Nice review. I have this laptop with a 4080, after I returned the Scar 18 due to fan noise. It's less powerful than the Scar, but much quieter(not using headphones at home).

How are the speakers holding up against the scar? Probably worse as far as ive seen about the scars speakers

@@maxsimes I think the ones on the Scar were better, but not by a long shot. The Nahimic software on Lenovo is helping a bit. I play sounds through desktop speakers, so for me this was not a decisive point.

Thank you for your honest review. I especially appreciate your addressing of what they've removed, which is one of my major gripes as to why I think their compromises should result in a lower price point than others in its category. Taking features away in order to reduce costs should also result in a lower cost to the consumer.

I have one with the 4090. Note: PL2 is always right around 160W for CPU due to 215A current limit. To get to 190ish watts the current limit would need to be raised to 255A it can be bypassed using XTU but this is at your own risk. Same with undervolting and overclocking. Now with these disclaimers out of the way. The variant to get vs price on the graphics card is the 4080 for most people. In most cases it is about 50% faster on average across all machines. At the 175W level it can be up to double as shown by your numbers because of the 4070's memory bandwidth issue. This overall should be the source of the difference in scores. Also, if you do not want to run an external 4k monitor you should be completely fine with the 12gb on the 4080. The 4090 will be about 5-10% faster than a 4080. Vicktor Okita and Reaper are correct about the 4070. Also, the 40 series are also running on the new architecture so they are a little more power efficient and have more of a power range. I bought a 4090 as a desktop backup and I use 4k monitors. Waiting to see which 64gb ram kit to get. All aftermarket seems to run at 4800 vs 5600. My 4090 Scores are as follows. /3dm/ follows www. 3dmark .com Port Royal: 13684 /3dm/92346018 Time Spy Extreme: 10172 /3dm/92346292 Speedway: 5599 /3dm/92346435 With undervolting and overclocks with performance profile. Note: Port Royal and Speedway should only be affected by Vantages limited overclock (+200 core +400 mem). You can use Msi afterburner as well. Disclaimer same as above. You do it at your own risk. Port Royal: 14345 /3dm/92347167 Time Spy Extreme: 10841 /edm/92347430 Speedway: 5794 /edm/92347596 Some of the overclockers in the Legion Discord are pushing out ridiculous numbers. 37k+ for cinebench r23 for example. You should have had the thunderbolt port on the left side as the usb-c type port. Agree on the features removed, but the cost sort of reflects that. Anyone buying from the lenovo site, use coupons, rakuten, and id.me if you have it. Mine was close to the equivalent of the Asus Scar 16 4080 with mini-led for price.

Nice review! I just happen to have the Legion Pro 7i too (with the 4070). I did upgrade the RAM to 32GB and added another 1TB SSD. So far, so good. I like Legion laptops for a lot of the reasons you mentioned. I also like the understated looks - including the reduced RGB. However, I've had a different experience relative to its performance. I ran the same benchmarks you did, but I had significantly different results. I got 7273 in Port Royal (about 34% better), 5974 in Time Spy Extreme (about 32% better), and 2913 in Speedway (about 30% better). My gaming experience has been good too. The 4070 won't be the go-to mobile GPU for ray tracing or 4k gaming, but it can perform better. I suppose it's possible you simply lost the silicon lottery... I know you mentioned you ran the tests plugged in and in Performance Mode. Did you also turn off hybrid mode (to run on GPU only)? Was AI enabled (although, I'm not sure how much it matters)? I assume you updated the drivers... Was G-Sync turned off? I believe 3DMark mentions G-Sync can impact testing.

Shawn, candid review, but you need to compare apples to apples with regards to GPU cards. Yet to see a positive review of RTX 4070 on any other brands. The actual issue is that the 4070 has lack lustre performance compared to the previous 3070ti. I believe the 3070ti beats the 4070 in some reviews I saw, not on Lenovo laptops. Try lay your hands on RTX 4080, which I have watched quite some reviews. Will love to see a head to head with the m16 rtx 4080. Yet to see any RTX 4090 on the new legion pro 7i. Regards

@@victorokita8171 because it is lackluster. Essentially speaking, the 4070 is literallly just 3070ti but with frame generation. You can watch Jarrod's video on that and his comparison was on laptops with full powered gpus. Though I don't think it's too bad since it's not that much more expensive that 3070ti laptops, not counting sales Imo, the 4060 and 4070 are basically just last year's 3060 and 3070ti but with frame gen and can also fit into much thinner laptops while the 4080 and 4090 are the ones geared for performance upgrade from last gen

Welcome back! Nvidia is being shady with the naming this year. With 4090 sitting at the top compared to last year's 3080, 4070 is the new 3060. Needless to say, the performance in 4070 is only pleasing when compared to 3060. It is pretty much 3070ti with DLSS 3 compatibility. That being said, I doubt any update on the firmware will increase its performance. And as a fellow Legion fanboy (I got myself Legion 5 Pro Gen 7), I hate to say that this year`s Legion is a disappointment.

Yes you can. In the vantage software, you will scroll down to the bottom right and there is an option called Legion Spectrum. In that you can turn it off. I have made profile 6 dark red keyboard with no bar for working at night in a dark room. fn+space switches spectrum profiles.

I don't think the issue is with lenovo, at least not a major portion of it. 4070 is just not worth. I'm getting mine with 4080 after seeing various benchmarks of 4070 (totally not worth the bucks)

He's reviewing a 4070. Alienware is garbage and thermal throttles constantly in everyone's testing and the Lenovo doesn't. It has much better cooling with the vapor chamber.
