Ethel Waters was one of the greatest gospel singers of all time, and her performance of "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" is a gem. Rest in peace, Ethel.

These were tremendously talented artists that were the creation of a far different culture than that of today, an era that expected and appreciated quality music. As a child I often would sit and listen in amazement to these wonderful performers on the "Voice of Firestone" radio program. Regrettably, we will never see the likes of these vocalists again.

Music has no color except that of red - the red of the blood that beat through the hearts of each performer shown here. Although we are welcomingly and wonderfully diverse, whether or not we as a society choose to uphold this unassailably perfect standard without rancor or compromise remains to be seen. Hopefully we can do so in this lifetime…

Still waiting for so much talent... nowadays you find a „droplet of talent“ every now and then... in former times there was talent everywhere... Part of the problem are the masses of bumbling voice teachers who often ruin a talent instead of developing it... So sad...! Thank you for this great video! 🙏

The first time I saw a video of Jessye Norman singing "Crucifixion," I found myself standing there with my mouth open after her own gripping performance. One of the producers of Anderson's recording said that he could never hear her sing this without weeping.

It's not coming back for sure. Funny thing is the so many fastidious critics (real and armchair) everywhere longing for the good old days; for singing as pure, as rounded, as innocent and as bygone as what we hear in this video ALL THE WHILE having to perform fellatio or get raped or whatever it is they are asked to do by fashionable directors. Well, something has to give in that culture/environment. And something has broken indeed.
@operassassinOperaAssassin11 жыл бұрын
I think it WILL come back, in a different form. Let's not forget that pre-Callas, singers were as sloppy & reliant on histrionics as they are now. There are still artists who uphold personally-forged rigor: Thinking of Laura Claycomb, Jonas Kaufmann, Vesselina Kasarova, Colin Lee and several others. Can't expect such classy performances on TV now though. Steber & Warren are sublime. The Tchaikovsky piece is just what one wants to hear in that piece - glorious.

LW remains the standard against which all so-called "Verdi baritones" must be measured....and, they all fail miserably by comparison!
@SymphonyBrahms9 жыл бұрын
Paolo Ferraro Agreed. Leonard Warren is the king of all baritones. No one else can compare.
@Dadacomero8 жыл бұрын
not really, Ruffo was one of the king of the "big (verismo) singing" which was so in fashion in those years, unfortunately. A male Gina Cigna more or less there was no phrasing, no carachterization, no different colors in his singing. Big fortissimo singing with a great instrument. very nice to listen now and then, yes, but that was it
@larrywoods63188 жыл бұрын
Would tend to disagree with you. LW was very good, but so was MacNeal and PC
@paullewis24136 жыл бұрын
Paolo Ferraro. "They all fail miserably by comparison" Unwise comment really. Sure Warren is one of the greatest but to say Taddei, Merrill, Mac Neil, Bastianini fail miserably is simply not true.
@UncleLouie86711 жыл бұрын
Sorry. It ain't NEVER comin' back. A few good voices in ugly productions don't make it. Pre-Callas days.. we had magnificent singers. But, these comments are pointless. We all know i'm right and you're wrong. That's why you've always been jealous of me.
@marymargaretblumhorst53593 жыл бұрын
There are still magnificent singers! Opera is alive and well! Open your ears and your mind and really listen to post Callas voices. Many every bit as gorgeous and captivating as there ever was.! Some people simply attach everything to the days when they were younger and felt better. Maybe you just can’t hear as well as you could back then!
