This is absolutely the best version of this song. He played and sang it many times in many venues. This is my personal favorite. The piano, his voice and we can see him without his signature aviator glasses. What a treasure to have it in video. I hope he’s the leader of the band and sound engineer in Heaven!

A dozen years ago I taught a creative, bright and expressive teenager who I later realized was one of Leon's daughters. One of my favorite Leon Russell songs, the last time I saw him live he performed this song and I cried like a baby! He told the story of when and why he wrote it right before he played it. He said he had come home from touring and his then wife told him she wanted a divorce. He sat down and wrote this beautiful song and sang it to her! I'll remember that night the rest of my life, precious memories! ✌️❤️

When I look at Leon's face it looks like he was in a lot of pain when he did this song. That intense look in his eyes he was singing his heart out. Love this song. And this especially shows he was getting closer and closer to his God. Had he had his own church, I would have walked the path with him and I'm sure many others would. Down deep inside he preached. this showcases his talent in a stark, unique and unambiguous way. Songwriting, piano playing, how he manifests his musical skill to construct the melody to match the meaning of the song, the faith symbolism weaved in to the lyrics, a tempered display of emotion that is evocative but not maudlin, his personal emotional invenstment in the song that shows in his face in the time between lines - seeing this makes it clear that he was one of his generation's greatest talents, and it was a generation with a lot of it.

And Leons telling a story and stops and points at me and said that young guy right there is the reason I still play! I was almost in tears when I talked to him after the show. I told him I'm a Leon lifer as are my parents, my parents were playing the shelter people record in the delivery room when I was born. Hes my hero no one so elegant yet so bold, to evee walk the earth. I owe you so much Leon!!!

+Pappy Reeves It's people like you that make me feel like it's worth it to take the time to write a heartfelt YT comment let alone even a simple one. So often we have to read the nasty hate speech typed by keyboard warriors and internet trolls. For the sole purpose of hurting other people to make up for there severely deficient self Esteem. But not here, never here. Leon Russell videos are the only videos/songs on you tube I'll even read the comments let alone post one. And thats because in this infinite space, and in this tiny frozen moment of time: peace, happiness, joy, kindness, respect, and love exists. It's as if the true master of space time, Leon himself personally deletes all the negativity. All the comments on his videos are filled with peoles wonderful memories and beautiful recollections of how this amazing man, changed, and continues to change lives for the better all around the world. We love you Leon!!! Love and light to you and to everyone!!!

cdavydude You say that Leon Russell does not have what it takes to make it in today's music industry ? OK, I'm holding my sides I laughed so hard when I read that. Are you daft, deaf or just plain nuts ? This man is an American music legend. Not only is he a stand out showman in his own right, but he has played piano for every big name in the past four decades. And No, he would not disrespect himself nor his talent by lending his musical genius to today'''s garbage that's passed off as music. In forty years from now will anyone be playing Bieber, or Miley Cyrus' music ? Today's music, or what passes for music is all synthetic . Show me one person today who can even play piano in the neighborhood of Leon Russell's reach. My Lord man, you are completely out of touch with real talent ? The 60s, 70, 80s music is the music that will stand the test of time. Leon Russell will still be played by generations well into the future, as long as evolution has not completely eliminated the hearing process. I've read a lot of crazy posts but when you added the word 'talent' to your post, you blew it.

I remember seeing him play this on TV in the mid 80s and being completely blown away by the performance. I forgot about the song until today when I was watching a session video of him and probably the only equally great studio musician, Glenn Campbell. Coming out of a break he was obviously discussing and playing this song explain a key change to one of the guitarists. Just like that the song came back to me and I watched this and was overwhelmed just like in 1984. A gigantic talent.
