@@LeoGibsonGtr thanks for the reply, few questions as it wasn't stated in the video: Did you re-amp your riff? I.e played the riff raw then used it on the amp and Kemper/tonex? As I see there is some difference between each track. This will reduce the confounding variable (feel, picking strength and what not) Then, we can use it on several different amps and even tweak the knobs to find the optimum (global minima) And if we do that with enough sample size we can reach enough power to declare statistical significance.

General rule of thumb in life, things that are most popular, almost always are not the best. And since you like science so much, this is very logical. The average is by default what the most people think is good, as such it is by default "the average" . Someone that excels in something is rare, as such this group is more rare, as such people understanding why A is better than B is also a much smaller group, as such the best stuff is almost always what the smaller group endorses, and almost never what the biggest group endorses
@juanvaldez54224 ай бұрын
@@xdarrenxI have tried all the top modelers and I prefer Kemper . It’s the only one (fractal maybe too? ) that not only sounds good but REACTS like an amp in a dynamic way . The harder you hit it .. or not .. the harder it hits the ‘amp’ much like a tube amp which is the only thing that makes tubes preferable anyway imo

@@LeoGibsonGtr You are welcome. One question : you mention in the video that the profiles made with ToneX software via your studio grade mic/pre-amp/interface are better than those made via the ToneX pedal. So, can you make profiles with your mic/pre-amp/interface in the software ersion of ToneX and then transfer these to the pedal, and, if so, do they retain any/all of the superior fidelity? Thanks.
@LeoGibsonGtr8 ай бұрын
Hi, yes of course, my profiles are done using my professional grade gear and then transferred to the ToneX. But when you use the profiles in your DAW, you send the DI tracks directly to the plugin which provides you directly with the amp tone you need....without any A D A conversion. On the other hand, when you use the ToneX, you are for instance performing some A D A conversion....your guitar signal is going through some resistors and capacitors...therefore some sort of "degradation" is to be expected... in my opinion. Thank you!

Thanks for the great video, Leo! Your data and audio samples confirm what I heard when I had both a Kemper and my Tonex. I always thought the Kemper profiles lacked bite and bottom end. The Kemper always had a mid-range bias that was very annoying to me. I found that Tonex captures really had the bite and bottom end (and therefore no mid-range bias) that was missing on the Kemper. I will say that the EQ on the Tonex is its major weakness to me. There are no LPF or HPF available. Not only did the Kemper have global HPF and LPF, but the tilt or definition control made tailoring a guitar to the Kemper easy. IK Multimedia, please put a global tilt EQ and HPF, LPF in the Tonex!

Also, having a dedicated graphics card that has tensor cores or cuda cores (to a lesser extent) dramatically speeds up the advanced profiling process. I bought a cheap, dated gpu and it brought my advanced profiling times from 2 plus hours to less than one hour. Great video and totally thorough as usual. The biggest reason for a Kemper for me (and why I still use mine all the time) is when paired with Kemper Kones. I have both Kemper + 2x12 Kones and also Tonex + 2x12 Celestion F12-X200 (frfr) -- the Kemper really feels like an amp in the room, the Tonex, even when I EQ the hell out of it, is always sub-par. Maybe you should do some amp in the room comparisons. Can't touch the kemper in the room, which is why you see all the PRO's using them live. Not sure how the Tonemaster with it's dedicated Fender FR speakers holds up.

First of all, BLESS you for doing this; it's a lot of work and much appreciated. I have the Tonex and gigged in combo with the HX Stomp, which covers all territory, but I've also done it with analog pedals before and after, and it's a CHAMP! My only gripe with the Tonex is the inability to tweak the gain on the gigs, but I can accomplish it with the OD patches on the HX Stomp. You can now find a used Tonex in the low $ 300s vs. the FULL price of the Kemper, so it's not close in terms of the value of the Tonex.

A great review and comparison Leo! Great job, really! What I would like to mention is, the "only" 2 FXs of the the Kemper in front and after the Amp/Cab. We should not forget, that there is a huge majority of people out there, who really don't need much more. On the other hand the ToneX offers more or less nothing in terms of FXs so you have to use (if you own) or buy additionally gear. For me the Kemper Player is a nice addition to my Kemper Stage just for those small gigs, where I just need the KP and a FRFR. But that's just my opinion - everyone another taste ;) Ciao!

Wow. This is an amazing video. I love it! I must admit that is a very difficult task to achieve, because you need to sync both signal with all the inconvenience that this could have (latency between both signal mostly, noise when mic the real amp maybe). All this comes in a error in the final value that dont let to be a perfect test (like all in real life). My doubt is: the amp, tonex and kemper obtain the same output every time get the same input?? If the answer is yes, we can expect to obtain the same result every time. Do you use the same guitar input for every test ir order to obtain the less error prone result?? That could be the best way to do this. Anyway, this is an amazing video. Thank you so much for your work!! Edit note: Great song!!!!

