I used x1 nano for a year at work (full stack web development), and it accomplished the job without any issues, that's how powerful it is, and at the same time, it is super lightweight and has sturdy built quality. The only thing I missed initially was the 4K display (having used xps before), but quickly got used to it after a while.

I’m not at all surprised that you find the Nano to be a great machine. I was issued a Thinkpad A30 in school, and I could hardly have hated it more. I called it “The Anvil” mainly due to it’s bulk and weight (about 7 pounds). My experience with that machine strongly informs my expectations for laptops, and it’s most of why I’m triggered by the “they-don’t-make-’em-like-they-used-to” sentiment common among Thinkpad enthusiasts. While I actually admire the effort some people put into upgrading a model like the T430 to it’s optimal configuration, the resulting machine will have a CPU which performs on-par with the low-spec i5 10210U in my X1 Carbon; but it also will have an inferior display, will be twice as thick (0.59” vs 1.17”), and will be twice as heavy (2.4lb vs 4.77lb). Despite this some enthusiasts talk as if current Thinkpads offer no advantage at all over their beloved older models. Those classic T-Series general-productivity models are bulkier and heavier than even my P1 workstation-class machine which has a 4K HDR touchscreen and a discrete GPU. So as often as I’ve heard people complain that Lenovo has ruined the Thinkpad series by chasing the trend of thin-and-light design for it’s own sake, these people have somehow forgotten that laptops are mobile devices and that bulk and weight undermine their utility.

I don't disagree with you for the most part. Times and requirements of portable computers change over time. As do the manufacturing capabilities. Comparing my T14 gen1 to my T420 or T61 is pretty stark. There's definitely the thinkpad DNA and heritage, but there's also a lot of improvements and refinement. I think my main compliant is how repairable and easy to upgrade older thinkpads are. I think there's a place for both thin and light options with soldered RAM and whatnot to be as portable as possible, and the T-series that's easy to take to bits and replace anything. I don't appreciate that I had to pay extra for soldered RAM just so I wasn't limiting myself. 8GB wouldn't be enough forever, and one SODIMM slot for future expansion isn't much. I think the X1 line is fine to solder the RAM because that's the portable options. But the T-series should always be more serviceable. The decision to trade off a bit of bulk for ease of repairs and upgrades should be on the consumer. I think there's a market for the dual battery system, or at least a battery I don't have to open the machine to swap. Until we have new battery chemistry, that will always be a guaranteed failure point. There should be two SODIMM slots on models lower than the P-series. And, really, there's room in the T14 for a 2.5" bay. At very least give us a second m.2 NVMe slot. I don't think we need 5 and 7lbs chonk books. But I would like to see more options for upgrades and repair. Anything that can fail shouldn't be permanent.

One other part is the repairability and upgradability is found on lines that many people ignore or dismiss because they aren't the series they are used to. The E series comes to mind now, very upgradable and I think those customers value that more. Businesses aren't upgrading as much as they used to I think and that is reflected on where the innovation is going.

@@zekezander I highly value upgradability in the two laptops I use for creative workflows. I confess that I don’t understand why it’s a big deal to be able to upgrade RAM for someone whose computing needs are limited to running general business-productivity apps. Up to Gen 3, both the X1 Extreme and P1 have dual RAM and SSD slots. (Depending on the selected GPU, Gen 4 models may have only 1 SSD slot.) So if upgradability is vital for some reason, it’s available in a Thinkpad - just not across the T-Series which is where some enthusiasts confine their interest. Let’s remember that Thinkpads are business laptops, and as such are primarily made to be attractive to corporate IT buyers. Upgradability is not a high priority for this market.

What I appreciate is that they made the X1 Nano _in addition_ to the X1 Carbon and regular T-series. If you want a good thin and light but want more ports, you can get the X1C. If you don't need it to be quite so thin and light, and want to save a few Benjamins, the T-series is great. Also, I think the T-series lets you replace more things yourself. I upgraded the SSD on mine about a week after I got it, and there's a SODIMM slot for RAM upgrades later on. I totally see the value in the portability and ease of carrying around for your job. Any tool that saves you time and effort can be worth it's weight in gold. I think the Nano line will be very popular for people that jobs have them on their feet and also needing a PC. There's only so much you can get away with on a phone. When I bought my T14 Gen1 AMD in 2020 the Nano wasn't a thing yet. But even looking back, the full size USB, Ethernet, and HDMI have come in handy more than a few times. And I appreciate I can throw in a 16GB stick of RAM and have a machine with 32GB. Great content as always. I think these videos will really help people thinking about what notebook they want to buy if the Nano is on their radar. :)

