they could stick with a 1.8, but use one from an old golf/jetta. theyre horribly underpowered (hot models were like 110hp), 8 valves, noisy cam, but man you can run those things all day long WOT. hence all the old mk1 rabbits that just wont friggin die. and when they do, those 1.8s are flipping all over the place, and take like 3 minutes to swap.

You know, if you either modify the EGR valve to work better with less pressure or just pull the cylinder deactivation fuse, the 8-6-4 is a pretty solid engine. It’s the last old-school cast-iron pushrod big block Cadillac ever made, and since it’s so low-revving and under-stressed it’ll take one hell of a beating. It’d DOMINATE!!

Of course, there is a drop-in conversion kit to put a VW Diesel engine in an Audi. Guaranteed great MPG from this all German conversion. And best of all, when the Achtung! light comes on in the dash, the other part of the car will perfectly understand the meaning 😁

honestly an ALH 1.9 would really be a great fit there. dime a dozen, easy to drop in (same pattern and clutch as the 1.8T) and only needs 3 wires to go

Tldr; Germans invented rotaries so do a horrible rotary swap. Okay hear me out; One of the rings in the Audi logo is for NSU. NSU made the first ever production wankel rotary powered car ; the NSU spider. So as a homage to the Gods of teutonic engineering they should use a rotary. Either as simple as possible. Such as a carbureted 12a from a first gen rx7, they should be cheapish. Either that, or they can build it to their hearts content. But they must run the over engineered stock twin turbo setup from the FD. As stock as possible.
