When they poured across the border I was cautioned to surrender This I could not do; I took my gun and vanished I have changed my name so often I've lost my wife and children But I have many friends And some of them are with me An old woman gave us shelter Kept us hidden in the garret Then the soldiers came; She died without a whisper There were three of us this morning I'm the only one this evening But I must go on; The frontiers are my prison Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing Through the graves the wind is blowing Freedom soon will come; Then we'll come from the shadows Les Allemands étaient chez moi Ils me dirent, "Signe toi," Mais je n'ai pas peur; J'ai repris mon arme J'ai changé cent fois de nom J'ai perdu femme et enfants Mais j'ai tant d'amis; J'ai la France entière Un vieil homme dans un grenier Pour la nuit nous a caché Les Allemands l'ont pris; Il est mort sans surprise Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing Through the graves the wind is blowing Freedom soon will come; Then we'll come from the shadows Tribute to Leonard Cohen, born September 21, 1934, with this wonderful song. "This song has a beautiful story. Written by Anna Marly, in Russian in homage to Soviet resistance, then became the much more famous Partisan Song with lyrics by Joseph Kessel and Maurice Druon, it became the Partisan's Lament after an eminent French resistance fighter, Emmanuel d'Astier de la Vigerie, would have composed the lyrics. Hy Zaret, a prolific American successful author heard this song on the BBC during the war: it moved him, he translated it. it will pass for its author. In 1969, Léonard Cohen, Canadian artist, rising figure of the North American "counter culture" unearths this song then forgotten and gives it a second life, mixing French and English texts. It has since been taken over by many singers in France and the United States. In the mode of the lament, that is to say a plaintive tale full of melancholy, the song makes speak a character who, without joy and without apparent passion, engages in a fight from which he knows the certain outcome: prison, pain, death. But he refuses to live on his knees and knows that freedom will return. We note that there is no fervor in the subject, no glorification is expected, while the price to pay (losing wife and children) is enormous: when freedom returns, we will return to the shadow of the anonymity."
