This is an awesome review/comparison! I've been debating wether to get the Sony or Sigma for a while now and the only thing tipping me over to the Sony was the OSS but now that I got a Gimbal I'm gonna go with the Sigma. It definitely yields a better picture in my opinion!

It's always difficult. I love the slightly warmer and "better" imagine from the sigma, but the Sony glass just works better with the Sony body. The autofocus with the Sony doesn't hunt as much as it does with the sigma, and the extra OSS pulls through as a security against jitters. Thank you so much for the review.

There is one more thing for Sony lens - it's smaller. I went to E-mount for size and weight so it's quite important for me. If someone doesn't care about size Sigma is a clear choice. You didn't mention about CA - Sony can produce quite massive CA is contrast situation (purple fringing) while Sigma does a much better job.

I bought first the 35mm f1.8. Then I heard of the Sigmas. I bought the 16mm. It delivered 1/5 of the images completely missfocussed images. Until f4 the lens is soft at the sides. So probably I’m not going to try another lens of this series. I have the Sigma 150-600mm and there it seems I was lucky to get a properly sharp copy.

@mpikas2 жыл бұрын
It seems like if you're just shooting pics or mostly pics, get the Sigma, otherwise, it's not that easy. Since I shoot pics and video, reviews like yours are more and more pushing me towards the Sony. What I found interesting is that when everything is perfect then the sigma gets better pics/video, but if you get a little off and the Sony looks better. Since most of us don't have IBS and/or gimbals, I'm surprised the Sigmas are as popular as they are. Again, I get it for photography, but not so much for video, and I get it for the 16mm (the shorter the lens gets the less it matters), but again, for the 30mm I'm not so sure. If money was no object I'd probably get both and then see if I mostly carry one or if I can't do without one. I suspect that without constant side by side comparison I'd end up keeping the sony.

I have both with my sony a6300 (which doesn't have any IBIS). I originally bought the sigma because of the better image, but its close to useable due to it turning everything to jittering jelly (and thats with a Zhiyun Crane!). It can really only be used on a tripod without hands. Had to move to the sony due to its OSS for moving shots. Just had to sacrifice 5% image quality.

I was debating whether to get the sony 50mm 1.8 vs SIGMA 30 mm 1.4, and at the end of the day. I GOT THE 30 mm 1.4 for my a6400! its amazing! itsespecially for the price!!! Autofocus was still good on my camera. 50 mm 1.8 i feel like its too close... espeically for my crop sensor camera. Upgraded the firmware on the sigma lens... and manual focus is amazing!! For those aiming to buy a good lens under $350 and has a good aperture! In my situation and experiences, It served me well in low light and it has a nice creamy bokeh to it too. I personally use it for portaits and even landscape at times( although a wider angle lens is much preferable) I use this to VLOG sometimes!! HOWEVER those who are buying to buy this for a vlog type , I suggest going for the 16 mm f1.4! the 30 mm 1.4 is a bit too close! (45 mm on my a6400) but other than that! Im very impressed!!

LOL. I have been on the same path but didn't make a decision yet whether I should go for the a6500 or a6400. I really love the Sigma 30mm 1.4 and my worry is how it will perform in low light situations.
@emmanuelnguyen33615 жыл бұрын
@@DKRacketIt just really depends on you! If your on a strict budget... I would still consider the a6400 (although it has NO IBIS). I bought mine for $898(US DOLLARS) body only. Tbh the a6500 and a6400 are essentially the same. I used both, but my a6500 broke a few months ago. (fell off a cliff LOL) I'll tell you my exeperience from replacing my broken a6500 to the a6400. So basically imo the a6400 is like the "improved version" of a6500 hahaha A6400 perks over the a6500: *faster autofocus and more accurate than the a7 series for autofocus *uses the newer processor chip *still has the slog profiles as a6300 and a6500 *NO MORE LIMIT on the 30 min 4k recording. I can record till my battery dies XDD (a6300 and a6500 has a limit) *and no more screen dimming when i shoot in 4k(a6500 when u shoot in 4k, the screen dims... which annoyed me) and the sigma 30 mm 1.4 in my case and in my opinion had really great low light performance. Don't expect the lens to be night vision beast xDD but overall at 1.4 i was able to get some good photos without boosting up my ISO. For $330-$350, I would defo buy this lens. Overall both cameras are great. I do miss IBIS, but im happy I was able to replace my BROKEN a6500 with the a6400. HOWEVER if I still have my a6500, i would not buy the a6400. Its basically the same features, except Sony took the problems of the a6500 and solved it in the a6400 :) I hope this helps. and whatever camera you choose, they are both good!

Once that sharpness is lost, it's gone.

There's something you forgot to mention. I have an A6500 and bought 2 Sigma lenses (30 and 56) based on yours and others reviews. I've now discovered that when shooting in continuous focus mode in video the sigma lenses produce a very annoying scrambled "chirpy" digital sound which is picked up by the onboard mic. So much so that if you a shooting a quiet scene it pretty much ruins the footage. As soon as I switch to manual it disappears. I can only assume there is a compatibility issue between the Sigma lenses and Sony body that causes this sound. Wish i had known this before spending £700 on the sigma lenses. And BTW I'm not talking about the focus adjusting. It's like a constant scrambled sound as soon as AFC is enabled in video.

