Didn't start to use my Tone X yet but already properly informed thanks to your channel... One of the first thing I've to do now is to create my own "Custom DI" with all my guitare and me playing my songs. And take a look at your PDF. Thank you. :)

Thanks Jason. I tried following in Tonex Software: I put a 0.0dB Custom Di File from you in the player. I take a similar guitar and let the Input Gain of my Interface at the left position = zero ( Motu M4, has a max Input Gain of 16dBu) . Then I preamp the signal to +16dB via a software preamp or the input gain control of the Interface before tonex and now I will get a similar tone with my guitar as when playing the custom DI file. I don't know if this can be explained logically but it works for me

Jason your videos are great! Could you make a video using the Tonex One as a clean Amp and Cab and the Tonex Pedal as overdrive pedals? I'm trying to create this setup but I'm having difficulties especially in relation to the gain stage. I don't know if the Tonex Pedal is in the best configuration for pedals and I also don't know if the Tonex One is in the best way to receive these pedals through the Tonex Pedal. Maybe some musicians have the same doubts. Cheers from Brazil!

Thank you very much for your efforts in trying to unveil the nuances and tricks related to the Tonex pedal, they are really useful! However I'm a bit lost since I've tried for example the provided Custom DI Strat samples @0.0 dB and when played in the Tonex App they sound with way much gain than if I try to play the same riff with my guitar in the Tonex Pedal with my Strat (American Ultra with noiseless hot pickups) and with an Input Trim aligned with your samples, that is, adjusted to 0. I need to increase the Input Trim to more than 10 (or the gain a lot in the pedal) in order to get the same amount of gain to my ears. I'm trying with some edge to breakup tones since they are for me easier to make tests (they are just in the middle of a clean and crunch sound). What am I missing?

hello, Jason has a video explaining how to set trim properly, in general you should set TRIM low as 0, (I use mine in 3) so it can accomodate any guitar with quality for recording and live.

Does anyone know if there's a way to increase the overall *output* of the Tonex pedal? I've found that even when I run it through my Headrush FRFR 112 via DI box, although it gets loud-ish, even maxed at 10 it's nowhere near as loud as other modelers going through the same FRFR speaker.

Thanks for your help. I have one question because something is driving me nuts : i'm trying to use the tonex one to test sounds in tonex one se. I know that i must use it in bypass mode, the problem is that even in bypass mode the pedal is adding a huge amount of gain, i tried to set every single parameter (input trim, global volume, gain...) but this does not fix anything (it's bypassed it should not have such a gain??) this make the test of the presets really anoying because once i have my preset saved in my pedal i'm not having the same amount of volume
@moejoe46543 ай бұрын
Thanks Jason for including the Ultralite mk5. like you said it has a very high headroom (+24dbu on the front inputs), I usually leave the input level in Cumix at 0 because I don"t want to boost my guitars signal before it hits the virtual amps. but the closest I get to the character and level of your DI is if I dial in +8 DB on the interface input and +8 (whatever the unit) in Tonex Software input. which make no sense to me. do you mind sharing your settings since you have the Motu Ultralite MK5?
@JasonSadites3 ай бұрын
My pleasure! So MOTU does not actually publish the specs of the Hi-Z Instrument input. As you mention the spec states max. input of 24 dBu for the Line input. I measured the instrument input myself and set at minimum gain I get a reading of approx. 19 dBu max input for the Hi-Z Instrument input. So when I us it I always have it set to +8 dB on the Instrument input which then gives it it 11 dBu of headroom and puts it in line with how I run all of my Instrument inputs. In fact, when I shoot my videos the MOTU Ultralite Mk. 5 is the interface I use. So when you hear Tonex in my videos, you are hearing the guitar plugged into that input with the +8 dB added as previously mentioned. Hope that helps :-)

