My brother stopped drinking 6 months ago, and when everyone asked him at Hanukkah why he wasn't drinking, he simply said, "Ever since I had Covid, alcohol tastes like vinegar." No one asked him or gave him a hard time ever again!

Another vote for leaving when things get too crazy and ridiculous. You don't have to stay for the whole party. Sometimes a token appearance of fifteen minutes is all a person can tolerate.

Very good suggestion. It's ok to just visit for a while & then politely leave. Visiting has been fairly shallow (& often one-sided) with the people who are drinking alcohol.

Feel you on this. Family party… everyone getting louder… dribbling all over the place… talking bollocks… I’m major triggered being the only sober one.

gahhh so true. when I first stopped drinking I had so many people tell me they wish they could do the same. I found that the more I drank alcohol, the worse my stress and anxiety got. it was a very temporary solution that resulted in a way worse consequences.

Exactly . Alcohol is poison. There’s no way to moderate it except to stop completely. Alcohol is evil and the devil’s piss. I’m one month sober and feeling amazing. Alcohol is the biggest lie on Earth. One day, it will be outlawed.

Thank you very much I think I needed this.i had a rough night and was looking for someone to give me a solid reason to stop drinking to act like people I seen and want to accept and acknowledge me. There is absolutely nothing to gain from drinking besides a night you can't remember or a night you with forget for the wrong reason

Any thoughts on how to deal with people and what to say about why you are not drinking? Sometimes I feel like I may be perceived as "better than you" because I am not drinking and don't want to come across that way. I usually just say "I don't drink". If they really push me about it, I usually just say "it doesn't provide any benefit to me so I don't do it". Once I quit drinking alcohol and changed my perspective on it, I was amazed at how desperate people are to try and get you to drink because they need to have that social validation for what they are doing (it is very sad and I can see how trapped they are in all the lies around alcohol). It would be nice to have some ideas about how to say "no" without having to explain for 20 minutes why I don't drink alcohol.

I don't want to explain for 20 minutes either. I just say "I don't drink" and then walk to the other side of the room

I recommend to be as polite and respectful as possible and tell them you used to drink, but you stopped for health reasons. As long as you remain respectful no decent person will mind. If someone gets pushy and tries to convince you to drink, start crying and run and hide in the toilets - works like a charm! Just kidding :) If they are toxic you can always avoid them, or tell them its for health reasons and you would rather not go into it.. It shouldnt be an issue. Ultimately its your free choice, to look after yourself and not associate pleasure with poisoning yourself, which is actually a socially acceptable form of mental illness.. If you want to be challenging to them, you can ask them why they enjoy drinking a potentially deadly poison for fun? Ask them if they enjoy cutting themselves too or if its just the drinking poison they enjoy? - make sure you are trained in self defense before you try this! ;)

I would suggest only talk about it with people you trust and who are your friend. If it's stranger who asks you why you don't drink, then don't make a statement, just try to say you quit like it's no big problem and then start a new subject. Talking with a stranger about this subject for a couple of minutes might destroy their impression of you. Even if you do it for your own health.

I usually never have to explain beyond "I personally don't enjoy the feeling of being intoxicated."

As a non drinker, it’s just not important to me to care about giving a reason any more than explaining about declining dessert. You’re not the only person not drinking and it’s not weird.

Leon, you are really just teaching every (ex) drinker to think like every healthy non drinker thinks naturally. It’s all in the attitude and how you feel about something. Yes, we can become entirely new people with entirely new values and worldviews.

It's one thing to go out and socialize with drinkers where you can leave easily. It's a completely different scenario when the drinker is staying with you and doesn't respect your sobriety by insisting on drinking at your place and you can't get rid of them. They keep you awake till all hours and become a nuisance. I have experienced this on numerous occasions at the lake where you cannot send them away because there is nowhere to send them as they are your guest and they are miles away from home 😢 They don't get invited back, but in the meantime my anger comes out and I want to cut them out of my life forever. It's always a dilemma with me. I think I need to work harder at not being an enabler. Need to strengthen my boundaries!

I advise if you're a drinker, and your trying to get sober, is to stay away from anything or anyone that either encourages alcohol consumption, or who tempts you to drink. Don't believe you're strong enough to abstain from drinking, if you have a natural weakness toward it. Don't put yourself in a situation that you could fall back into it again. As far as family members who are drunks, my only advice, as I've dealt with this first hand the ugliness the drinking does to them, my advice is literally qnd quite frankly is to stay as far away from them as you can. Some have fallen into a trap that they need help getting out of, but others are in it because that's ultimately where they want to be, and sadly the latter has been my experience, and that is why I say just stay away from them. All dealing with them is going to do for you is push your buttons and steal your joy, and nobody is worth that.

footnote: You don't have to drink red wine to live longer. There is one ONE chemical in red wine that helps you live longer. It is called resveratrol. A person can get the benefits by buying nutritional supplements containing resveratrol online or in the local health food and supplements store on the nearest shopping street or shopping mall. Just use the resveratrol supplement capsules and you will feel better.

Also in grape juice and grapes. Better to eat organic grapes than toxic red wine.

Then why do I feel so elated and euphoric after 2 drinks ? I feel more enthusiastic and energetic when I’m drinking. Music sounds better and life is so fun and I feel like I come out of my shell. I’m 11 days sober today because I’m sick of the hangovers and I was finding that I was drinking more than I wanted to. The negative feelings really outweigh the positive. I can’t wait until I don’t have any more cravings and be happy sober forever.

my drunken landlord abused me and my father today. He was yelling and cursing. I am fed up of these drunkards. An uncle of ours used to abuse us same way after drinking. I am scarred. Can't handle this. I have never tasted alcohol in my life, but i am terribly sad and depressed. Everyone around judges us for not drinking and kind of out cast us. Today is a sad day for me, thats why i searched how to handle drunkard people on youtube and ended up here. My heart is pacing and eyes are wet. These drunkard people act so inhumanly. I cannot imagine living a normal life without confronting them one day. or other.
