Awesome talent! Thanks for such a great tutorial. I like the way you talk through the process and that you take it slow so I can understand the technique. I am working on a wild cat from a photograph I took at a zoo 6 years ago. It's multi-colored and I don't know the breed but it's a good looking cat. I just completed our house cat and it's not bad but I can use some improvement.

What's the reason you choose to use coloured pencils on pastel mat instead of pastels? What are the advantages of it compared to pastels? I thought it wasn't possible to layer coloured pencils on pastel mat, but now I'm curious to try. Did you use the clairefontain pastel mat?
@lizziedae915 жыл бұрын
Glacenair that is the only pastel mat paper. There are other pastel papers though. You can layer soooo many layers of colored pencil on it. Check out KZbin channel animal art by LAW. She has videos showing how many layers it takes
@Leontinevanvliet5 жыл бұрын
I feel with color pencils you can go a little more detailed than with pastels. I really like the sharp look of colored pencils against the blurry pastel background! My goal was to make that contrast really high. To me the advantage of colored pencil is the fact that you can't smudge and that there's no excess dust coming from the drawing. The advantage of working with cp on pastelmat, is that you can layer light colors on top of dark ones. On regular white paper that isn't possible! So with this drawing I felt I could combine the qualities of pastel with the qualities of colored pencil, which worked great!:)

Why do you not use any blending for the coloured pencil like mineral spirits or zest it? Does pastelmat just not require/work with these?

I'm not a fan of the look of that! I like the look of 'dry' colored pencil on paper:)

Many thanks for your answers, I’m so happy ❤️ The link you sent me, the background is so wonderful blurry. Is ist made only with the Polychromos? I tried so many paper, Strathmore, Clairefontaine and so on, with rough, structured surface. But the estompe didn‘t work at all. It didn’t blend the Polychromos. So I threw it away because I was so frustrated. But I did not yet try the Pastelmat! Do you work with the estompe, too? Maybe it is the paper... but is there such a difference between rough surfaces? Sorry for questioning again but Pastelmat is so expensive 😊
@Leontinevanvliet4 жыл бұрын
Pastelmat is totally worth the price, as you can't compare it to any other paper! I LOVE it haha. For the background I used soft pastels, only for the leopard I used polychromos. I don't know estompe, never heard of it! So never tried that haha

@@Leontinevanvliet Thank you for answering my question!! I am used to painting in Oil paint and I would like to start with colored pencils, so I want to buy a paper that gives me a smooth finish similar to a real painting. Which of the two can give a more paint-like smooth finish?
@Spanishwithjackie19144 жыл бұрын
could i use pastel pencil on Canson 1557 paper
@suzannefulton30153 жыл бұрын
@@Spanishwithjackie1914 You might consider using a paper strong enough to take liquid solvents. Canson or Strathmore Bristol Vellum, for example. The benefit of using a solvent like Odorless mineral spirits over your (several) light layers of colored pencils is the very smooth result as opposed to the grainy look of colored pencils without solvent. You only need a small amount. There are videos on KZbin that you could find on this technique.
