Coming from a Mac for the last 4 years, being able to add upgrades to a laptop is so nice.

Sadly, it lacks the ethernet port. Your tutorial is great! I'm thinking to buy an used P1 from eBay...

I have a couple of comments. I own a P1 Gen 4, and if you have a GeForce RTX 3060, 3070, 3080 or 3090, there is no second NVMe slot (there may be others, but I am not sure, but from what I found, only if you have the Intel video adapters). The space is taken up by more cooling. The other thing is that I bought a Samsung 990 Pro with heatsink during Prime Day this year. I did not have time to install it until today, but about 10 days after the return period. I bought that version thinking that the heatsink was better, but unfortunately, the computer will not recognize it. I am going to confirm this, but I strongly suspect that it is because I did not have the original copper heatsink (nicely stamped that it is PCIe version 4) in place. It probably creates a connection that the system recognizes, and if it does not have that connection, it will not use it since it thinks that it will overheat. I could probably use a wire to jump it, but I am just going to buy one without the heatsink.

And where is socket for ethernet cable??? I have P1 Gen 2 and it has micro socket where you can plug in ethernet cable through adapter.

Thanks to your video I decided on buying a second hand P1 gen 4 with only 16Gb RAM and bought two 32gb sodimms the next day. So now I have a 64GB Thinkpad P1 with RTX A2000 and a 4k Xrite certified screen for my Postproduction needs. I'm considering upgrading to dual 4Tb Nvme drives, you think it will take them?

Thank you for this. I did the RAM upgrade a few hours ago on this laptop from 32GB (16 x 2) to 64 GB (32 x 2, Crucial DDR4-3200, 1.2V SODIMM) but the machine is now taking longer to boot - are there any special BIOS settings to verify? The Windows RAM test came back all good.

So just to verify, I will need to download the wifi drivers to the same usb stick with the windows creation media tool?

any reason you didn't populate the second ssd slot with the ssd you removed ? Also, I wonder if lenovo sells the heat spreader/sink for the second ssd separately ? My previous laptops haven't needed it. Is it because gen4 drives get more toasty ?

That's a good idea, can certainly throw it in there for a dual drive configuration. I was doing some SSD juggling at the time and didn't want to 'use up' the existing thermal pad on the nvm-e Gen3 side. That said, I've since put in a Samsung 970 Evo 1TB. Looks like it's idling at 41C right now. No additional thermal considerations beyond the bottom pad. There's no connection points (screws) on the Gen 3 side either. In general, yes the more data you're pumping through, the higher the power consumption (and heat). Tom's Hardware did some comparisons earlier in the year: www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-980-pro-m-2-nvme-ssd-review/2

Did you observe any chassis creaking after this installation?
@SpeakerFeature
@SpeakerFeature 3 жыл бұрын
No, but there's a chance it's not fully snapped in. Trying going around the under-side perimeter again and pushing it to snap back into place. If your screws were hard to get back in, that's another indication it wasn't 100% lined back up

You just have to disable the internal battery like I show in the video before removing the back cover. You don't want any of the electronics potentially powered while you're making modifications.
@alicson

@@SpeakerFeature Interesting. I've never once disabled the internal battery before opening my ThinkPads, and I've never heard advice to do so. I make sure the machine is off, not connected to anything. And then I open it up. I've watched a dozen on-site IBM technicians working on ThinkPads and never once went into power options/disabled battery. Not disagreeing with this step, just have never heard of it.

Just wondering, if I add the 2TB sdd to the gen 3 port without removing the existing sdd from the gen 4 port and I used the gen 3 port as the boot up drive it still works right? By doing so I need to copy the existing content from the gen 4 port to the sdd in the gen 3 port and make it the boot up disk then format away the gen 4 sdd
@SpeakerFeature
@SpeakerFeature 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that'll work. You just want the larger size as Gen3? You could always get a 2TB Gen4, clone, and swap locations. A bit more work (and likely thermal pad redo) but can maximize the Gen4 speed.

@@r00pea I didn't add memory. Crunched HD videos just fine. But I did replace the battery. Real straighforward. Six minutes, if that. Bought a 6th Gen Carbon X1. New battery in that as well. Equally drama-free.

Great share 👍 I got both legion 7i i9 cpu rtx3080 and p1gen4 labtop with same i9 cpu same rtx3080 gpu. Which one do you recommen to keep for performance use?
@SpeakerFeature
@SpeakerFeature 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Almost identical specs so at that point go with the one that fits you better. Not sure if you got the 4k version of the P1 display but they 7i might be able to hit higher frame rates at lower res if you're going to doing a lot of gaming. How noisy does the 7i thermal system get? Pretty noticeable? The P1 is probably more rugged with the environmental MIL spec compliance.

Disaster!! Can't get any support! Email support but never gets an answer anywhere! Have so many awful problems with my P1 Gen4 so it's embarrassing! I now hate my brand new computer due to all the problems! Obvious quality problems, color missing on keyboard buttons, fans jerking, white spot on the screen, battery life max 4h, longer battery life on macbook 15 "from 2011, bios updates that kill usb-c / TB4 ports, bluetooth problems, fan problems, sleep mode don't work properly (hot even though led is fading), usb-chime sounds al the time. Fresh windows 10 install with all drivers updated. Catastrophically Embarrassing!

This computer is so stupid and with no quality checks before selling to customers! I have color peeling off from keyboard on 3 keys, two BSoD, no way to turn computer off in BSoD (power button not responding), front most USB-A port is unreliable and fails large file copies to externa drive, computer running HOT in sleepmode (leds fading), bluetooth freezes every other second, computer sometimes loops every other minute with chimes like it is unplugging usb, rolling back to bios 1.14 due to dead usb-c ports, white spot in display... AND THE WORST PART IS THAT LENOVO WONT TAKE RESPONSIBILITY TO REPLACE IT! Blaiming the customer because it is "cosmetics" and doesn't cover by warranty, the customer has to pay!! Can only state lenovo is mafia BLACK MAILING its customers, sending out broken computers and only accept repair if the costumer pays even more!! I have been trying for over 4 months to get a replacement unit or repair, it was hard to even get an answer from the support! Eventually got an email to global pr at lenovo who send me to EMEA team, well they are only wasting my time blaming me for the "cosmetic" faults....
