Great Leonar Warren. His french diction is very good. He died on stage at the Met in 1960 during La forza del destino.

WOW! What a voice!! I performed this in French in recital, but in English in an Opera performance. At 4:10 in the actual opera, there is a break where Carmen's 2 girlfriends each sing "L'amour", with Escamillio repeating it after each and finally Carmen's sultry L'amour" and again Escamillo's "L'amour" . . . then the final refrain of "Toreador, l'amour t'attend". Evidently, Warren thought that since there were no women, they were going right to the final refrain, but the pro that he was caught it quickly that the conductor went to another reprise . . . miscommunications happens. But once again what a voice he had!!!!

Warren was clearly taken by surprise at 3:55 when he was ready for the final cadence and the orchestra came in with another repeat of the chorus.

Non era una critica, no no. MAI. Cosa si può criticare di lui? Niente. Rispetto al Toreador di Tibbett... CHE TOREADOR! Concordo con Lei. Saluti.

Is interesting know the date of this execution. Mr Warren does not seems so young. The age is important also for the singer performances. In any case he made a very good execution. Massive and dark voice, good vocalist even in the high register. Bravo. Escamillo is a role destined for baritone, but often the role his executed also from a basso lirico or a basso cantabile. Catch him at about 4:12. Woops! Any singer can have an embarrassing moment like this. Too bad this one was televised. Anyway, Warren seems to be having fun nevertheless & delivers his predictably solid performance. The piece & the role lay a bit low for him & once he was really established at the MET he wisely relinquished the entire part but still often programmed the Toreador Song as here.

I'm in the minority but I just don't like the quality of his voice. I never have. He did something unusual with his vowels and it doesn't work for me. I don't hate him, not at all. But I prefer baritones like Merrill, Macneil or Tibbett, among Americans.
