I coudn't agree more. There are nice renditions out there, but the way he delivers the lines has such a raw emotion behind them that I never felt in any of the others I heard so far.

Not quite the same message, theirs feels more of a happy praise to the lord, compared to Cohen's more broken and sadder pleading and maybe I have just missed it, being lost in the song, but I don't quite remember them having the very powerful conclusion in it either, but that is also one of the beauties of this song. You can take the verses, mix and match them and they still work.

@robertrowlands3642 Cohen wrote these words, not Buckley. Supposedly Cohen provided John Cale 15 full pages of extra verses for the song and he picked which ones he liked for his cover, which Jeff Buckley later used. Cohen himself sings many of these extra verses on live albums, some of which are really good.

I feel like a certain level of blasphemous ADHD was spewed out of my mouth when I made a parody to this tune, about Malibu Rum. I don't feel proud of it for the blasphemy at all...and yet, I am grateful for the creativity and inspiration I'm given to write funky limericks and songs that make my friends laugh... I just need to not do it in a blasphemous way. 🤦‍♀️
