One of the MGM greats .. and yet...all she ever got to do at the studio was just sing. Although she is fabulous in Cabin In The Sky, she never got much of a chance to sink her teeth into any major roles. Our loss, but her musical legacy is stupendous and every time she pops up in all her Technicolor glory, you realize what a musical boost she gives to any of the MGM films she appears in. This picture "Broadway Rhythm" is one of the few musicals from MGM that really falls apart. It was supposed to be based on the stage musical "Very Warm For May" but they didn't use any of the songs except "All The Things You Are". They cast Ginny Simms who used to be a vocalist for Kay Kyser. Although she is a fine vocalist...this movie proved what a lack luster performer she was. There is nothing compelling about George Murphy either. I am guessing they realized they needed to spice up the film so there are some wonderful musical performances by Nancy Walker, Gloria DeHaven, Hazel Scott (Personal Favorite) and a few others. There is also a strange acrobatic routine performed by the Ross sisters that can't be explained...LOL!! Lena Horne simply shines through all the nonsense of this film. She just sings and uplifts the proceedings with her absolute beauty and vocal charm. She is a national treasure as are MGM Musicals. Thanks Peter for sharing this wonderful scene. Made my day!!!!

Thank you Peter! This memory was quite a treat. I always thought Lena was so beautiful! My mother and aunt went to Manhattan to see her show "Lena Horne: The Lady and Her Music" in the mid-eighties. I was so p.o.'d that because of work I couldn't go! They came back screaming about how incredible Lena was, and at such an age that she was then! Thanks again!
