The funky rhythm part at 21:38 reminded me of "Why did you do it" by Stretch, a popular dance hit of the '80s. The sound was spot on, as with the "Run to you" intro. You're right, the Intellifex and the Lexicon MPX-1 are the two that can do a lot of things good (I liked your previous Intellifex video, a lot of good sounds). The others have a couple of strong points but not as versatile and good all around.

I got my Intellifex in 1995 along with a JMP1. The moment I heard it I was blown away. Of all the gear i cling on to for sheer quality it has to be these two. Even stands up to my latest Fractal in terms of sound quality but maybe not quite the same in the modelling and effects chains obviously. Like the Lexicon though! I’ll be on the lookout for one of those👍

I bought a Intelli Online (Thats the name) from a friend. Still now, there is no such thing in any Multi-FX you can imagine. You know, it was the cheap answer to the H3000 from Eventide. Cheap...yeah, ok...not really. But it still has a HUSH. I use it every day. This thing is durable, awsome and standing out till so more years to come. Sorry for all never got one. We did! Leon you totaly inspire me with every new video you make. I'm deeply impressed how you guide me through the awesome Sounds of the 80ties and 90ties. Thank you so much! There is a unit that is absolutly underrated in Europe and the US: The Sony MU-R201 alias Ibanez SDR 1000+ or Ibanez SDR 1000. It's kind of the Mother of the Sony DSP R7 and competed with the Roland DEP5 and the Yamaha SPX 90 in its time. Also it was the first unit with stereo prozessing from stereo in to stereo out.

I totally agree with the Intellifex choice. I'd personally mention the Boss GX700 because though it's not the most awesome sounding unit (digital preamp and reverb are kinda meh), it proposes analog drives, full effect-order capabilities with movable FX loop, intelligent harmonizer, delay with 3 fully independent voices... all for about 80 to 150€ on the used market. even some units 3 times more expensive cannot compete :)

@@LeonTodd Hello Leon! I've gained an incredible amount of knowledge about rack gear and effects from your videos, Thank You! I'd have to agree with Chacal CHK Music on the BOSS GX-700 processor. I have one paired with a BOSS GT-PRO Processor. Between those two processors, I can create and record tones that I never thought possible. I'm a big fan of the BOSS rack gear so I have the classic BOSS CE-300 Super Chorus as well. Using the CE-300 Chorus, Reverb from the GT-PRO and the stereo delay from the GX-700 brings forth beautiful, warm, tones. If you haven't tried any of these 3 processors yet, I highly recommend them 👍😎.

I would have replaced the MPX 1 with the MPX G2 - which has the option for inserting a preamp. So basically you have a complete control package, just add a power amp. I have two, one is in my studio and I have multiple preamps in the insert loop via splitter and sub mixer. In my 4u rack rig is a Rocktron 300A, Lexicon MPXG2 (+ the R1 foot controller), Mesa Triaxis and a power amp...into a pair of 1x12 cabs with Celestions. Portable, versatile if you don't need trichorus or dimension D and fantastic sound quality.

The DEP-5 has my favourite delay of all time. There’s a quality to the delays themselves that I can only describe as “grainy halos” that sounds so musical. I’m so tempted to get another so I can run dual delays, though I very much doubt I’ll get one for the £26 I paid for mine! The price in the UK has shot up in recent years. I’m a big fan of the Boss SE-70 too. I ended up with two of them so I could use multiples of the “full fat” effects. That Intellifex sounded great, by the way. You definitely have my interest piqued. Off to eBay I go!

Thanks Leon, you're responsible for my bedroom having like 40 kg box that is next to impossible to lift without ripping yourself, lacking only the MPX100 (but in contrast having SDE-2000 which is super cool "oddity"). Even that is solid in your hands. Undoubtedly not at par with the other effects in terms of sounds, adjustability, UI (well debatable, just turning a knob is very simple but not satisfying) and visual side, but you could get by a gig no problem with it and people probably wouldn't pay attention to it. Maybe they wouldn't think of you as Steve Lukather, but your sound would have delay, reverb etc. It must be harder to make exciting rack videos these days that you've really gone through ~everything that is on the market. But whenever there's a new one, I prepare my coffee and my grin to enjoy the next 15-30 minutes.

I've always preferred rack effects over pedals. A few pedals for added character, sure. But for me, rack effects are just much better and much easier to incorporate into a signal chain. I own a few dirt boxes, but I still use my tried and true Digitech 256XL from the 90's for delay and reverb. To this day, there's no delay pedal or reverb pedal that can outperform it. I even had that Lexicon MPX100 back in the early 2000's, but the Digitech was stilll better.

