This is a magnificent performance: Javier Mas opens up with the sort of long Spanish Guitar solo that made him famous, and then it flows in to Leonard Cohen singing _Who By Fire?,_ from a recent concert in Las Vegas. Leonard Cohen's music has always meant a great deal to me -- he speaks (and writes) to things deep in my heart, often with painful honesty about our motivations, our conflicts, our triumphs. I had the chance to see him perform in Oakland last year, which was an amazing experience; the profound _respect_ which he showed, to his audience, to his fellow musicians, to everyone around him, was palpable. People were driving so politely when they left the parking lot; it just wouldn't feel right to act like a jerk after that. This song also has deep meanings for me. Cohen based it on an old prayer, Unetaneh Tokef, about how our fates are forged by the hand of God, essentially by forces outside our control: who will die this year by fire? Who by water? Who will rest, who will wander? On Yom Kippur, the prayer says, our fates for the next year will be inscribed; repentance, prayer, and charity, it says, may not save us, may not change the course of things which will happen, but they "avert the severe decree." The prayer itself -- so the story goes -- was written by two hands, Rabbi Amnon of Mainz and his closest friend, Rabbi Klonymos. (Who is my Nth-great-grandfather) Amnon was taken in one of the persecutions, and ordered to convert; he delayed, he refused, and as punishment had his arms and legs cut off, and was returned unceremoniously to his students and family. A few days later, in the synagogue at Rosh Hashanah, he recited this prayer, and died. Soon after (the story says that Amnon came to him in a dream and asked him to do this), Klonymos wrote it down, and it became part of the standard liturgy of the High Holidays. The prayer's power comes from the way it captures all of the fear and uncertainty about the year to come. Even though the story above is far from certain, it was definitely written in days when the fear of torture and murder was on everyone's lips, on top of all of the other fears: of fire, of plague, of war, of loss. And yet there was hope, trying to spring out of everyone's chest, and this captured that conflict. Cohen turned this into a question for our modern age, but left behind none of the fear. I've always loved his ability to do that. via *****.

I have seen this video many times but today I read your comment. I do not have many heroes in my life, somehow though Leonard Cohen is one of them. It is not only art, it is much more that music and lyrics. He was or came across like the perfect gentleman with his manners, his respect for the public and for others. Just the way would take off his hat and gracefully, and with humility interacted with other musicians; said a lot about this great man. I was there too. i was very fortunate to have the opportunity to see him during this one day only concert in Las Vegas. If i remember well the concert started about 9:00 P. M. Despite his age and who knows if by this time he was also terminally ill, we were there enjoying this man's music until around 12:15 A. M. and we no lack of energy. For those fortunate enough to have been there and live this experience, can say more than art and music we enjoyed, this experience felt in a way like something sublime as if we were in a temple, a church, a synagogal. It was nice to read your comment and to know what you describe "...overall respectful atmosphere..."

In this song, Leonard Cohen plays with a very important Hebrew Prayer from Rosh Hashana , the Jewish New Year in September. On Rosh Hashana God will decide who will live and who will die, who will die by fire and who will die by water, who by sword and who will die at his predestined time and who before his time who by famine and who by thirst. But repentance, prayer and charity remove the evil of the decree.

And it really does look like he's staring into a fire, Albert. Look how the fire lights his face and his guitar strap sometimes appears to be in flame. I was fascinated at the time and still am at how the spotlights reflected on Javier's guitar surface and made it appear pearly white. I watch your videos and wonder all these people can possibly go their own ways after such an intense three years together [Javier's intro seems a goodbye to them]. Thank you, Albert. Professional & heartfelt.

Lyrics And who by fire, who by water Who in the sunshine, who in the night time Who by high ordeal, who by common trial Who in your merry merry month of May Who by very slow decay And who shall I say is calling? And who in her lonely slip, who by barbiturate Who in these realms of love, who by something blunt And who by avalanche, who by powder Who for his greed, who for his hunger And who shall I say is calling? And who by brave assent, who by accident Who in solitude, who in this mirror Who by his lady's command, who by his own hand Who in mortal chains, who in power And who shall I say is calling? And who shall I say is calling? And who by fire who by water Who in the sunshine, who in the night time Who by high ordeal, who by common trial Who in your merry merry month of May Who by very slow decay And who shall I say is calling?
