Hi @@LeoGibsonGtr, was tone capture add to the ampero 2 stage in a software release?
@aaronsinger3 ай бұрын
I use Tonex with Amalgam captures mostly, which come in many tonal variations, so I never feel the need to tweak the extra IK tone controls. To do so would be contradictory to the verisimilitude, which is the whole point of these profilers. I take the capture as it is. Of course there is so much tonal control from the guitar itself, not to mention low cuts and other EQ moves at the console or in the mix. I came here hoping for validation for the Tonex, as I am loving it right now. I did get that validation, at least to my satisfaction. We all want the stuff we bought to be as good as we believe it is, lol. Leo Gibson, thank you very much for bringing objectivity to this arena.

For ToneX, I saw someone mention the following: you can look up the schematic of the actual amp and use component values to calculate the corner frequencies of the tone stack. In ToneX you can adjust these corner frequencies to match the original and that will get you closer to how the real amp behaves. Something worth a try!
@CharLessMajor7Music3 ай бұрын
Can i ask what those corner frequencies and how do you actually do it.. thanks
@rutger41313 ай бұрын
@@CharLessMajor7Music look up "Rob Robinette How The TMB Tone Stack Works" and download "Duncan Tone Stack Calculator" (TSC). Then look up the schematic of the amp you'r using and identify the tone stack, plug the resistor and capacitor values into the TSC and / or calculate them using the equation on Robinette's website. It probably won't be an exact match, but really close especially if you don't go to the extreme sides of the dial on the ToneX. Also, this assumes that the amp was captured with everything at noon and actually has a TMB tone stack.
@LeoGibsonGtr3 ай бұрын
Very interesting, thank you
@taylormesa3 ай бұрын
I’m interested in this also. Do you have a link or reference for where you saw this? Very interesting, thanks!
@rutger41313 ай бұрын
@@taylormesa It was a comment on another ToneX video, don't know which one but it makes sense. The biggest difference between a Fender and a Marshall is the component values and placement of the tone stack (Fender / Mesa: pre gain, Marshall: post gain). Under the advanced settings in ToneX you have basically a full parametric EQ that you can dial in to your liking. This is way more flexible than the traditional TMB tone stack and can get you most any sound you'd normally get from an EQ pedal. So another take on this could be to just start with a good capture and use your ears, instead of fuzzing over if it is really like the amp. Anyway, from the Marshallforum I got that the frequencies for a Marshall are approx: 50 Hz, 600 Hz, 3 kHz and 10 kHz (BMPT). Q around 1 should work well. These frequencies are not absolute, as the knobs on a real TMB tone stack are NOT independent. So changing the treble control actually affects the frequency of the mid and bass controls as well. Fun fact: to hear the 'pure' sound of your amp with as little influence of the tone stack as possible, set treble and bass really low (0 to 2) and the mids up to full (8 tot 10). The info on robrobinette.com really contains all that is to know about TMB tone stacks. Check it out, it's not that hard.

@picksalot12 ай бұрын
To my ears, the Kemper Profiler was the most accurate sounding. I preferred the ToneX sound, even over the real Amp. All the Profilers were very good, and any of them would be a good choice, as the differences in sound were insignificant, and could always be adjusted if necessary. I would be interested how the Profiles compare to NAM. Great job as always, Leo. You are a real credit to the guitar community for the thoroughness and unbiased way you test and compare gear. Love the comparison videos Leo! I would love to hear you compare one all clean and open sounding amp tone using these: 1. Friedman IR pedal with real tubes 2. The latest Fractal Audio amp model 3. ToneX pedal with amp capture from Amalgam Audio 4. Quad/Nano Cortex with the same Amalgam Audio amp capture 5. UA pedal with their amp model These five products are the leading ones for amp simulation in the pedal format. If you use the same IR in the test, I think it will become obvious which company's technology is the leading one. A clean Plexi or VOX AC30TB would make a good amp type for the test because the real amps are very dynamic with lots of complex harmonic overtones.

Nice in-depth look at these popular units. Ampero has certainly moved up the ranks! They all seemed to perform well as a whole. The performance vs value is what is important for most average players as not all of us have £1000's to spend! So the Tonex is still most accurate capture for the price point and the new updated firmware coming in November, giving delays and modulations makes it a few steps ahead of anything on the market at this time! The only negative I can see for it is the poor software, and not being able to separate the L and R output for CAB on and off. Amazon have had the Tonex on sale for £249.99 in the UK

I'm, glad I bought the TONEX, I was going to save up and get a kemper. but it didn't sound as real to me in some way and also the Ampero in the beginning of your video sounded not so well. The Nanocortex sounds buzzy? Maybe these are just EQ settings thats could be fixed with an EQ pedal in the chain. But they all did well and I think in a mix all of them stood up well. I know I am not displeased with the Tonex I have and now an update is coming out to give it effects it didn't have next month in November. I also like the fact I can have any amp captured to download to it. It makes it simple to find great tones for any guitar to work with. I just wish we had this technology back when I was 16. 39 years of playing guitar and I am loving all of this stuff. I mix it with real amps and cabinets and not trying to replace one from another. @@LeoGibsonGtr You would be surprised how many people would want that. If you remember, one of the biggest selling points of the Quad Cortex was that you will be able to load plugins and use them live. So in a way, capturing a plugin would achieve what Neural DSP has been trying to deliver for years. At least it would be an interesting experiment.

Hi Leo, if I'm being honest, the signal to noise ratio of the nano during the envelope test was even better thsn the real SLO, and during the null test, my ears told me the Ampero had the loudest bass response. I expected you to tell us the Ampero was in the -20s for sure on the LUFS. Are my ears THAT bad? Lol Thank you always for great detailed reviews. Dave

Wow!! I must admid I did not expect that! My initial assumption was that it would be the worst considering that the ampero is a "budget" device and the others more like "pro" gear. I own an ampero stage 2 and I made the informed decision to buy it knowing (thinking!?) it was not the best but that relative to its pricing would be the "good enough" choice to accomodate my needs. Now, just the fact that it is adding profiling for free, I would have been happy to hear that the profiling is decent even if it would have been the worst of the 4 devices, but seeing that it is up there with the big boys is quite a happy surprise. I get the impression that if we sum up the functionalities of the device as of today, the ampero seems to be the best overall device now. Is that possible?

@LeoGibsonGtr2 ай бұрын
You are welcome! Well...interesting question...I guess it is cut off from the real profile, as the neural network should aligned the original signal to the capture one, therefore removing the "latency". If the latency was included...the original signal and the capture one would be OUT of phase...and therefore the profile would be wrong. Thank you
