Prior to this scene she had been established to be very competent and dedicated to her craft, and not the average child actor. That's why her compliment meant so much to him and us, the audience: even though she's just a child, Dalton rightfully considered her a peer. That's why I love this scene.

The pathos of this character is actually quite fascinating, and something that doesn't get explored enough in movies (probably because it's not all that sexy). At the core of Rick Dalton is just a profound desire to do well. At first, his career aspiration seems to be all about vanity (and perhaps it is to a degree), but once we actually get to set with him, it becomes clear how much he genuinely cares about doing a great job, even for a little bit part on a random show. That's a very universal struggle - wanting to do a good job, beating yourself up when you don't perform as well as you could, and using that fire to perform better next time. It's quietly inspiring.

This scene felt like a sense of relief, after seeing Rick Dalton depressed throughout the film... to see the Director (the original Spider-Man actor), praise Rick Dalton (Leo) 2:48 it was almost shocking to see a "happy moment" like that in a Tarantino film. I was expecting some twist at the end of the scene like the cameras weren't even rolling and they had to go again.

To really see how good of an actor Dicaprio is it really helps to see when he's intentionally acting bad - during the scene when he forgets lines and is generally not natural. Now he's on top of his game in this scene and the difference is so huge, that you automatically appreciate Dicaprio's craft.

I think a lot of people (including me initially) overlook how great DiCaprio's performance is in this scene and the scene before. How you can see how Rick Dalton is moved that he finally did something right, he finally got some respect. You can see how not used to this he is, how much it means to him and you literally see how the expression changes in his eyes from that of surprised joy to a kind of inner, subjective reflection of "OK, at long last I finally did something right, I finally succeeded at least at something". This and the scene before where DiCaprio had to act like he forgot his lines, but still tried to stay emotionally in the scene, but couldn't because he's pissed off at himself - it's one of the best pieces of acting DiCaprio has ever done and it's probably what will earn him another Oscar nomination. And it's all the more impressive considering he himself has never experienced failure like this - he was always lauded and respected since his early acting days, he is the exact opposite of a loser and yet he absolutely nails the emotions of someone who feels like an overlooked piece of crap that gets no respect. A hell of an actor.

This scene (and the scene before it) absolutely sold me on this as one of the best flicks i've seen. You start out slowly, getting to know the neuroses of DiCarpBro's character, his insecurities and belief that he is a has been. When he fails his lines and goes berserk about it in extreme hyperbole - you are on edge for this entire scene. You really believe for a while there that he will fail his career at this point in the movie and botch the scene, and then this happens, he turns it around and BAM, goosebumps.
