Lens Test - Canon FD (Shot on Ursa Mini Pro 12K)

We've tested our Canon FD lenses in combination with the Ursa Mini Pro 12K for an upcoming project. Our goal was to test the image quality and to compare shooting without filtration and with. Also testing the motion and jitter while shooting handheld (shoulder).

I'll have to test that lens a bit more, but at that moment I was shooting with the last light of the day. So f4.0 was kinda pushing the sensor, it would probably look more in line with the rest if there was a bit more light available.

Beautiful work! Curious about your grade and how you added 16mm - did you use a program like film convert or Dehancer? Again, really nice work!

Hi Heroa! The grade was super simple, I first did some basic gamma/curve corrections to get the footage more low in the waveform. Which makes it look more cinematic and toned down. I used FJ 8563 RL film stock from Filmconvert and for film grain I used the 16mm fine grain texture from Ezrah Cohen set to overlay.

i just got my hands on the 24mm 2.8 using black pocket 6k and it just look filmic i tried a sigme 24mm 1.4 which is very sharp but something about the look of vintage lenes are amazing

Holds up well on the shoulder. Super fast rolling shutter really helps. Would love to've seen more of the 55mm. Really nice though. I think the 24 and 35 are the best overall, most versatile of the lot.

Since you only have modded your lenses to fit EF, that means there is still a crop factor here, so the lenses are tighter than what they really are?

Has nothing to do with the lens mount :-) But with the size of the camera sensor! With the 12k sensor you have a slightly larger than s35 sensor area with a 1.3x crop factor.

Thanks Wyatt! I ordered EF conversion kits from simmodlens.com. Since I'm from The Netherlands, I didn't want to risk sending the lenses to the USA to get them converted, so I did the conversion myself with the help from some KZbin videos. It's not too hard actually... Simmod sells everything for a complete cinemod. Are you thinking about getting a FD set?

Are you jocking? This camera has no noise pattern or grain. Something went terribly wrong with the compression here I guess, look at 2:30 in the shadow...

Would you consider recording in 12K then downscaling to 8K in post instead of recording directly to 8K?

To be honest, you will get the highest quality from recording in 12K (I think about 0.3 stop more dynamic range), but for most shoots it's just too much data to handle given the budgets and time constraints. But 8K looks absolutely stunning as well!

I have the URSA G2 and have the FD lenses on the way! Did you use an adapter or did you "mod" the EF mount to the lens from SIMMOD. Seeing some mixed reviews on which is more ideal for using these lenses.

I use modded lenses with SIMMOD. All my lenses are EF mount, so this was the only option for me. I don't want to change out my lens mount every time I go out shooting. CanonFD's are great, but not for every project.

The Tokina 17mm f3.5 AT-X Pro(from the 90’s) matches perfectly with FD’s, is much cheaper and the front element doesn’t rotate, so you can use it with matte boxes and Vari ND. I actually sold my FD 17mm after getting one.

@@WanderAndringa you want to look for the AT-X Pro, it doesn’t have permanent hood. If you want manual aperture get the Nikon and convert to EF with the Simmod adapter.

Nice footage! I'm wondering though, is the 35mm f2.8 at the 1:00 mark a typo? At the beginning for your lenses (and in the description) you say 35mm f2.0. I'm mostly wondering because I have an fd 35mm f2.8 that I'm waiting on a conversion kit for and I'm having a hard time finding decently composed footage lmao

Most lenses don't have a significant difference, maybe coating. But a few do, like the 35mm for example has a different element design. The older SSC version has a concave front lens element and thorium in the glass. Which in my taste looks better than the nFD. Other than that there's a difference in build, where the nFDs are build more light for photography use.. But at this point seeing how rare these lenses are becoming, I wouldn't shy away from building an entire nFD set they are amazing.

This was with the EF mount on the 12K. The Canon FD lenses are modded to EF as well. I used conversion kits from 'SimmodLens' to mod them myself.

How you got no flares ? The car moving behind with the light are giving zero flares. Have you used matte box for it ?

It's a really good camera actually. I just finished shooting a short movie project on it (will share some stills/footage in the UMP user group on facebook soon). I don't see any other camera manufacturers competing at that price point. To me Canon and Sony just don't offer camera's that deliver a cinematic image (except for the Venice). To me the only true upgrade would be an Arri sensor.

