Thank you for calling this out, Louis! Your feedback is greatly appreciated, and we hear you. The FAQ page in question has since been taken down and will be reviewed to ensure it correctly reflects Lenovo's views on refurbished products. We know that smarter, more sustainable technology solutions are as big of a priority for our customers as they are for us, and we want to be clear that we encourage buyers to explore refurbished options from authorized resellers. For this reason, many Lenovo computers are designed to be easily serviceable and repairable, and Lenovo has set goals to improve the serviceability and repairability of our PCs even more. We hope that you continue to be part of the Lenovo community.

I just finished redoing a Lenovo T-5 tower . It had numerous latent defects that were installed by Lenovo. The cpu cooler needed to be replaced as the cpu was slowly cooking itself with the old one. Lenovo put in place a few bombs to stop you from upgrading. They installed a shield over the back of the motherboard to prevent you from doing this upgrade. They used a plate on the underneath of the cpu that when you upgrade and remove the screws to the cooler they fall to the bottom of the installed plate nictating the total removal of the motherboard. The wires on the wi-fi card are so tight they break when removing the wi-fi card taking out the wi-fi and blue tooth on the motherboard. This is just a few of the latent defects you will encounter when replacing the cooler. Luckily I am a computer tech with 40 years experience so I managed to replace the cooler. The temp of the cpu went from 90-100C to 24C. I Actually had fun fixing all the latent defects they installed but it was a large job requiring many hours to fix. MORAL DONT BUY A LENOVO COMPUTER

THIS! Bought a refurb DELL Latitude E7450 from my local PC Shop and put Debian 12 on it. Runs like a brand new system. Only time I buy brand new is if I want a gaming PC to replace a dead PC (R.I.P Lenovo ThinkCentre M82 Refurb). Replaced with an HP Pavillion with AMD Ryzen 5 5600G and I added the RX 6400 GPU that was in my old ThinkCentre. I ONLY BUY NEW to replace super old desktops. Laptops, refurbs are cheaper.

To be fair they had a few years run where they made good laptops. I think they are still a valid option: Is not like they are good, it is just that competition also has lowered their standards a lot, so while year to year Lenovo laptops are worse, the competition is worse too. But to be honest, after using Thinkpads since 2005, I am not getting a new one after my E15 dies. Which considering its quality might not be too far off in time. If I need to get shit, at least I can do it without paying a premium.

If they don't solder them how can they sell you more computers down the line? The unfortunate thing is that the companies I used to vouch for, for not doing that stuff are starting to do it today, I would not be surprised if the batteries are not soldered as well. Even Software is going to the pay per month model rather than selling you their traditional Perpetual Licensing just so they can squeeze every dime, nickle and penny out of your pocket. And once you are broke and they have devoured the last drop of blood out of you, they move to the next victim.

@@Tomas-yg1xz did that for my little brothers brand new PC, it's pre-build since it's actually cheaper to buy pre-build than build it yourself here. When I purchased my PCs from them they used to give me an option to simply not have a windows installation provided (I can do this myself) but now I could only choose the windows options (just choose the free windows 10 home option) I received the PC at my place, installed the gpu, hooked it up and instantly wiped the entire thing and did a clean install, then also installed the things he wanted on it, like Steam, Roblox, Epic Game Store and the like. After having an HP laptop that is so bloated that the laptop itself struggles to even open task manager, I decided to never let a company pre-install windows again. (also, that my m.2 was somehow locked from getting a new installation from Windows, so the store that repaired it back then installed Win10 legacy with no way to upgrade, had to google my issues and found a workaround to finally wipe my entire m.2 into a installable state again, had to boot from USB installer, try to install (fails) unplug the usb, try again (it says it can't find the installation obviously) plug the usb back in and then it magically works, still no idea why, but it's 1 thing that i'll never forget)

@Soapy-chan
@Soapy-chan 3 ай бұрын
@@nonsensicalrants1703 not sure if you're genuine but if so: - Backup your files on an external hard drive. - download "Media creation tool" either for Win10 or Win11 depending on your device. - put in an USB stick 8Gb or more and run the MCT. - when the program says it's done, restart the PC, go to Boot Settings either via DEL, F2 or F10. - select the USB, reboot, then Windows Installation should appear. Then do the stuff it says until it asks you if you want to use automatic install or manual - select manual, it should show you where to install and your harddrive or ssd. Select everything that is there and click delete until there is only one left and it says "new" underneath. Then click on continue (no need to click on new) and it installs windows. - after a while it starts from windows and voila you have a clean install. Now you need to install gpu drivers if you have a pc and if it's a laptop you shouldnt have to do anything. When in doubt you can google for your device and see if you need some drivers, some laptops need extra drivers so that the mousepad works and stuff like that. - install the updates and copy back the files you need from the external hard drive and you're all set

