01-07-2023 Thanks, this was very helpful. My laptop has "Fan_error" during startup. I thought maybe it just need a little cleaning since it's a little old so I tried doing it on my own. Followed each and every step. I successfully disassembled and assembled it. Finally, laptop did not show the error anymore. Suggestions for people who will attempt this: 1. Make sure to take pictures of the connections and where the screws needs to be placed. It helps when assembling it back again. 2. Be careful when removing the connectors/wires especially the display and trackpad. Do not pull. There is a lid that is keeping it in place so unlock it first. 3. Be as gentle as possible. You do not want to have errors after you turn it back on once you finished assembling.

After the hard drive, the fan is the probably the part people are most often going to want to access, so it really sucks that they make you disassemble EVERYTHING else before you can take it out 🤦Also would be better if it was possible to replace it without taking the heat sink off the CPU, but oh well. To people saying blowing compressed air from the top is enough: It's probably good enough in most cases, but at 8:31 you can see that a lot of dust also gets stuck in the heatsink/exhaust fins, which I don't think you'll get rid of that way. Anyway, thanks for the video!

Thank you for your helpful video. Damn, this laptop is a pain to disassamble. And I only needed to replace the battery. (The inner one.) On the side note, you don't need to take the laptop completely apart just for cleaning the fan. Only until the fan is exposed. Then you just stick a small screwdriver betwean the blades to keep them from moving, and spray compressed air betwean the lades to spray all the dust out. Also if the laptop doesn't heat up excessively and isn't laud, then the fan is fine and doesn't need cleaning.
@LaptopDisassembly
@LaptopDisassembly 4 жыл бұрын
Well you can check the fan by using just your hand. If the air that is coming out is hot, thN everything is fine. If no air is coming you need to clean the fan. I dont use compressed air, becouse i have seen broken blades from it. Also depend on the fan design the dust can go in the laptop also.

Hi there. I have a Lenovo x230, got it 6 months ago, almost new. Used as second laptop. Yesterday it did not start on. Power button lights on, green color, the keyboard and the webcam lights on, also the speaker and microphone buttons (orange color) and the icons of the wifi and CPU on the lower screen bezel lights on when I push the power button. Then all go off except for the power button. The only thing that does not lights on is the finger print sensor, which blinks always in green color. No noise at all, no beeps, just the vibrations of the CPU (HDD) when touching the PC underneath. After a couple of minutes, it feels a little hot underneath, where the CPU units go. What I have done to check it: 1. Power button test, pressing it for 1 minute while no battery o power cord connected. 2. Remove of the CMOS 3. Remove of the RAM sticks and replaced by similar from a running PC. 4. Tried booting without CMOS 5. Replaced CMOS 6. Tried booting without RAM 7. Tried booting without HDD 8. Tried booting without KEYBOARD 9. Tried booting without PALMREST 10. Left overnight without battery and power cord. 11. Tested the CMOS with a multimeter, resulting in 3V reading. I refuse to think the motherboard is toasted, so I hope someone might have some experience in what could be the fault. Things to look out: the finger print scanner and the fact that the CPU get warm (while the power button shows on), as in a regular PC when working. Also, the fact that the computer behavior at starting attempts with and without CMOS battery is the same. Provably the BIOS chip? Note that I have not tampered with this PC at all. I bought it from a Lady that almost never used, she got it as a payment, and stored it. Since I have a T440P as daily use, I did not start use the X230 much, which is stock in hard drive, RAM (4) and everything else, so it is very slow. Video of the X230 not booting kzbin.info/www/bejne/rXbYcn1qZ9eUjNU Edited Jan 25th. adding a 2nd informative video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hH2sqIJ5ityMb7s

Cool instruction. Is that the fan assembly has a difference between x220 and x230. The X230 fan mount has 2 screws and one latch, while the x220 has 3 screws. Moreover, the hole for the screw matches only in one place. So if you change the fan, then you need to take a specific model for x 2020 or x230
@LaptopDisassembly

The fan should be for the particular model. Sometimes the fans are similar but with a different mount. You can use it with one hole only, but is better go find the right model.

When I took mine apart I think the antennas that connect to wifi card got damaged because even after buying a new card it still wouldn't detect. So what I did was got a USB female to mPCIe and just stuck a small USB wifi adapter inside my laptop and the shit actually works. The problem is the BIOS of these Thinkpads contains a limited "whitelist" of cards it will accept. Namely: Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 - FRU 60Y3195 Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 - FRU 60Y3233 Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 - FRU 04W3769 and 60Y3253 ThinkPad b/g/n Wireless (1x1 BGN) - FRU 60Y3247 and 60Y3249 Updating the BIOS to 2.71 might help, but I don't think so. With an SPI Flash programmer, (and physically removing the BIOS chip), you can change this whitelist by reflashing the BIOS. This requires some knowledge of hardware hacking chips as well as the equipment.

Always when cleaning the fan change the thermal paste. The life of the good thermal paste is about 1-2 years. Change it with good one Arctic mx-2 or mx-4 and the temperature and rpm will go down. Don't play games now... 100 degrees are not good temperature at all. You can kill the cpu.
