Living St. Louis producer Anne-Marie Berger tells the history of the Lemp family-a name well-known for its beer in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After emigrating from Germany to St. Louis, Adam Lemp began brewing lager beer-becoming the first to brew this type of beer in America. After his death in 1862, his son, William Lemp took over the family business and created the first brewery to ship products coast-to-coast using refrigerated railcars. In 1904, William committed suicide in the family's mansion which is now rumored to be haunted. Wiliam Lemp Jr. and William Lemp III also committed suicide in the mansion. In 1945, the Lemp brewery officially closed. But now, Lemp beer is being bottled once again-using a new recipe based on the traditional brew.