@Louis Rossmann - I upgraded a couple Toshiba laptops that I was given because they ran too slow. I researched them and found that they could take 2nd gen i7 processors (although not officially documented). When I tried to get the processors, a used motherboard seller tried to tell me that the boards would burn up if I installed them (THEY LIED PROFUSELY). The processors were the same TDP as the old ones, and the same socket design. I bought them anyway and installed them, and the laptops are now perfectly usable - in fact better than usable. They run great, and have been for months. I think there is something going on in the industry to force everyone to buy new computers. Look at Microsoft's move to keep people from using Windows 11 on older machines.

I'm late to the party, so i don't know what's going on. Picked up a Lenovo T14? last year, because my "tough book" got stolen out my car, w/ a broken rear window for a side dish, right before my birthday. Main reason I got it was because it has the "nipple?" & it could let me upgrade the RAM? to 32gb (which I ended up doing) because the damn thing would end up crawling just after connecting to the internet. I disabled the mouse pad, because I don't understand who in their right mind puts the "mouse" buttons on top of the pad, instead of vice versa. Can confirm I've givin this thing a beating, and it works enough that I still havent chucked into the sh+ can. Thing deff warms up, but all in all, it's all right. one of these days I'll work up the courage to install Linux Mint or Ubuntu on it....one of these days.

I have a 4500u one that's got the weirdest behaviour in the bios where the CPU is burning up and the bios is so slow. I assumed it was a hardware fault but I cannot find any fault and it runs perfectly after you boot. It's bizarre never in my 22 years doing IT have I seen anything like it. If I get some time next week I'm going to sandbox it on the network and start poking it to see what it's doing. And yeah, reading up on this it does appear no part of the eufi stacks safe it's all be actively compromised in the last 12 months.

I agree with this video 100% and have certainly bought used PCs myself. I will recommend buyers to still be vigilant because nowadays certain malware types can be persistent after a full wipe (such as UEFI resident viruses), or the PC may come equipped with something like Computrace which is a BIOS enabled feature and not OS. Computrace allows for tracking and such so it can be a problem. Basically if you buy a used PC, wipe and reload of course and check for any Computrace settings in BIOS if it applies to your model (especially older Dells)

Framework's currently in a safe spot cuz they're really the only ones making such products so they can pretty much expand in their own bubble Every other manufacturer is competing tooth and nail with each other, dropping the price further to keep themselves competitive and that, I think, is the main reason as to why this stuff is happening. They bloat with stupid ass mcafee (the amount of PCs I've seen this cancer on is staggering) to make a bit of money back on the loss of profit selling the hardware. They lock down parts and solder them to the motherboard, and now this bs Lenovo propaganda. It's a sort of a vicious cycle cuz consumers want good hardware, they buy it, but then they don't upgrade for like a decade, the manufacturer only made money in that purchase, they get desperate and call for sketchy ways to squeeze out more money (cuz they wouldn't be able to afford to make such hardware in the future) and so they make the devices more fragile and unrepairable to make the customer buy another device.

Some indication it had had a previous life in the military, in the "sandbox," and in fact a few years later I opened it up and there was sand under the keyboard. I later got a Panasonic ToughBook Cf31 which is even more of a tank, also refurbished. With 16 gb of memory, a Tb SSD and new keyboard it only cost me $800 with an 80/20 partition of Ubuntu/Win10 installed. 11th gen you will have a poor experience don't forget about hardware vulnerabilities that has been discovered and those can't be patched the only thing you can do Is to give real time priority to your AV to check those instruction set for example 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1145G7 @ 2.60GHz has following vulnerability - Speculative Store Bypass (SSB): Susceptible, Transactional Asynchronous Abort (TAA): Affected, Shared Buffers Data Read (SBDR), Sideband Stale Data Propagator (SSDP) Vulnerability: Affected , Primary Stale Data Propagator (PSDP) Vulnerability: Affected, Post-barrier Return Stack Buffer Predictions Vulnerability: Affected, and that is the cpu alone and if your motherboard has some chips that can be used as a IPMI

It’s funny how much they emphasize warranties. They neglect to mention how most companies just make excuses to deny you and have numerous loopholes written in to the warranties that allows them to not honor it when it’s well within its time frame. Or like with phones you don’t just get to exchange your broken phone for a new one so you’re not without a phone like they lead you to believe. No you’ll have to send it in so they can inspect it and determine if they’re even going to honor your warranty or replacement program. Then in like 2 weeks they’ll let you know if you can get a new phone.

