I was looking at a boat that was 5 years old and it only had 13 hours. I asked the dealer and they said it hadn't been used much and so the people sold it back to them. But the prop told a different story. Thanks for the tips. I just wish people would be more honest!

Thank you SO much for such great information. I had no idea what engine hrs meant. Much appreciated
@wolfe1978nm4 жыл бұрын
Check compression. Takes a $20 tool and a wrench. If compression is good, engine is clean and everything works then there is not much you can guess at. You can try to go by hours, but unless they are excessive you have no idea if the boat spent those hours at full throttle blasting along never getting an oil change, or simply cruising at 1500 rpm with oil changes 3 times a year. Buying a used boat with no warranty is a risk. I can blow out an engine in 100 hours, or make the same engine last 3,000+ hours.

I'm not sure 100 hrs = 4000km 'car miles' is high enough. By that logic, your 2000 hours before rebuild would mean you expect a car to only go 80k before needing a rebuild. My personal opinion is that 100 hours is closer to 8000 kilometers. This matches modern car engine oil change intervals and would put the engine at 160k 'car kilometers' (100k miles) for a rebuild. That seems to add up a more more accurately to me.
@MountainFisher4 жыл бұрын
Would you consider buying a car that had let's say 50,000 miles on it, but it pulled a trailer all the time in the mountains? Remember a marine engine never goes downhill it's always uphill under load. It is why I bought a boat with a diesel engine in it.
@yoster774 жыл бұрын
@@MountainFisher That's irrelevant to the point I think. He is comparing hours to miles for the point of a comparison metric to the every-day guy or gal. That's why his hour estimation (2000) for a rebuild is so low - that would be VERY low hours for a car, but to your point a marine engine is always working, so from an hours perspective, they don't last as long. So what he's trying to do here then, is compare hours to miles, so people can think in every-day terms, how many is too many. I would argue that 100k miles (160k) kilometers is more accurate 'rebuild' territory for a vehicle used in high-load conditions. Also consider that the average marine engine spends over 50% of its hours at idle-rpm speed. But hey there is no such thing has hours-to-miles so this is all just opinion anyway :)

Hi there, you failed to differ the engine hour on a two stroke, 4 stroke gas engine, versus a diesel engine, can you comment on this? Tks!
@boatinglessons3 жыл бұрын
I don’t have enough real data on 2 vs. 4 stroke for engine longevity. The two stroke is more prone to early failure because of it’s lack of precision control systems (IMO). Diesels can run for 1000s more hours than gas for sure because of how heavily built they are and lower RPM they run

That's a great question. A boat is worth heaps when it's new, and nothing when it's used. May as well use it to it stops chooching. Hours per year is what's important. You hit the snail on the sled. Low use is mechanical abuse.

Just like a car, too many hours per year, or too few hours per year spell "Bend Over And Take it" or "Bring Out Another Thousand or way more" BOAT for short. An informed buyer knows that balance. Statistics Just in indicate that 0.5 percent of 1 percent of boat buyers appreciate how it works. Yet 2 percent of 5 percent of car buyers get the idea. Under use over time is actually worse!