The "reverb in the delay feedback loop" trick on the MPX is really interesting. I guess it was probably their way of getting around including diffusion on the delays.
@BobGuido
@BobGuido 2 жыл бұрын
@@LeonTodd That trick was invented by Brian Eno, using a mixing console's effects send/return, a Lexicon 224 and Primetime M93 back in 1978 on the Harold Budd album "The Plateux Of Mirror" 😉 It definitely gives the delays extra depth and it is my preferred way to do so because it allows the delay lines to retain more definition with each repeat than diffusion of the delay line does. That Aerosol patch you were playing through comes from the dual effects card for the PCM81 which implements some of the morphing algorithms from the mysterious unicorn known as the VORTEX... which Brian Eno was consulted on. The "[effect] in the delay's feedback loop" thing came from the Lexicon Vortex originally. MPX-1 allowed for deeper access to the algorithm because it has a menu. If the Vortex had been designed with a menu system UI, it would have been one of the most revolutionary and innovative effects devices ever made, but when something is that creative, eventually the bean counters get involved in product design. Many effects devices that could have been really cool suffered from that over the years. Especially products from Roland and Digitech.
@LeonTodd

@LeonTodd
@LeonTodd 2 жыл бұрын
I think there's two appealing aspects - unique tone or function to price ratio. Stuff like the SPX90, TC2290, Roland SDE or Eventide H series have a lot of interesting analog front end and some funky but charismatic tones that nothing else really sounds like. The MPX-1, Intellifex or DEP-5 give you a lot of different sounds for not much money. Dropping over $500USD on any of them when you could get a HX Stomp, Eventide H9 or Poly Beebo for less doesn't really make much sense for most players though IMO.

Hey friend thanks for the great video. I am looking for a processor to capture a library of Billy Gibbons sounds. From the 70's up to the Eliminator and Afterburner albums especially. Is there something you can recommend to me? Thank again. 🎸

You are the right person to solve my question. How much difference between the reverbs of mpx100 vs mpx1 vs pcm series? I only need the reverbs for vocals but quality of the reverb is priority. Thanks.

My all-time favorite is the Digitech DSP256 I believe you already have a video of? The XL maybe? It was the alternative to the Alesis Quadraverb that was the 90s standard pretty much...ZOOM had a pretty unique sounding, the 9010 ... I love the KORG SDD1200 dual digital delay and the Peavey Addverb ... grey, brown and primitive maybe, but works well for guitar :)

I just started watching and already love this video. I knew by the title it would be great. You always give us good info and tones. an, I wanted to jam with ya on that first clean setting at the start. I was humming lead lines to myself. 😂 Great video as usual brother. I will have to look up that thing. It's perfect for me. I love no deep editing and that Lexicon sounded great. ♥️🤘 Great vids as always sir. Be safe and well sir.

Yeah MPX 100! Still have mine in a rack over my amps. Along with a Lexicon Vortex... as well as a Digitech Time Machine 8000, and Ibanez DM 1000. They don't see as much use anymore now that I have an HXFX... But those rack units got me through the 90's and 2000's. Great stuff!

I have an MPX1 and MPX100 and an Intellifex. The Lexicon units sound fantastic and the MPX1 is obviously the better of the two but I found the programming very counter intuitive, especially the MIDI. Bizarrely I ended up using my Intellifex in my live rig over the MPX1 but I am going to sit down one day and try and figure it out and give the Lexi a proper shot.

Intellifex has analog dry through so it messes with the tone way less. the lex verbs are worth the effort though!

I still have my old Roland GP-8….I thought that was the greatest piece of gear ever made back in 88….it was my first multi effect rack unit….after my ART Pro Verb of course…..the Alesis Quadraverb was big back then too…and maybe not the best sounding,but the coolest looking processors of the 80’s was the ART SGE/Multiverb units….it’s cool to look back at these and see how far digital gear has come…

It's finally just really clicking for me what's going on with the death of rack gear currently and why it's an amazing time. I love my rack gear and that which I have and use for guitar is irreplaceable even while running a beast floor unit in parallel, but general-purpose studio use, these are coming to an end. *I'm trying to stay current and realize younger people just load up whichever VST rack gear of their choice, route the PC IN/OUT to their mixer's effects loop, and then can shuffle through whatever it may be while in the studio or even live on stage.* A screen lock app with a playlist and the worries go out the door. All the modern power amps are embedding microcontroller systems so there are crossovers, feedback destroyers etc. built right into the rackmount amps.
