What I use for a fast way of finding a missing connection, is a cable braid. Like for example from a coaxial cable shielding, or a solder wick. You make a brush, attach it to one probe, and swipe across the board. Btw. you meant to say a two diode logical OR connection.

Hello Sorin, first of all, thanks for the video. I experienced the same issue today... (I'm in the learning phase, and I bought a laptop exactly like this one with a possible display defect, as it worked via HDMI). I didn't have a dedicated charger... so initially, I used 5V 1.5A via USB, and it started to power on. I gradually increased it to around 19-20V, then increased the amperage to 2.2A... it started to charge. I left it for a while, then I unplugged it... after which I plugged it back in without lowering it to 5V... short circuit... spark... and pretty much done with charging. :))) Now, my question is, did the chip ultimately solve the problem?

New Lenovo laptops use usb c charger which has variable voltage up to 20v. This seems to be a bad design; they have gone mad creating complex charging for laptops when ~ 20v is fine! You can use 2 usb connectors for charging and you would think they would put one either side of the laptop which is a great for convenience but they dont!

@gianseven3 жыл бұрын
Look at 1:04:21, when he injects voltage and the chips starts becoming hot. In this case there was not a 0 ohm short, when he injected voltage it started becoming hot but there was some resistance and it was only taking 500mA, which is too much for the chip itself but it's probably not enough to be detected by a thermal camera if you don't already know where to look for
@Infiniti253 жыл бұрын
@@gianseven He injected 2.68v at 540mA...that should be over 1Watt of power, it certainly would be a visible difference on a thermal camera

@@gianseven Thanks for the reply. Injecting voltage earlier on at the capacitor Sorin attached a wire to, may have revealed the same issue much earlier on. If the heat can make the alcohol dance like that, its releasing more than enough heat to be detected on a decent thermal camera.

Thank you for the lesson, Sorin. This case has great resemblance to the common USB-C charging faults among Macbooks. Louis Rossmann has a recent example of a USB-C controller failing to negotiate the proper 20V charger voltage ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6S7nmOne9CWm5I ). In Macbooks, this is done by a CD3215 in most cases. The fault in Rossmann's case also only pulled 5V. Replacing the USB-C charging IC fixed the problem. Looks like this Lenovo unit followed the Macbook design.

What he said it's true, if he had done an inspection under the microscope he could have saved some time, (but he probably would have found it later as he first checked one side trying to understand the circuit) many times something this tiny can be overlooked and when you understand what the circuit does you start to look closer for broken stuff around that suspicious IC, but you always could have noticed that before reverse engineering by just looking at it for 10 minutes. Happens all the time with lifted pads/broken traces in vintage hifi equipment. Look at the schematic, try to test a transitor that could case problems if broken and discover one leg is not soldered or its pad it's not connected to the trace anymore, could have started by touching random stuff with your fingers but have been sucked into the black hole of schematics/reverse engineering
