This was the most helpful thing I heard when I was getting more serious in the hobby. I had a friend who is a full-time pro, and I bought some lessons from him (which turned into some paying side work for me). I had a t3i, and I wanted to upgrade to full frame - he asked me a question that stuck with me. He asked, "do you think you've reached the max potential of your current camera?" I had to think about it and realize that - yeah, I could grow a lot and there was a lot to my little rebel that I hadn't mastered yet. Like three years later, I finally felt confident (and had the money) that I had outgrown my camera and could upgrade. I think it did wonders for my photography to have to think through things creatively to overcome my kit's shortcomings. People need to realize that you don't need to be on the bleeding edge to get good photos also that shiny new lens or body you want will be outclassed in a few years OR it will be available for much less money used.

Let me save you 10 minutes Canon 24mm f1.4 Too similar to 35mm. Can get most shots with the 35mm anyway which is her favorite lens. Also too much distortion when getting closer portraits compared to longer focal lengths. Samyang 24mm t-s f3.5 Takes too long to set up to get a shot so it is rarely used with the limited shooting times and constantly changing nature of weddings. The lack of autofocus adds another element of required preparation. Also all the cons of the 24mm mentioned above 😂😂

I hate to be pedantic, but it seems to me that you are not using the 24mm lens in a way that maximizes its utility. People often presume incorrectly that the purpose of wide angle lenses is to "fit more in", hence your comments that you could have achieved the same images by taking a step back with your 35mm lens. However, the strength of a wide angle lens is, somewhat counterintuitively, that it allows the photographer to fit more in while getting closer. This is an important distinction, and could make a big difference at a wedding when shooting objects or people close up and still bringing in a lot of the surroundings. The inevitable distortion with wide angle lenses is sometimes unwelcome, but I've also found it quite interesting and fun when not overdone. For that reason I wish I never sold my Sigma 12-24 super duper wide angle lens, which yielded one of my all-time best portfolio shots.

The bokeh on the 24mm is different than 35mm, as well. It's just personal preference in the look, and she's not wrong in her reasoning. I'd rather use a 35mm and step back.

What I noticed was that when I take photos and step back, the tables and stuff which were next to me get in the photos. While that wouldn't be an issue with a 24mm lens as I could shoot what is in front of me,without steping back and going next to the tables behind me and ending up having them in the shot.

24mm or lower gives you that dramatic look if you shoot from low (on your knee) to high angles, thats a nice way to use it, thats what I do when shooting at 24 most of the times, or the occasions you mentioned.

For out of focus areas above and below your subject use a cheap UV filter with clear nail polish on it. Usually a oval pattern works. Experiment with this, it's cheap and lightweight. I assume your 35mm is for full frame. If so, good choice. That is the most versatile focal length for wedding work although I do remember doing every wedding with a 80mm Hasselblad 6x6 in the film days and it always worked and rendered beautifully.

One of my absolute favorite lenses is 24-105mm. I HATE that it only goes to 4.0 but the versatility is amazing... I can go wide or I can zoom in a little. That being said though I always carry a 50mm also so I can get some variety (and change of wider f stop) -- FOR WEDDINGS

Michelle Cox Photography Inlike my 24-70 f/4 also. Wider aperture would have been great, yeah... but IS, some versatility and especially the very usable macro mode make this lens great. I somehow wish to not have bought a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II USM, very expensive and heavy. Great image quality but also very hefty and is sparking attention everywhere. Sometimes I feel like a moron carrying it around the whole day so I most of the time leave it at home :(. 35 f/2 IS is also a marble ;).

Dear Julia! Just to add on to yout focal length learnings (35 preference as opposed to 24), your preference is appreciated, however especially the comperative sample shots you were showing, I did like the 24mm versions much better than the 35mm counterparts. The Sigma focusing reliability issues I cannot comment beyond tht such shit does happen with DSLR lenses and requires servicing or even replacement of the otherwise premium quality glass. The TS lenses are typically for architecture purposes where subjects are stationary and allows enough time for setting up all the knobs, hence your use case a bit of a stretch that this gear is not really designed for. The only lens I regret buying is the Voigtlander 10mm f5.6 lens. Although it provides pretty unique perspectives, but I find its versatility super limited and although it is tiny and light I leave it mostly at home when going for a shoot.

