Your interview with Lemonade reminded me very strongly of a question that I heard asked more than once while I was taking myself to school on VCs and angel investors. The question was, "Given the choice between investing in a startup with a terrific product or one with a terrific management team, which one would you choose?" The answer almost universally given was in favor of the management team. The underlying but unspoken premise was that a talented management team with a less impressive product has a lot better chance of success than a company with a great product and a mediocre management team. This interview was like a clinic on the validity of that view. Thanks for the refresher course. I may soon be an investor or a customer or maybe both. :D

Thanks for what you’re doing Dave. I hope you'll do more on lmnd as I’m interested but have doubts. Another way to look at LMND is that they are a middle man for the ‘real’ insurers - the reinsurers that take on the actual risk of the policies. So isn’t lmnd effectively just an ‘agent’ for those reinsurers? Albeit they have less overheads ie virtually zero physical infrastructure, no commission agents and largely use bots v employees, they also have no float, from which they could underwrite the risk themselves and avoid the cost of reinsurance. When negotiating with reinsurers, id imagine lmnd are more the price taker, than price maker, since lmnd is the more reliant party, they must have the reinsurance in place to operate. So isn’t their actual advantage, being able to sign up customers more cheaply, over legacy co’s, which have higher per client overheads, the cheaper lmnd sign up cost savings, being mitigated by the costs of having to use reinsurance, so maybe it’s approximately a wash in terms of the end policy pricing? ie. there’s no price advantage for lmnd, perhaps even more expensive, in some or many? instances, which would mean they’ll be vulnerable in quote comparisons. Any way of determining if this is so or not? So maybe their major and perhaps only appeal, over existing co’s would be the mobile, easy to deal with interface, which gen x/gen y are used to transacting their business that way and the friendly, ethical face, lmnd portray themselves as. But insurance policies are the actual business product here, not the interface, their way of doing things is obviously superior but it’s hard to see their insurance products themselves as superior V’s the competition, since lmnd doesn’t offer any different insurance coverage features, or significant price savings as far as I can tell, nor am I sure they’re any easier to deal with than legacy co’s, in the 70% of claims that arnt automatically settled by the AI, but don’t know? I’m not sure lmnd could be regarded as dispruptive, as they portray themselves, when they rely so heavily on the established system (reinsurance), the disruption seems to be more about sign up and marketing appeal, digital in the digital age, with those particular cost savings I guess making lmnd overall on par in price in general at the moment? but not compelling, unless/until they build the cash float, to largely do away with the need for reinsurance cost, where they may use those cost savings to offer better features on their policies and be more competitive on either features or price or both, than I suspect they are now, at that point, if they can get there, they'd have the chance to be dispruptive imo.

Fantastic job, Dave. Really excellent questions and conversation. From my perspective, this interview was a two-for. First, it provide tremendous perspective of Lemonade and the DNA that runs through the company. Second, it was a well articulated master class about digital-first thinking and how to build relationships with the digital native generations. Having worked for a global manufacturer that is based in Israel, I can also attest to the value of the portion of the interview that talked about their global capabilities and thinking, relative to incumbents who stop at the water’s edge. Such a robust conversation. Very, very nice job.

Brilliant CEO, he is stating the obvious for anyone who has ever worked in the insurance industry. Agreed. Some more difficult questions for the CEO would be welcomed. Also, if we take the example of the scuba gear, I would like to know how Lemonade can be sure it is really a fraudulent claim. I understand that the claim is suspicious, but if I would be that consumer and that the claim was genuine, I would be extremely frustrated to be denied. How can they be sure not to deny legit claims ?

Daniel Schreiber has mentioned in multiple interviews that he and the company are not concerned with short-term stock prices but instead are focused on long-term business opportunities. If this is true, why is Schreiber selling tens of millions of dollars worth of his stock? He appears to have sold on multiple occasions as the stock price went up, which suggests he IS concerned with the short-term stock price. Hey Dave, do you consider this a red flag? Does it call into question your conviction in the CEO or the company? I know Elon Musk is truly an outlier, but his commitment to Tesla is clearly demonstrated by his compensation package and unwillingness to sell shares in the near term. I believe this builds investor confidence and encourages long-term holding. If Schreiber truly believes he is disrupting a multi-trillion dollar industry, wouldn’t he want to hold onto his shares? Regardless of whether or not this concerns you, maybe a good idea for a video is “Investment Red Flags”. What should your listeners be looking out for? Thanks for posting this kind of content - I very much appreciate it. Critical thinking is undervalued!

24:30 "Disruption causes disruptors" This is the key concept. Incumbents that were able to ride the first tech wave with ubiquitous computing in the 1980's are now saddled with tech platforms that are, as Schreiber explains, albatrosses. Business models that are antiquated. TSLA Z SQ are my best in class disruptors in auto/energy/manufacturing, banking, real estate. I am increasingly becoming convinced that LMND may emerge as best in class for insurance.

The Disappearance of the Middle Man.....that is the thought that came to mind during the section "Disruption causes Disruptors" not the other way around. To your point Dave about the nature of technology concentrating "Where is Everybody" as Daniel coins it. The global reach without feet on the ground - intriguing. No middle man, no one else doing this, and less people working. That seems to be the only risk, the unintended consequences is lost jobs (skylines full of people), so we will need something cheaper. and those efficient companies can deliver. I just bought this stock, as I am focused on solutions. We are all facing a new economy that poses a risk - mass unemployment - and my savings in stocks is my family's insurance. I had to watch this when I had time to really digest it - and I am glad I did. This is an important must watch episode. Thank you Dave and Daniel for your open source approach. PS - Can't wait for Lemonade to come to my area.