Great video and greatly appreciated! Could you please elaborate on what you mean by "all at minimum gain unless stated otherwise" when referring to audio interfaces? For example, I run a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen into ToneX via my desktop. There's an input trim on each line-in with the ability to choose between instrument and line level. For guitar, obviously setting it to instrument level. However, there are no reference marks on the input trim. Thus, what is the best way to set that to a consistent "minimum gain"?
@JasonSadites3 ай бұрын
Thank you and glad you enjoyed :-) "minimum gain" here means to keep the gain knob on the Instrument Input to the lowest setting. Hope that helps!
@dasfette3 ай бұрын
@@JasonSadites Gotcha. So, if I'm understanding correctly, said another way: Per your PDF, and all things equal, a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 Gen 4 will be 4.0 - 4.5 dB hotter/louder than a TONEX Pedal at the "same" settings.

That list of input trim to audio interfaces at minimum gain?... Forgive me asking but I don't understand why this is useful. Who uses their audio interface at minimum gain? Don't most people play as loud as they can while turning up the gain until it clips, then you back it off a bit? So does minimum gain mean 0? I have a 3rd gen Focusrite 4i4 and it doesn't have any labels, do I just assume 12 O'Clock?
@iursnitram3 ай бұрын
All the way down is zero.
@CharLessMajor7Music3 ай бұрын
Most amp sim companies such as neural dsp recommends it to minimum gain(0). So most people likely uses minimum gain nowadays after that video circulating around about interface gain on most amp sims..
@yacreader3 ай бұрын
what’s “back it off a bit”? shouldn’t we be using measurable methods for setting up our gain? don’t we want to have the exact same input level when we plug a specific guitar? And don’t we want to have different input levels depending on different guitars so we can truly use the characteristics(output) of their pickups?
@TimsonThunder3 ай бұрын
What I never understood about Tonex is: Why adjust the inputtrim to a variable setting on an interface? Why did they not make a fixed setting for input trim on the pedal and make you adjust the ingoing signal on your interface to match the pedal? That way every capture would have the same startingpoint 🤷🏻♂️. And if you buy a pack you are not wondering what the "capturer" had in mind.
@yacreader3 ай бұрын
So….what’s the point of the default sound samples? Why is IK using that level if that’s not how the model is supposed to work/sound? IK multimedia has the best capture technology and then they do things like this and have all their clients scratching their head. The truth is that we don’t know how their models are supposed to sound like because they don’t provide any information that would allow us to do a proper calibration of our signals…
@MostlyElectrolytes3 ай бұрын
Not to keep beating this horse, but I never understood the idea of adjusting the input trim/gain based on guitar. That's not how the real equipment works. A Stratocaster is supposed to be lower output than a Les Paul...why have different guitars if you are trying to get them to all sound the same (or in that case unrealistic)? Adjust the gain or add a boost or if you want adjust the input trim/gain, but realize that it's a capability and not a problem.
@JasonSadites3 ай бұрын
I could not agree more! I have never understood the fascination with constantly changing the levels. Set it once with enough headroom for all your guitars and leave it alone. Great comment!
@RichiAtlanticWind3 ай бұрын
Totally agree. Just recently I watched a video from The Studio Rats that showed a "trick" to make the Tele and the Les Paul sound similar by using a compressor before the Tonex Pedal and I was like... but why then change guitars? You want different guitars for different sounds. Not make all guitars get the same amount of distortion from the tone model regardless of the output of the guitar. A real amp would react completely different to different guitars and that's what you want.
@rhoydotp3 ай бұрын
while I agree with you, I also understand why people want to do this. since it’s digital device, the option of getting the perfect setting for the individual guitar should easily be possible. not saying right or wrong but it does make sense in some level.
@RichiAtlanticWind3 ай бұрын
@@rhoydotp and it is easily possible. Just adjust the gain on the preset for the guitar you are going to use and leave the input trim alone. No need for complicated setups or adding a compressor pedal in front.

Well it makes things pretty user unfriendly. It needs audio engineering skils to get a simple tone. And your changes are way too fast, and this vid is not usable because of that. Make it slower and simple, man. This is not simple at all.
