Btw: If need be, the recovery vehicle can take its own engine out and put it into a tank - so it can transplant it's own heart. Pretty impressive.

We did the same demo with my (me being the driver) Leopard 1A3 in 1977. The audience was much closer by in my case and when the engine had been put back in, I was supposed to drive out quickly. To my horror I noticed that my brakes weren't working when I needed them, luckily not driving in the direction of the audience and I could stop it with the emergency hand brake. Turned out the mechanics had forgotten to reconnect the brake hydraulic lines 😨

The trickiest bit is apparently using the guides when installing the new engine if the tank is not on level ground. Thankfully, there are ways and means around that too. My fastest M1 pack change was about 20 minutes, but in the field. We only had 7 people, and 3 vehicles(The M1, a recovery vehicle, and cargo truck delivering the new pack). Usually, if everything goes relatively well it takes closer to 45 minutes, even if in the motor pool. My slowest pack change was about 1 hour 45 minutes. . . in the field, at night, under light discipline(Read outside at night with 0 lights, not even flashlights). The reason it took so long was my rigger didn't see the angle of my cables and we crushed a part on the pack that had to be changed. Craziest pack change I did was changing the pack from the side on an incline. The M1, and recovery vehicle are not designed to swap packs from the side.

Even though I was a Bradley mechanic. I was also M88 qualified I ended up pulling ALLOT of M1 Abrams packs over my 15 yrs. Its a easy pack to pull but sometimes can be a pain to drop back in if the tank is on uneven terrain thus the engine guides don't line up right. But overall its pretty easy to remove and replace. Seeing this video I think it's pretty similar to an Abrams but the Leopard is probably a little quicker to reconnect due to not being a turbine engine. Other wise pretty much the same. P.S. The German recovery vehicle has always looked weird to me with the crane lol. I think I prefer the M88s boom for lifting.

That power pack swap is a design that was adopted by the German engineers while working on a joint venture with the US - Chrysler engineers back in the early 80s before the outcome of the M1 Abrams. USA and Germany built a tank but it had many set backs and major failures, it was scrapped. M1 Abrams was the outcome of the bailout program for Chrysler which is designed with a power pack unit also but it's a turbine engine- transmission instead, and the leopard tank is a V-12 diesel and transmission power pack unit also. It both work well and easy replaceable in the field of operation. Great tanks both and will destroy all Russian junk tanks in today's world.

In the German army, both in the First and Second World War, consideration was given to the way in which its vehicles could be distinguished from other armies. It is the Leitkreuz (NATO rear convoy guidance cross) wich can be used if the vehicle drive without light by night in a convoy. It works togehter with the Blackout light on the front side. The driver can follow the front vehicle in darkness by focussing on the shining Leitkreuz.
@Sxxmaschine

"Leitkreuz" has nothing to do with differentiating from other armies. It is like Rick said a guidance for driving in darkness, however, it is actively lit by a small bulp and doesn't require another tank's black out light. If you get close enough for the light angle to hit the Leitkreuz, you can see the tank's rear with naked eye. And the reason for the cross shape is driving in terrain. You see if the leading tank goes left/right/up/down by having an eye on it's Leitkreuz

@@TheNecavi if its not electric then what is it?nuclear fusion?Look at the size of that thing.....its exactly what a tesla power pack would look like if a tesla was the size of a monster truck. Why the hell would anyone use a battery that big if it wasnt electric?my god who needs a atgm or hellfire missile when the impact of a bullet richocheting off it is enough to set off a chain reaction and battery fire,the battery would literally melt through the tank chassis and incinerate the men. Judging by the power density of todays batteries,its no wonder they need to bring a crane to swap out the power pack.....that thing probably ran out of juice driving from the carpark.

The British Challenger Recovery Tank carries the replacement power pack itself, and indeed is capable of changing it's own pack thanks to the APU driving the hydraulics. Why aren't the Leopards' ack covers hinged thus saving crane time to lift out and re-install? Did they ever think of parking the truck with the replacement engine in such a position that the Recovery tank didn't have to move?
@thomasmueller1745
@thomasmueller1745 Жыл бұрын
The Büffel recovery tank can carry a spare engine on its back. The truck with the spare is placed in a way that spectators still can view what’s happening at the leopard. The demonstration includes to show that the Büffel can drive with the engine on the hook. Oh, and yes, the Büffel could spent his own engine as well.
