IMO the 35 F/1.8 OSS is the best all-around APS-C lens, especially for video shooters. Small, light, OSS, sharp, bokeh, fast aperture - equivalent to a a 52.5mm full frame and is a great companion to the 16-50 kit lens. Both those lens on a 5100, 6XXX can cover most your needs in a tiny package.

Very good comparison from a practical point of view. Both lenses are great. I own and have been using the Sigma for the last two years and it never disappointed me. I never felt the need for IS. Have gone down to 1/8 sec handheld and got sharp images. Call it hefty, bigger, or whatever but it is majestic to hold it mounted on my a6000. The Sony 35 was the first lens I bought for my 6000. I was blown away with the difference in the richness of colors I was getting from the 35 over my kit lens. I own the Sigma 16 and it is terrific but I do wish it had OSS. I also chose the Sony 18-105 Zoom over the Sigma 18-50 because of the OSS and the powered zoom, even though the Sigma was reviewed as being a sharper lens. A con was the size before buying, but upon recieving the lens, this is not a problem for me. I actually kind of like how it allows for a comfortable grip/stance and the weight feels very balanced with the camera. I also like the build quality as well. Great comparison, thanks! I just picked up an a6100 and will be getting a Sigma 16mm 1.4 in the mail today. I think I also need that 56mm in my life, just look at that big beatiful piece of glass! When you’re shooting with aps-c I think it makes sense to pick the lenses that lets in the most light, to get as close as possible to FF performance (low-light, bokeh, lower shutter speeds). The fact that the Sigma arguably has better colour reproduction, is sharper AND cheaper makes it ideal for stills, and video if your using a gimbal or tripod.

Really handy review, expecially 3 years on and in the EU we have both lenses at the same price. I still think the Sigma might win out though, plus the slight extra wideness in 30 vs. 35 might be better in relatively tight/cramped indoor shooting conditions (also where low light might be a better bet). Still undecided, lens window shopping is fun!

The Sigma appears to be a bit sharper and would be a great walk-around lens. Since I already have the Sigma 16mm, it would make sense to get the 30mm and I shoot mainly landscape, cityscape. Could be focus breathing. Try manual focus for a shot or two and see if you see the same results. Sometimes using auto focus - depending on what’s in the shot - the lens can focus in and out and have trouble focusing. If it’s not that then maybe it is OSS. If you have the kit lens, it has OSS. Try to shoot the same shot with the kit lens and compare results.

Is the aperture difference between these two lenses super noticeable? And if it is, do you think it’s worth investing on the Sony lense for its OSS and sacrifice the wider aperture Sigma offers? @@south.constellation hey there! Thanks for checking out my videos. There is not a ton of difference between f1.4 and f1.8 at this focal length. The OSS would help a little bit but it’s not worlds different - plus you could use some stabilization in editing software. Id put more emphasis on technique holding the camera over relying on the OSS in this case. Later on if you do more films and get a bit more serious, in camera stabilization will help a lot. For now, I’d shoot scenes a little wider, and take into consideration using stabilization in the editing. Shoot from test shots and see what I mean, bc editing programs will crop in a bit to stabilize / smooth the footage.

I am on the fence on the sigma lenses. Should I go with the 16mm f1.4 or the 70-300. I'm seriously considering the latter for astro and lower price but the 16mm looks better for all around.
@kyletaggart4 жыл бұрын
I had the 70-300 for a short time, but I couldn't do a review. Wish I did. I would say personally, I get much more use from the sigma. I also use the sigma whenever you see my astro shots on the gram, and I love it. I do want to test manual lenses for astro, but the sigma 16mm is incredible all around. You could easily get the sigma 16mm, and if you're not happy with it, sell it for no loss, then go with the sony zoom next.

@@kyletaggart that's great to know. Is the focus ring on the 16mm very loud when shooting video? I've heard some complaints about it. BTW I appreciate all your replies and understand if you don't reply. I created one video last year and it has over 20k views. I try to respond to every question but wow! can it be overwhelming!

Interesting video, I am looking at these 2 lenses. but I already own a 56mm Sigma 1.4 lens. If I would shoot for the same video with multiple lenses does it make more sense to stay in the sigma range? or isn't it really noticable after color correction from which lens the shots where made? (Beginner here)
@dangerousmethod_337 ай бұрын
Yes, the colors look different the Sony is more close to cold colors and the sigma it is slightly warmer. You could shoot in log and then put all the same color in post or you could stay in the Sigma ecosystem. So is your call, if you dont like to color correct your footage after filming go for the Sigma, in my opinion the Sony is a better deal. Why?, because sometimes you see your photos and videos slightly out of focus with the Sigma. The AF of the Sony is Right 90% of the time, the Sigma I'll say its about 70%. Also de AF in the Sony is faster. Anyway both of this lenses are great and you could not go wrong with either.

Hi @hikyletaggart! Awesome review! I'm currently considering these as the upgrade to the kit lens :) I knew you recommended the Sigma when upgrading the kit & on budget, but somehow in ecommerce sites on my country, I can find the Sony 35mm $15 ~ $40 cheaper. @kyletaggart4 жыл бұрын
The sigma 35 art is a full frame lens, much heavier, and pricer and not necessarily designed for the a6k line. It would definitely work, but I’d stick with the APS-C version, the contemporary model. One of these days I’m gonna have to throw on a full frame lens and do a video on it. Also thanks for checking this out!

Hello, thanks for your video, I have some questions, I would like you to help me, I have the sigma 30mm 1.4 but when doing autofocus it makes a bit of noise, I can even feel the vibration in the hands of the lens focusing, is it normal? Or should I take it to warranty?
@kyletaggart Жыл бұрын
Hard to tell from your comment. Sigma lenses are w little louder than Sony. But lenses nowadays are much quieter than they used to be. It wouldn’t hurt to have it checked, but it might be working as normal.

Amateur photographer here. I am thinking of getting a Sony alpha 6700 and I wanted to ask you if with the E 35mm f 1.8 OSS would be a good fit for night video shooting. I have an iPhone 15 but I want to upgrade with my night footage. Do you have any other recommendations? Thanks in advance
@kyletaggart6 ай бұрын
Not a bad combo for night shooting. Mobile vs dedicated camera have different capabilities. More advanced cameras can shoot RAW vs some phones not being able to do so. So cameras you can color grade / edit, and retain more details. But the whole process is reliant on having the skill to do so. An iPhone, can achieve nice video quality, day or night, and it’s relatively user friendly and doesn’t require a ton of skill. So it’s really about what you want to achieve. The 6700 is the latest and great Sony APSC camera, and had great video specs. I’d compare it to what the iPhone 15 can do, and what matters to you. 4K? 6k? RAW/Log shooting, etc.

@@kyletaggart I just want a significant upgrade with the low light video/photos that I get from the iPhone 15 . great comparison i’ve watched this video before and after tons of research, I’d go with the sony. The sigma was reported to be prone to molds and fungus and it’s definitely true. @kyletaggart2 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, some people prefer to zoom with a zoom lens, rather than moving their feet! 30mm is a fixed focal length, so that’s up to you. It is a versatile focal length though, and f1.4 gives you low light flexibility for sure. I think it’s a great starter lens as maybe your first prime lens (if it is). It’s a great lens for the money no doubt. The Viltrox 33mm is also f1.4, and I think sometimes cheaper. Both are great options for their cost.