Daniel is 100% right. I worked for insurances as a consultant and it was so painfully inefficient how they did anything. They're never able to make such a big change in the next 20 years or more. Bringing together two departments because of acquisition leads to separate software systems until they manage some kind of conversion years later. When I heard of Lemonade I was immediately intrigued by their efficient approach.

Hi Dave, I watched the full series of your take on Lemonade $LMND. I enjoyed the deep insights that Daniel Schreiber had to share. However, I am interested in your opinion about the reinsurance part of the business that really bugs me. Two key concerns:1. What if reinsurers refuse to pay Lemonade for their customer claim or if Lemonade runs out of money to pay claims? 2. How do you think Lemonade can make their reinsurance premiums low enough if they might be perceived as high-risk when there are incumbents around. Also, if possible, can you share the degree of bullishness on the stock currently? Thanks!

Dave this was very deftly executed in both your own research that fueled your questions and the thoughtful answers that were given by the CEO. I hope to hear more from them directly and feel even better about the few shares I have in LMND. I am now faced with having to try and find out why ARK Invest doesn't think this is a company worthy of being in their fund. LMND may just be the TSLA of Insurance as their focus is what makes them so different and their "mechanics" are built around the ethos of what they themselves want as a customer. Their customer facing drive and execution, thoughts, products and delivery are unlike the industry standard on every metric that matters to customers. I am finding it hard to poke holes in not only what they are doing, but HOW. They don't have to get the entire pie, but I am now even more confident they have a path to allow them to take a bigger bite then the incumbents are expecting.

In Daniel's comment about "Either I'm totally not getting this, or I could code this on my Apple Watch while driving home this evening": This is exactly the same sentiment that my business partner and I had when reviewing the software being used by the hotel companies. It was way too bloated and cost millions just to maintain the code base. Solving this problem is where we made our money. I totally agree that legacy companies are largely incapable of throwing out their old ideas and starting over with new software. Sometimes it takes a fresh view, and it sounds like Daniel is on exactly the right track.

Stock keeps going up, around $130 as I comment, but I'm concerned about a significant amount of insider selling, particularly with Daniel Schreiber disposing 536,000 out of 808,200 shares up to Dec 8, 2020 according to SEC filings (assuming my analysis is correct). Is it because he holds more shares in another holding company and just wants to decrease his personal holdings? Or is it because he realizes the stock is overvalued and wants to take profits off the table? The average disposal price was far below $130 per share.
@EdelhartIndustries
@EdelhartIndustries 3 жыл бұрын
This also caught my attention and is my greatest concern as of late. On the SECform4 site i also found those numbers for Schreiber, but on another one i saw that he still had a little under 14M shares. I dont know which one to believe, but if he really only has 350k shares left thats pretty concerning IMO. A positive sign for me is that Wininger “only” sold about 10-15% of his shares. So he is definitely still holding around 14-15M shares and thats a good sign. Lockup expires on the 29th so lets see what happens next week, I hope they Wininger doesnt decide to sell more..that would be a big red flag for me.

Very interesting!! Didn't realize there was so much insider selling either. Daniel's look to be automatic scheduled sell orders but other members are selling directly. I'm also curious to learn if maybe a large portion of Daniel's holdings are only in preferred and options and are therefore not well accounted for here.

Great interview. Really good insight. His point about if you want to optimize what incumbents are doing you will never make it is absolutely true. Thus why Tesla doesn’t have car dealers. If you want to make a better product than what’s already there you have to build something totally different. Thanks again for the interview, it helped reaffirm my conviction as a share holder

After I watched your interview, my first thought is it sounds like a great company. Then I went to Lemonade website to get a homeowner insurance quote to see if the pricing is competitive or not. I provided my current coverage information to them. But I am surprised that their quote is 45% higher than my current State Farm premium. I am very disappointed that their quote is not competitive at all. If their quote is similar to State Farm, I will still switch to Lemonade because of their charity giveback program. I will check again in a few month to see if they improve their pricing on homeowner insurance or not.

I’m very impressed by you both. One big thing that was not discussed is Lemonade’s, unique, fixed-fee model. I believe this may be Lemonade’s paramount differentiator, so perhaps you could discuss that in a follow up interview?

Look at that CEO! Ok. Really appreciate the content Dave! Have you considered RKT - Rocket companies? They are innovating in mortgages. They are similar to Lemonade in that they also attempt to attack a huge, legacy market by growing on a digital substrate. Thanks

Thank you very much. Dave your motto is getting underneath the surface to take a deeper look and having a more critical approach. I appreciate the conversation, but from my perspective the biggest questions about LMND remain unanswered. How does the AI algo. lead to accurate pricing of insurance information, with such a low head count how can they make sure customers speak to a human when they have questions, how will LMND defend themselves from other players who will have more access to more data, how will they decrease their loss ratio of time, how do they navigate the complexities of re-insurance etc etc.........

Great interview. I’m thinking about switching my home insurance (while more expensive with LMND) I like their business ethos. My one concern is my home is my biggest asset. Is Lemonade sufficiently capitalized to pay out claims as a small start up company in the event of a major liability event in the world? I think the big fancy buildings that Daniel mentioned does give some people comfort. Another example Prudential using the rock as their logo. Symbol of strength.

Elon said himself, Tesla won't be the only one to achieve level 5 fsd. So other auto makers will disrupt insurance as well. Maybe Lemonade can get some of that business, but time will tell. Robotaxis definitely should have been brought up though if it wasn't.
