I feel like the whole point of a 5 is not having to detune to play these songs?

Yes and no! While that is true, a lot of songs become really difficult in standard tuning. Especially the ones with a lot of open string notes. However, I choose to play these songs with just 4 strings (on a 5-string) to make it accurate. Most bassists don't own a 5-string bass so it would be a stupid move to tab it out for a 5 string bass