Thanks for your review. It’s really made me think about what my lenses are most suitable for. I have a 24mm and found I really tend to use it for landscape. I also have the samyang 12mm. I love my ultra wide angle lens and thought I’d use it for landscape, but I hardly ever use it so maybe it’s better for architecture and cityscapes. I love my 50 mm jupiter 8 for portraits.

The 24 mm lens has a totally different effect than the 35 mm than just focal length. The dimensions are different the compressions are different. The distortion is different. You can sell the lenses that you don't like and fine ones that you like. You can usually return them after 30 days.

I have the Sigma Art 35mm and 24mm lenses. Yes the 35mm is better suited for portraits, however, I like the noticeable wider angle of the 24 a lot and still having the ability to blur out the background. Especially inside locations often don't allow the couple of steps back and then a 35mm can get tight - even too tight and I'd miss a great shot. I think 24 and 35 is not a good combo when shooting with two bodies in parallel. I always travel with two full frame bodies and typically have 24/50 or 35/85 mounted.

I can't recall the last time I saw a wedding photographer using fixed focal lengths. The most common setup I see is the 70-200 f/2.8 and the 16-35 f/2.8. I could see doing the portraits with fixed focal lengths, but during the action before, during, and after the actual wedding I couldn't imagine someone using fixed focal lengths.

Canon 50 1.4. I used it for many years when it was the only lens I had but like Daniel said, it has so much CA and it misses focus. I use my Canon 35mm 1.4 heavily but my most used lens is Canon 135mm f/2 just because I love how it totally blurs out the background. I just recently purchased Canon 24mm f/2.8 IS because of wanted to start vlogging and hand holding the 35mm was just too close to my face. It got it on eBay for $300 so it isn't a total wash if I don't use it as much.

It is funny, for me it is the other way around, I am fascinated with my 24mm (the Canon version) and I have always had the doubt if I add the 35mm and I have not done it yet, thinking that it would have a too similar result. I am very tempted with the new Tamron 35-150, sometimes I need to go out with a single lens that does everything and I have seen good results with that new zoom that is fed up brighter than the average. Get a 24-70mm f2.8 and a 85mm f1.8. If you are shooting wide to fit more than 3 people, you don't need the shadow depth of field of f1.4. For couple portraits use the 85mm for bokeh. With this set up, even if you need wide shots with shallow depth of field use the brenizer method which is using the 85mm take multiple shots and stich them together on lightroom and you get Wide angle with shallow depth of field.

The Sigma 35 F1.4 (for Canon) always had mis focus issue for me. I really liked to colour the lens produced but could not trust shooting with it at anything lower then F2.8. I did buy the dock to update the software and tune the lens. The end results was I noticed that the lens was not focusing to the same distance (static subject on tripod) when I shifted the focus ring all the way to the left of right. So possible something with the accuracy of the focusing mechanism motors. After that I stuck with the Canon L lens and did not buy 3rd party lens.

I think one of the reasons you dislike the two 24mm is because you already have a different prime that is EXTREMELY close to the 24mm that you already loved and adored. That's the main reason why people say don't get two prime lenses that are so close in focal length, to avoid the issue of "oh, if I just use this one lens, I can get the same shot if I move just slightly."

I think you might like a longer tilt lens- They are heavy and pricy, but the effect is more dramatic at longer focal lengths. My lens regret fortunately wasn't too costly- The Nikon 85mm 1.8D. My first lens for my Sony was the 35 1.4. It is a great all around lens. I got rid of it in favor of the 16 to 35 2.8. I do more landscape and I still have that 35 that I love so much. Depending on what result one is after, any focal length could be used for portrait. This is just my opinion though.

We all learn the hard way. For some reason all wedding photographers, me included, have bought lenses for one or two photos. Yes, we get top-notch photos but is worth carrying all the extra weight on the wedding day?

It's a shame because I love the pictures from the TS too - but yeah, when I used to bring it with me in my camera bag I just never seemed to reach for it because I never had enough time at a portrait session, etc :(

Long Story short: Only buy 24mm if you plan on shooting video or taking pics of landscapes. Otherwise it'll stretch out whatever is right in front of the lens. AKA that one pic of the IG model you see sometimes where their face looks more round than usual.