Recently I threw together a budget gaming pc using an old lenovo office pc. The Lenovo Thinkcenter P310 to be exact. It came with an i7-6700 and 8 gigs of ram. I added a 650w power supply, another 24 gigs of ram for a total of 32, a 1TB sata ssd, and an RTX 2060. Combined total I only spent $480. The cpu is a little bit of a bottleneck in some demanding titles but other than that it performs flawlessly in almost every aspect. Technology has gotten so good that we're almost at a point where the price of new hardware is hard to justify. The used/refurbished market just offers too much value for your money.

I used to work as a PC bench technician 25 years ago and I did it for 10 years. I honestly thought that people would be much much better with computers. I thought that kids coming up now would be at genius level in 20 years. How utterly wrong I was. The problem is people don't care about technology like I or we do, they just want it to work, period, to them it's just a tool and NOTHING more. As a result they HAVE to trust what a manufacturer will say. Instead of reasoning like they do in everyday life, they just switch off and buy a new one.

I was recently building PC for my friends office, she was mind blown I can build it from parts, so I asked her to help me, guess what? I agree with you about identity confusion in discussions about politics and technology. However, in my experience, very few vendors have as much integrity as the Rossman Group. A colleague of mine developed relationships with a couple of big PC refurb factories in Toronto that were doing OEM refurb work for the big 3, and was offering refurbs to veterinary hospitals who wanted to cut their hardware costs. He had so many problems with these "factory certified" machines, that he has abandoned them completely.

I've gone to my local PC shop to buy old computers as towers, full server towers laptops, and small form factor PCs. All of them were being replaced with company upgrades. They all did what I was looking to use them for. Laptop batteries were a given, they wouldn't hold a change for very long. But new RAM sticks and a new hard drive meant I could save a lot of money, get a good PC, while still living within my budget. I don't need to have the latest or greatest. Not one of my computers has a screen better than 1366x768. That is the same for their TVs that I use as monitors. Where I shop they have their own technicians to fix the machines, to make upgrades, to build custom computers to meet the needs of their customers using new or used parts.

I wish some companies went back to, umm, different charge strategies than they have now. I had a Gateway that was like 10-12 years old when I bought it, and it held 92% of the original charge. When I retired it a few years later (it was pretty slow..) it still held 88%. Original battery. The thing took like 6-7 hours to charge, the slow charging massively increased the battery life compared to these newer ones where it'll try to top it up in like an hour. I actually THINK some Thinkpads do have the option to switch charging rate, to their credit. I have not heard of any other vendor doing this.

I just want the damned things to work. After a day of staring at a screen, that last thing I want to do is go home and fix anything IT related. It has an 8th gen Core i7, 16 gigs RAM and a 512gb NVME drive. Brand new in 2020, with the same specifications, the thing retailed for $2k. Buying new computers just isn't worth it for me.

I bought a Lenovo brand new from them, bought the warranty extension with "Next business day on-site Service" plan. Took them a month to finally schedule a call and get someone out to fix the problem. I kid you not. Daily calling, repeating what I told the last representative, sending pictures, running their diagnostic software, and then them saying they would ship the parts ahead of a technician coming out. Parts never came, called them again, went through the same crap again on the phone day after day, supervisor after supervisor, finally got the parts and finally got the technician a week after that to fix it. So this is their "support" that I should be using instead of some 3rd party? GIVE ME A BREAK! Never again Lenovo, NEVER again!

In my country we can easily buy refurbished computers for about 100-600 dollars in very good condition, with reasonable configurations, warranty typically 6-24 months. And I typically choose Thinkpads, HP Probook or Elitebook or similar Dells and they work fine. I have bought like 10 of them in last 10 years and none of them has died in warranty time. Many of them are working for 5 years+. You just need to choose reasonable specs, test it before buying and use it in sane way... And yes, I typically do clean install of either related Windows version or some Linux distribution right after buying it.