For me I have a P14s AMD gen 1 which is essentially the same as T14 gen 1 AMD lmao And honestly speaking i love this laptop It also runs linux flawlessly apart from the fact that sleep mode consumes relatively more battery compared to my previous Dell laptop (maybe amd moment lmao) and there is like a 100 page issue on the lenovo fourms on it

I just ordered an X1 Carbon Gen 6 with 2k resolution and i7 gen 8 and 16gb ram for personal use as im tired of my MBP 2016 for a personal one i fell in love with think pads and i think my next in 1-2 years would be the x1 Nano its just a tiny x1 carbon like an ipad feel to it with all the extra features. loving the thinkpads right now

Have had mine for 5 months now.. Got it for $850 on Lenovo Outlet, it's the non touch version. I take it to work daily , no case.. manhandled daily and it's still in perfect condition. I use my phone charger at work to charge if I need to which is rare. The weight and the power are fantastic. Hands down my favorite laptop I've ever had. I'd say the only thing that could make it better for me is a 360degree hinge so it was a 2 in 1.. but then it likely wouldn't be as light and it'd be a little bigger. Also I wish the 12th gen intel's weren't so much faster! It's gonna make me want to get a gen 2. I use mine mainly for day trading/thinkorswim... also been playing the re-release of ChronoCross on it too.

Honestly, my creteria for laptops are few. 1. Has 3 physical buttons on trackpad 2. Uses soddim ram (so I can upgrade) and 2 ssd slots 3. Battery to last a day's use 4. Decent gpu and processing speed for productivity. Most lack point 2 or 3. Great to see you enjoying your lappy

So glad to see these long term updates! I had ordered a nano last year when my Samsung N9 (which is the lightest 13in laptop in the world at 787gr) died but it took months to arrive and in the meantime the Samsung magically resuscitated.... so I cancelled the order.... The gen 2 has me interested for one main reason: there is a 32GB RAM option. My Samsung and my desktop have respectively 16 and 32 GB RAM and neither can be upgraded to Windows 11 (7th gen Intel), so this might replace both... I am not in a hurry and I can wait a good sale, but this is a laptop I am definitely monitoring and I am planning on buying at some point (probably a maxed out version with cellular as a long term investment...). The only sad thing is that the SSD is a 2242 I believe so there is no option to replace it with more than 1TB....

@@LaptopRetrospective In the Swiss lenovo site I am looking at they only say Gen 4 PCIe up to 1TB, they don't say if it's still 2242 but I guess it is. If it were 2280 I could replace it with up to 8TB drives.... That's the only downside because with 32GB RAM this thing can last for many years, but storage is the only thing where there is no expansion past 1TB. Still this is the most interesting laptop around for my needs (the keyboard is extremely important to me in particular, for instance I can't stand a keyboard like that of the surface pro, the minimum for me is one such as that of the Surface book, which I own, or that of my HP Elite laptop which is even better, but I have no doubt the Nano keyboard will be at least as good...)

Yeah, looks like it will still be a 2242 SSD. In my mind, this device isn't mean to heave around loads of files. More like a take what you need and dock for the rest situation. Having owned both a SB2 and Nano, the keyboards on both are excellent in my opinion.

I like this channel, and it was partly based on this that I got the X1 Nano. I like it, but my battery life is nothing like yours. I don't even have the touch screen, but am typically getting 3-4 hours, which is really dissatisfying. If it was giving me 8-10 hours it'd be perfect but as it is I always have one eye on the battery charge. Shame. I wonder if there's manufacturing quality issues.

My Nano will be 1yo on July 5th, I have the non touch model. I'm working on a trilogy and use the laptop daily for writing books and scripts. Only wear is a dead pixel in the screen and some surface spots on my touchpad. And there are 4 nicks, look like drill holes, on the bottom facing edge of the screen bezel. Am not sure if they are intentional and serve a purpose, or something heavy maybe pressed into the laptop when it was closed and left 4 notches. Edit: my battery lasts about 5 hours. All I use is Dabble and/or Firefox with maybe 5 tabs open.