The tilt shift lens is better used with a tripod. These lenses are not out of style and they are one of the lenses that I may want to try for landscape photography. The tilt shift lens was designed for correcting the composition on how you are pointing the lens up at a high rise building. Focal plane of the shot would look like it was shot with a regular prime lens with the shift lens when you are pointing the camera up as if you were pointing it straightforward at the subject. So this lens was made for limited amount of compositions. Some of your early photos shown lack some contrast because it has some type of overcast that takes away the contrast. Peace, Flood!

I have the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 that I love! I shoot with a Sony a6000 after selling my Canon 7D. I also have a Canon FD 50mm f/1.8 with an adapter. Next lens I want to get is the Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8, that should give me a nice range with those 2 Sigma lenses.

(Question)I have the Canon 24mm 1.4 L and it looked great on crop sensor (80D) but I upgraded to a 1DX ii and all of the sudden I’m running into the same problems you’re talking about. It’s almost too wide now and definitely isn’t really suitable for people at all. I’m thinking about getting the 35mm 1.4 L ii to replace it since people will still look “good”. Do you think the 35mm is still wide enough to achieve epic wide shots (open fields, mountain backgrounds etc) with people as subjects or is it not wide enough?

Great video! Instead of the 24mm, have you thought of a 28mm? Nikon has one but not sure if Canon does. 28mm is so nice in my opinion, not too too wide and not too narrow.

The 28mm might work better, but the question of whether it is worth carrying the 28mm and the 35mm still remains. Especially bearing in mind that the two lenses are very close to each other in focal range and the 35mm can do most of what the 28mm can.

I would still have the problem that it's too similar to a 35mm and I don't see the point in carrying an extra lens adding weight to my bag when I could just use the 35mm :)

Woowww, that’s crazy she doesnt like 24mm. That’s my favorite and most used lens I have. Granted, Im a filmmaker, but the 24mm makes vintage, hipster style portraits. I love that about them. And if I need the emphasis, switch to the 50mm.

You can try to send the Sigma and your camera to Sigma and let them fix the focusing issue by tailoring the lens' focus to your camera. I did this with my Tamron 70-200 and D750. Since then, the focus is always spot on. But as a fulltime photographer I understand that it is probably nearly impossible for you to send in your camera.

One of the lenses I regret getting is the Canon 40mm f/2.8 pancake lens. I got it cause it was so compact and light and inexpensive. But I found I never used it, especially when I already have the 50mm f/1.4. I ended up selling it on eBay awhile back.

I bought 24mm TS-E and sold it after 5 years. Never get used so much. Too long to setup. This lens is one trick pony. Now I use 24mm f1.4, its much more versatile and but still not get used so much compared to my 35mm and 50mm. Even 200mm get more use than 24mm. But I still keep 24mm 1.4 for bride prep when the room is small and dark. Its specialty lens, it needed when every lens can't do the job right

I feel you! My 135mm gets more use than my 24mm at weddings - during the ceremony and speeches specifically. Depending on what venue I am shooting at, I might consider still bringing my 24mm with me if I know the location is tight on the space. But otherwise.. I'll just continue using it for my videos instead so at least it's still getting used somehow!

I have a 24mm f/1.8 I never use, 2 - 70 to 200mm f/4-5.6 lenses, 2 28-55mm kit type lenses, 1 70-300mm quantaray. Bunch of lenses I bought when I was starting out, that just aren't what I need today. Really, the 24mm is about useless unless you turn it around with a lens reverse adaptor and use it for macro work...then its great. Also, instead of the 35 mm lens I use an 30mm f1.8 which is a little wider but close enough to get the job done...

I use 30 to 40% the 35mm 1.4, 20 to 30% the 50mm 1.4, 15 to 25% the 24mm 1.4 and finally 10 to 20% the 85mm 1.8 and I'm very happy and I find that I don't need any more lenses, perhaps the 24-70 2.8.

I can see your point about the straight 24 maybe, especially the extra fast (expensive) f/1.4. But the tilty -- ooh, there is much potential. I think you just need to work it a little more, plan some shots based around the perspective shift and you will get some good ones. Not seeing a church fall away in pictures really adds impact. Think of it as taking a pic of the architecture and there happens to be a wedding taking place. But . . . I don't do weddings. You can have them all.

I think the 24mm is more geared towards video. You can move closer to your camera while getting a blurry background. So yeah it depends on what you do.