Haven’t experienced that. I’ll have to check that out myself. Thanks for bringing it up!

@@SidneyDiongzon Seriously I tried it 2 hours ago on both my 30 and 56. Set it to video and AFC and put your ear to the camera then playback some footage with earphones in. I'd be interested to know if you get the same because I'm about to sell my sigma lenses on ebay. I only bought them 1 week ago. This guy posted a similar problem: www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4200975 With a link to the issue: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rZ7Gkmulnsmce5I

I really like so much the sigma images but the OSS makes the difference. What do you think? Is it Worth to pay a little more "just" beacuse the stabilization? Thank for the great review!
@SidneyDiongzon6 жыл бұрын
Well, I personally would choose image quality over image stabilization.

I'm getting into vlogging with short cinematic clips here and there with the A6300. I was looking for a run and gun lens that can help be with both scenarios. Do you think a 30mm/35mm will give me a wide enough angle for vlogging? It'll definitely help me in video quality and cinematic sequences but I'm just not sure if it'll work out for vlogging.
@SidneyDiongzon7 жыл бұрын
It can, but you'll need to have a tripod like the Joby GorillaPod to extend the reach of the camera further than your arm....unless you have really long arms, lol. I'ma actually going to do a review on a new tripod I love for vlogging, so check out for that soon!

But what about when I get a full frame Sony? 🤔 I already have the 50mm f1.8 FE, but want something wider with nice bokeh...
@zuriel13g7 жыл бұрын
Which would you recommend for my a6300 shooting almost exclusively photos. I've mostly done street photography but have been exploring and trying new things. Going to the mountains, car shows, boudoir, night shots and everything in-between. But all I have is the kit lens and an old 50mm 1.7 I adapted from a Minolta film camera. I'm also looking for a more versatile telephoto lens but I think I'm getting a nice prime first.
@SidneyDiongzon7 жыл бұрын
+Zuriel Guillen Go with the Sigma 30mm 1.4 DC DN lens! It's semi-wide enough for street photography, but you can get great portrait shots when you're close to a subject. It's my favorite lens for the Sony a6000/a6300/a6500!

Seriously the best comparison video ever for these lenses, Thank you soo much what do you think about Sigma 30 1.4 vs Sigma18-35 1.8 with MC adapter for videos mostly and photos as well? I heard so much positive feedback about this lens
@SidneyDiongzon7 жыл бұрын
+Orex Bayn Thanks! Both Sigma lenses are phenomenal! But the the Sigma 18-35mm will give you better image quality because it's an Art lens. The one thing I like about the Sigma 30mm is that it's smaller and lighter, as it's a perfect pair with the Sony a6500. Hope this helps!

Great comparison! Curious if you think the 35mm with OSS is perhaps a better choice for someone with the a6300 (like me) since it has no in-body stabilization? I do shoot with a gimbal most of the time, but not always...

I am using Sony A6400 (no IBIS) but I have a weebill S gimbal, should i get the sony or the sigma lens? I mostly shoot travel videos and little bit of photography. The Sony is little bit cheaper by 30$ here in Singapore.
@Triple0700075 жыл бұрын
To me the Sigma image looks a little more casual-user oriented: Like GoPro footage, it's "pre-graded" a little brighter and more colorful, maybe a bit of sharpness too. But the Sony looks more like professional RAW footage. You could easily add the raised highlights and saturation and contrast later in post. The Sigma seems more likely to blow out bright areas too.

Hi, If I remember correctly(a few years ago now) the Sigma does not have OSS whereas the Sony has can you confirm this? How do you use the OSS on this Sigma lens? On another youtube review(in 2016) the reviewer prefers the Sony because of its focus accuracy on majority of the time whereas your review shows otherwise? From the above differences can we surmise Sigma has upgraded its lens to include OSS and improves its focus accuracy?
@SidneyDiongzon7 жыл бұрын
The Sony a6500 provides In-body image stabilization, so I'm able to use any lens to help stabilize my footage. This particular Sigma lens still does not have image stabilization. Hope this clarifies some things!

That OSS really reduces the micro jitters with IBIS on, it's still quite prominent on the Sigma. I've got really shaky hands so that's a tough decision, especially when I'm shooting handheld. Should be a breeze on a gimbal. I'm switching from a Nikon D750 to Sony so looking in to lenses to acquire along with the A6600.

did you find any autofocusing issues with the sigma? or was it simply a matter of it being slower than the sony? TIA
@SidneyDiongzon7 жыл бұрын
In video/movie mode, no autofocusing issues at all. It's like 1/4 second slower than the Sony. In photography mode, however, the Sigma does hunt a little bit especially in low light. Both lenses have their pros and cons, but I still find the Sigma 30mm to give the better results. Hope this helps!