I'm currently on the fence about getting a used X1 Nano gen 1 or a new Gen 2 (whenever that comes) to supplement my P53, but really on the fence. I have a 25th Anniversary that I'm using as a "thin and light" right now, but really want something lighter going forward.

I can't really justify getting the Gen 2 for what would really be for the better Communications Bar, having the Gen 1 already. If I was doing it over again now I'd compare the new Carbon against the Gen 2 Nano. The T25 is pretty cool!

YES! I wanted that experience since I looked for my first Laptop ever! I got that experience with a DELL E6200 but keyboard was too bas aswell as the screen and performance :O X201s came near that weight though but the screen was even worse, the worst I ever experienced so I'm looking for that light device since then The Carbons are still too heavy for ultracompact. I am wating for Gen 2 now. For more worskaton-purposes I use P1 Gen3 i9 (Octa).

It shows plugged in and now the only way to charge is the cable. Did you face this problem? How can I solve it? Thanks again

Make sure the firmware of the docking station is updated. There is a utility to do that. After, check your cable between the laptop and the dock.

i wish i got decent battery life. battery saver mode, using Edge browser, i get like 4hrs maybe 5 if just on idle. this computer has the worse battery life. fingerprint reader doesnt work well, it seems after 1-2 weeks the reader has trouble reading my finger, i re-register my finger, it seems ok and then has trouble again.

I get nowhere near 7-8 hrs on my X1 Nano. As soon as the screen brightness is up to where the screen is easy to read the battery life plummets. Maybe I have a bad one. I also find the bootup time is not as fast as some have claimed.

@@LaptopRetrospective they replaced my battery and it's much better now though still not what they claim it should be. The old batter showed 49kwh capacity but 38 usable. New one is 49/49. I would say I can average 4-5 hours now on a charge with regular use, outlook, chrome and some either software I use for work.

Interesting. To me it sounds like there are processed running in the background that are draining battery. I'd be checking power output closely with a monitoring program. I've had sneaky Windows updates do it before.

does your nano get hot very often? i just got it 2 weeks in and it overheats pretty fast even in normal windows situation

@@LaptopRetrospective i have updated all firmware and bios and in windows i get about 60 degrees idle and in ubuntu about 45-50 degrees idle but when i stress test, it always goes to 99 degrees. Is this normal in your case?

@switchbrown9861 define stress test? Those are generally made to push the units so higher temperatures.arent uncommon. You can see one of my earlier videos for thermal performance information.

@@LaptopRetrospective i use s-tui for stress testing in Linux. While just doing light task on windows, the balanced and max performance mode while charging will ramp up the temp and the fan seems to run at full speed and it's so annoying. Is it normal for windows to run so hot even when not doing anything?

Nope, not normal at all. I rarely ever hear the fan the close-to three years I've owned it.

Hello again, hope you are doing well, what are the Thinkpads in smartphones? I’m not really into smartphones so before I pick one? I’m between Apple and Sony Xperia, I don’t know about Samsung or Motorola.

I really enjoy my Google Pixel 4a, but I like small phones. I've enjoyed the idea of Sony phones but the price, availability and OS hit me lukewarm. Never had a Samsung I hated and Motorola gestures are pretty darn cool.

I'm a fan of Xperia Compacts, but not their latest models, which all have the same crazy-tall aspect ratio. One thing I loved is the third-party Flashtool. You can easily revert to any stock firmware with it, as long as you have the ROM downloaded (which people do archive and share at XDA forums). For legal reasons, the North American firmware of the XZ1 series did not have the fingerprint reader enabled, so I flashed to a European ROM. Pretty much stock Android, although with Xperia launcher. I have a Samsung tablet from some years back and it is full of Samsung crapware. Luckily, it was still back in the days of easy rooting.

Having trouble decide whether to go with the touch or non-touch version screen, any advice?

Touch devices tend to hold their value in the second hand market since they are more rare and feature that carbon weave lid. The weave lid also hides fingerprints better. The touch screen for me is nice but not essential for how I use my device. Hope that gives you some things to consider.

how is the fan noise for you? for me its always running and what is the point on using a laptop on batteyr saver forever limiting the CPU by 50%?

@@LaptopRetrospective I run one virtual Machine using hyper V. And usually just browsing on chrome wiht 5 tabs. That is it. And the fan never stops on charger or the battery when it is on Better performance or Best performance.
