Halen, your Grandfather was to me one of the most genuine, kind-hearted artists I've ever set eyes on. Fell in love with his music & persona back in '67 and first saw him in late 68. He had a very keen ability to see all that was going on all around him. He wasn't (from what I've observed over the years) a very talkative person. But he took in it seems alot. He became alittle more talkative in his latter years. I couldn't tell you why that was though. I saw him one time in St. Louis a very long time ago and long story short was being smashed by a very large amount of people who had rushed the stage and Leon saw what was going on and asked the people to move back and not crowd the stage. Well, that didn't do much to help the situation, so he looked at me and about 10-15 other people and motioned to us to go to the side of the stage which had steps up to the stage. I just stood there as if I had no idea what he was saying and he said out loud to me if I didn't want to feel like a sardine to come up and sit down on the stage while he finished his set. And it wasn't just girls it was a mixture of the both of boys n girls. So, I thought well hell why not, never get an opportunity like that again. I às went up and sat down I looked at him and said thank you Mr. Russell and he smiled and said I hope you enjoy the show. And of course I did, it was the nicest thing that had ever happened to me at a concert I went to. He sure had a nice smile and way about himself

Leon Russell was definitely ahead of his time. I think he turned off a lot of people because of his eccentricities and appearance. However, the songs that he wrote / performed are enduring, and many, many performers have covered his songs. Thx so much, Mr. Russell. We will miss you! ❤

Leon was truly the king of tickling the ivories of a ragtime piano. His music went completely against the grain of what was called contemporary music stylings but DAMN the man was a genius. Tightrope was a song that will live forever. Lyrically, the man was unmatched. Rest in peace Leon, you live on through your legion of fans that still remember you.

And to think he had to work at least twice as hard to play and even walk due to a traumatic birth injury paralyzed his right side. He took 10 years of piano lessons from age 4-14, then his band was hired on the spot by Jerry Lee Lewis. He also said it took him a long time to learn how to hold guitar pick in his right semi-paralyzed but of course Leon showed great resilience. The fact that Elton heard his session work on an early album and was his inspiration style that he has of course made his own but if you hear LR piano you will understand he was a gifted player despite his right hand having limitations. You wouldn’t have known it 🤷🏼♀️

I saw Leon Russell in Albuquerque, NM. My first date in college. I drove my friend's Ford Falcon painted flat black with the hubs painted flaming orange. No muffler. It was a great concert.

So funny. THAT car... my THAT car was a gold 1966 Vista Cruiser station wagon with crimson interior and about 150k miles on it. My dad did all the maintenance on it and had wired it for a trailer so it had some "quirks" like the headlights dimming when you used the turn signals. It was my date car as well. I took her to see a Pink Panther movie and on the way back, the headlights went out. I finally figured out that the fuse for the headlights had just fallen out and it was fine after I popped it back into place.

This lovely song was composed and lyrics by Leon Russell. I'm not criticizing anyone who did a great job covering his songs. But, how could Leon Russell die in 2016 with only $600,000 dollars to his name ? Russell wrote and recorded so many huge hits, and recorded (covered) by huge music stars, and then died with so little. Please just remember Leon Russell who suffered health problems his entire life, then tragically died in relative obscurity at 74 years old in 2016.

I got to meet Mr. Russel in my first job when I was 14. I usually saw him about once a month. We never really talked until the last time I saw him. He was always very nice to me and I made sure to not bother him or ask him for anything. He was one of my favorite recording artists when I met him and it was hard not to be a fanboy. My family was in the film industry though so I was taught not to be annoying to people who were well known. I feel very fortunate to have been able to spend some time with him though. The last time I saw him he said it would be the last time and asked me if there was anything he could do for me. So I asked him some things about songwriting and he was very nice about giving me very well thought out answers. I think getting to spend a little time with him made me write a lot more songs than I would have without his influence.
