Fun fact: Canon extenders not only extend the focal range but also the f-stops. some cameras dont focus on stops above 8. So if you combine a 5.6 lense with a 2x extender you will have to use manual focus because the camera wont focus correct on auto focus. BUT ... if you use KENKO extenders the f-stops "stick" to the lense original stops, at least they dont recalculate the f-stops, they just tell the original lens-stops to the camera. I have tried this with my old "Canon 1D" and the "80-200mm 2.8 L" in combination with a "KENKO 3X TELEPLUS PRO 300" a 3x extender. Focus is on point - as long as the object is far enough away. I also tried it with my not-so-old 1DX and the 70-200mm 2.8 L IS II USM - no chance to get them working with the KENKO in autofocus. It shows 2.8 but wont focus at all. Then i switched the lenses on the cameras (old cam with new lens and new cam with old lense) and now the new cam/old lense with 3x Kenko is on point with focus and the old cam/new lense struggles. I also tried a 70-200mm 4.0 L IS USM ... no chance to get it on autofocus with the 3x Kenko on old and new cam. Finish line: old lense wins over new lense. I love my old stuff for some reason. ^^

i have the MP-E65 and the extender but i never came to the idea to combine them for more magnification. Tomorrow that will change. ^^ ... couldnt sleep for some reason so i grabbed my MP-E65 and combined it with one and then two of the "KENKO 3X TELEPLUS PRO 300". on my 1DX. With one 3x extender i "managed" to shoot freehand onto my TV/monitor with 15x magnification and then two 3x extenders to get 45x magnification ... with an additional 2x Canon extender at 90x magnification you can almost see the electrons of an atom. ^^ i need a really good tripod and more light to get sharp pictures. Next objects will be my old CPUs ... DIE shot.

i had a different extender and it took alot to focus and lock on a image. does this happen often?

Important info: only the older, type series II Canon teleconverters were working with the older manual lenses. Even if you have either a chipped or a chipless M42 adapters, the newer series III teleconverters were not working with them and you will get a Error 01 code. The LiveView will working, you could make a video, but the photo shooting is impossible.

Sadly, that is normal. That lens is known to not be supported with this extender.
