update video. Remember take more cuttings than you think you will need. If you take 12 cuttings about half of them will root, from there about half of them will really grow big.

...did you cut the leaf (s) in half for a reason ?...
@sporktime52065 жыл бұрын
As probably know leaves are required for photosynthesis, so it may seem counter to remove all but two and cut them in half, but this is actually required to get the cutting to root and grow. Leaves are responsible for converting carbon dioxide into oxygen as a by product of this the leaves transpire, this is nothing more than a fancy way of saying water loss. To keep the cutting from losing too much water and drying out, you must remove most of the leaves with the remaining leaves cut in half. Even with the leaves cut in half the plant still has the potential to dry out, so you must keep it in a humid environment, hence the plastic bag around the pot. You can think of it as a poor mans green house. Good luck.

There is no guarantee if you are planting from seeds. This is because seeds are the offspring and just like children they are always different from the parent. Growing from seedlings could result in poor traits such as: low yield, off tasting fruit, long ripening times, or even no fruit at all. The only way to make certain you get a lemon tree is to take cuttings from a known source, this method is sometimes called "cloning" which is what I show in the video. Find someone with a lemon tree, taste the fruit to see if you like it, then look at how much fruit the tree is producing, if you find a good tree ask the owner if you can take a few cuttings.
