"When I Need You" is a popular song written by Albert Hammond and Carole Bayer Sager. Its first appearance was as the title track of Hammond's 1976 album When I Need You. Leo Sayer's version, produced by Richard Perry, was a massive hit worldwide, reaching number 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in February 1977 after three of his earlier singles had stalled at number 2. It also reached number 1 on both the Billboard Hot 100 for a single week in May 1977.

Wonderful performance Leo. I am an American, 50 years ago, I met a beautiful English girl, my college sweetheart in England while studying to be a doctor. I invited her to a concert by Leo Sayer and this was one of the songs that we loved; we played the cassette, the record, the CD and … for the 50 years we’ve been married, after working and travelling in 6 countries and 3 continents, now living in America with children and grandchildren this song graced our lives. This song reminds me of that wonderful day in Northern England when I met my wife of half a century. I hope everyone enjoys this beautiful song and succeeds in love and life.

In 1981 my sister and her boyfriend were taken from us by a drunk driver; I was 10 years old at the time. This song was played at their memorial. First time I ever saw my father cry...he cried uncontrollably and collapsed....one of the most profound and terrifying times in my life. That one person's terrible decision to drink and drive forever changed our families. I'm 52 now and when I hear this song, I can remember every moment from the late night telephone call to the wake.

Casket, headstone and other things. I know they are still doing this because my step mother in law passed due to COVID in December 2023 and the paperwork was processed and the check was received. I remember lying on my bedroom floor, playing my 45 over and over, sobbing over the boy I loved. ( He never knew it ) but boy did it feel great to just wallow in my teen emotions back then. This song takes me right back to those endless summer days, the magic of hope, the waiting and longing. What an amazing time the late 70s and the 80s had. Never to be replicated.

Leo Sayer When I need you I just close my eyes and I'm with you And all that I so wanna give you It's only a heartbeat away When I need love I hold out my hands and I touch love I never knew there was so much love Keeping me warm night and day Miles and miles of empty space in between us A telephone can't take the place of your smile But you know I won't be traveling forever It's cold out, but hold out And do like I do When I need you I just close my eyes and I'm with you And all that I so wanna give you, babe It's only a heartbeat away It's not easy when the road is your driver Honey, that's a heavy load that we bear But you know I won't be traveling a lifetime It's cold out, but hold out And do like I do Oh, I need you When I need love I hold out my hands and I touch love I never knew there was so much love Keeping me warm night and day When I need you I just close my eyes And you're right here by my side Keeping my warm night and day I just hold out my hands I just hold out my hands And I'm with you, darling Yes, I'm with you, darling All I wanna give you It's only a heartbeat away Oh, I need you, darling Oh, I want you Compositor: Sager Carole, Hammond Albert Louis

There was no email, no 24 hour rolling news, no social media, no self driving cars and no fucking identity politics. I could go days without knowing what was happening beyond the boundary of our street. Look, I’m not advocating against progress, however I do think the Luddites were on to something. Simpler times when the things we worried about were the things that were in the sphere of our influence. Leo, and this song in particular are both a fond memory of a simpler, happier time. Fortunately I haven’t much longer to worry about it but thank you to all kind souls who I have met along the way ♥️

My private English teacher showed me this song as a pedagogical pop song. There were comments in English for the tape. He was an old gentleman whom I loved as if he were my grandfather. He died when I was 18, I wrote a poem about him. This song always reminds me of his lessons, the loads of cacti he collected, the old fashioned furniture and his kindness. He was a polihistor, he taught me not only English but to live my life honestly and always try my best.

"To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before" : for me it is his iconic song. But some people think his best performance is his cover of this Leo Sayer's song in 1990s. As for "The Air That I Breathe", I thought he ever sang duet with Albert West, but I couldn't find the duo version, only his single. With Albert West, I only find "Give A Little Love" which I also know, because it was also in my cassette I had in mid 1980s.

This song brings tears to my eyes. My partner is overseas working and I miss him so much. I listen to this song and think of him. He will be home any day now.

What a beautiful ballad. I remember it so well. Massive in 1977. My favourite of Leo Sayer's work.

When I lost my husband a year back... The only song which I could think of was THIS SONG.. I always listen at night in the stillness and kept crying the words so touchy .. Thank you for this beautiful song.

I'm glad I found this gem. I was born in 91. This song makes me think of not only the lovers I have been with but also my family and my daughter. So many emotions. ❤️