I have used a Tonex since its release and have to say it sounds far more accurate than anything else on the market. I profiled all my Vintage amps in a day and downloaded the best of what I would physically buy if I could afford them. I use a zoom G1four for my delay and chorus. £480 total for my ampless setup. Probably sounds the best out front ever. Great test and glad that the cheaper unit won the tone battle 🙂

I still think Nam is more accurate but it still doesn't have a hardware device readily available yet to play it live so I'm using tone x in the mean time until that day comes and I'm hoping when/if it does get that the device can load multiple plugins and instances of nam in unison with stuff like helix native and the two notes wall of sound plugins. If that day comes then I'll be able to sell my tone x and hx fx combo.

Great video Leo. Loved the demo song as always. I'd have to agree with you that the Tone X, with all its features is a more compelling buy than the Kemper Player at this time. I don't have any need to profile my own amps, so that missing feature from the Kemper isn't a deal breaker for me. God bless and rock on 🎸😎👍

Very good comparison, both units sound so close to the original it doesn't matter which one you go for. The only decision you have to make is whether you want your amp replacement made in Italy or Germany, haha.

I was member of the Kemper forum once when I had one. And I sometimes mentioned that it lacks a bit of lower mids (this video proves!), a few people confirmed. But in general the fanatism of Kemper fanboys is crazy, they just would not accept ANY evidence that the 11 year old technology has any flaws... And they are discussing this exact video right now... Kemper is good, but there's obviously better alternatives out there because technology has improved. I will laugh at them when Kemper 2 arrives with improved tone accuracy.

Hi, thank you for sharing! Yes, sometimes we are so "in love" with a device that we can not see any defect or possibility to improve. My goal is to try to provide some facts and numbers, and therefore to help finding ways to improve. Thank you!

@@LeoGibsonGtr I have now subscribed and watched many of your videos. You are a very honest and genuine KZbinr and your information is a great help for a beginner/intermediate like myself to better understand some of these subjects. It appears to me that IK blurr the line a little between TONEX and AmpliTube with their mac/iOS software. I would be very interested if you did a more recent video on AmpliTube vs TONEX, how they can work together (and how they are different), and if AmpliTube can now be used with this TONEX pedal as a standalone solution.
@malburn15948 ай бұрын
Thank you, a very interesting comparison! Give it another few years and I reckon you'll be comparing devices, that take many multiples of profiles of an amps settings, a bit like todays snapshot, vs a movie. It's amazing what we have access to now and it will continue to evolve. I wonder if a time will come when the difference between a real amp and model will be indistinguishable, even with scientific tests.

The only thing I would add that with the Tonex, you have to buy the Tonex capture box in order to capture your amps it’s $249.00 when you add that to the pedal it’s $649 at Sweetwater not too many people mention this
@cantstopplayingmusic8 ай бұрын
Very true, and I would mention if you already have a capable audio interface you can skip the Tonex capture box.

Brilliant video. I love my Kemper Stage, and have just bought the Tonex to try it, but will possibly buy the Player as well to try, not least as the profiles and FX make it a single gigging solution. Silly neither has an FX loop, would love to have added my HX Effects with the Tonex in 4CM. As an aside, I also have a Blackstar Amped 2 and BluGuitar Mercury and am not getting on with either particularly well, hence the Tonex purchase…..

Sound is very similar. However I think that today this is not the question anymore. The main issue years before and today is how you feel when using real amps vs other things. Feel is the base of music.

Thank you Leo for your hard work and for graciously giving back to the guitar community. In the first music section example the original Lonestar seems to have more low end than both the profilers. In this same example the ToneX seems to have more low end than the Kemper but is brighter than both. I wouldn’t mind hearing this comparison at the exact same location in the track for all 3. I think this would be helpful.

Agree, tech part of the vid was not even really needed, you can hear which one is more accurate. I don't own either and even though the ToneX sounds just like the amp that Kemper sounded great and all those effects make it worth the extra cash imo.

Very similar results, amazing sound quality with both units. So the price point could make the ToneX look more interesting. But ease of operation and future-proof design may be strong arguments in favour of the Kemper.

Great review and comparison. As always you go more than the extra mile. I have Tonex but was always hoping that Kemper would go into a more streamlined device route. Now that they have, and following this comparison, I’m not feeling like I’m missing out staying with Tonex. The proposed Downloadable Content route that Kemper are taking with the Player makes the unit even less appealing, pay over £600 in U.K., then factor in DLC to access extra effects slots, unlock liquid profiling etc could mean that you are getting near to Kemper Stage prices? I think that IK being a PC/Mac software based Capturing system gives it a longer life for updates and improvements. I had an issue where I could not run advanced captures, an incompatibility between my graphics processor and Tonex. The IK team worked with me on resolving the issue over a few months, even sending me Beta patches of updated software to test. So for me they are a great Thanks for all you do in reviewing things for us and have a great 2024 👍
