Michael Parkinson has taken over from Michael aspel from 1984 to 1992 after Thames television has lost the licence

Parkinson looked less than enthusiastic about the gig. Bear in mind that he took the job after making himself unwelcome at the BBC, for the time being at least, and losing a lot of money in an investment with TV-am, which didn't provide the returns and overinflated wages forecast. A cushty job, though. I wouldn't be too sad about being paid to do so little work.

I suppose Michael Aspel felt that he needed a change, and at the time Michael Parkinson was flavour of the month.
