“Everybody got this broken feeling like their father or their dog just died”. This lyric hits so hard. Everybody knows he had to make it universally relatable by adding the dog, in case you didn’t have a father.
@deborahcurtis13859 ай бұрын
I bought this album to make a long drive, with some buckets of flowers, travelling 350km, I kept the heater off because it would wilt the flowers. Going to my father's funeral. I bought the album blind, had no idea it was this song with these lyrics. I've played the album on fairly regular rotation since then. One night since then, I felt a particularly strong compulsion to play it, and the song that starts: "they sentenced me to 15 years of boredom, for trying to change the system from within"... I played it loudly and I felt a presence in the room. The words mean so much to me. Then later that night I discovered that Leonard Cohen had died. I have no idea what that presence was, but I can tell you it really struck me. This is one heck of an album.

Every line in this song speaks volumes. So profound and so deep in such a raw, lyrical and groovy-anthem kind of way. A true poet. A true artist. A poet of the highest order. Just like Bob Dylan. Even more applicable than it was at the time of release. "Everybody talking to their pockets, Everybody wants a box of chocolates and a long stemmed rose..." Makes me think of people in the midst of an impending apocalypse numbing themselves by looking for love on their smartphones. The whole song is cynical, bitter and true. Sums up humanity perfectly.

talking to you pockets can also mean keeping your head down, like to avoid a fight you think could break out any moment.

But also calm and soothing. He is a fabulous artist!

Talking to your pockets could also be a reference to the greed that was rampant in the 80's. People were more focused on making money than the problems of the world around them

@@A_Lion_In_The_Sun Of course. I do like how the line is also open to newer interpretations.

Imo this hit harder in Bitconned than War Dogs. Not to say War Dogs is one of the coolest movies ever