It's subtle for sure, you will see it when you look at the source footage without compression. And you can spot it when looking at highlights (slight bloom).

How do you feel about the FDs now? I was thinking about starting the process of building a set. Also, how do you feel the 12K handles micro jitters and motion? I'm really happy with my UMP G2 but would love to grab a 12k eventually...

I'm still in love with the lens set, used it on a bunch of projects now for different clients. They have a ton of character! The UMP 12k has a super fast sensor read out, especially in 8k mode or below. Definitely superior to the readout of the G2 and most other S35 camera's. But to be fair, motion jitter has never been a problem to me in most modern cinema camera's. I guess it depends on the jobs you do! There's a lot of info you can find online about the sensor readout! It's great :)

@@tokyoniki9200 Well for one, when shooting 70mm IMAX you're shooting on celluloid film. So you get the whole analog film image that comes with it, with different highlight roll off and textures. Secondly the UMP12k sensor is a S35 sensor which doesn't even come close to the capture size of the 70mm format. If you'd want to compare a digital cinema camera to the 70MM imax camera you should look at the Alexa 65. Which has nearly the same sensor size :) Don't get me wrong, you could shoot a film on either of these sensors. But there are differences!

This new sensor pattern created 12K kind of as a side effect, but it downsamples to perfect 4K 444 RGB. It's like Sony's old masterpiece of a camera the F35. That 13 year old Sony sensor used a different pattern from the common bayer pattern as well, and it was a 5.7K sensor that delivered 2K footage at perfect 444 RGB. Even modern 8K Cameras don't deliver true 4K 444 RGB. Also, from tests done at cinema5d, when downsampled to 4K the Ursa 12K can recover 1 stop of dynamic range.

Holy moly the amount of noise even in the highlights of his cheek are unbearable. I can't believe all the positive comments here. How is no one seeing the noise? Maybe it's film grain? To me it looks bad. Also why do so much to the image to do a lens test? It's hard to see what it's actually doing with all the processing going on. This makes me not want to buy the URSA 12k. Can you do another with clean REC 709 renders?

KZbin isn't the best way to view test footage. Most test footage from different cameras has noise cause KZbin loves compression in videos. I would suggest just going to a rental house and doing your own test footage.

Maybe CVP, who has 400x your subscriber count. You titled this video a "lens test w/the the URSA 12K," not a special effects test, not a film emulation test. The 12K resolution of that camera resolves the limits of lens clarity and diffraction. Line pairs, halos. People click on your video to see high-resolution lens testing, that's what they expect by your title. Yet, by adding fake, artificial grain, you're taking incredible amounts of data and information and then.. obscuring it, presenting it to your audience like a kind of bait-and-switch. Doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that, my dude. P.S. If you're trying to emulate a film look, it's probably a good idea to not put black film grain in the highlights. It's so obviously fake, film has never and will never do that.

@@basic-decaf look mate I never intend or pretend to be a 'KZbinr'. I don't give two cents about my subscriber count, I don't have to share these video's. I could've kept them for myself, but I put them online because I do think some people like to see them. So far the response has been positive, people like to see different kind of looks and shooting styles you can achieve with sensors and lenses. They know where to look when they want to see a scientific test. Certainly not here anyway. And for me personally there's a ton of stuff I learned from shooting these tests. The characteristics of each specific lens, how they handle in real world scenario (can they handle wireless focus motors). How sharp are they wide open or stopped down. All these thing you will only find out when you actually use them and evaluate them timely in your NLE. The purpose of a lens test is also to give your director an idea of what's possible with it. And that was exactly what I did here... Thanks for the grain tip, I'm not a colorist so I'm sure there are people better qualified than me to take care of that. I'm for sure not hiring one to do a lens test.

Some of them are, you can find lists online. I believe some of them are the 17mm, four versions of the 35mm 2.0 and the 50mm 1.4 s.s.c. But supposedly you have to wear the lenses on you 24/7 for a whole year and still not be exposed to harmful radiation. Except for when you'd polish the lenses and breathe in micro dust from the glass but that is something which is/was only done in lens factories. If anyone has found a different reaserch outcome I'd be happy to hear :)
