Leonard Cohen has been there all through my life. And with every new album one or two songs were added to my personal list of all-time favourites. Leonard is there with the truly great like Beethoven, Mozart, Bach and Brel, with songs such as Halleluja, If it be your will and The window. Thank you, Leonard Cohen, for making the world more beautiful.

His most hypnotic rendition. This is the best version. He says "yah" instead of "you" and it makes for a much smoother and, in my opinion a more emotive feel to the song. I know Leonard preferred to use his words rather than taking shortcuts; this song transcends that. If it's the only song he sang with slang then all the better to differentiate it even more from all (of his) songs. This is a masterpiece, like 'Bohemian Rhapsody', it just pulls you into its orbit and you get lost in it.

This is my favorite version of this song. At this point in his life his voice was that perfect blend of all that whiskey and cigarettes or what ever (he says ) caused this deep rich sound. .AND this song is so amazingly rich. It evokes emotions that have nothing to do with religion for me. It is joyful, painful, spiritual, poignant and sexual. Leonard, what a song, what a guy!
