When my cousins leopard gecko was a baby, He would scream right before he ate, right before he went to the bathroom, right before he went to sleep and right before he drank water. He screamed until someone came and watched him. He especially hated not being watched as he ate, if u had tried to walk away he would start screaming again. I got my leopard gecko from a pet store. He was horribly thin and I was told by multiple people that I should pick a different gecko because he wouldn’t make it a few weeks. I’ve had him for about five years now. I don’t hold him too much, but he’s never screamed, doesn’t wave his tail often(usually only when I have my cleaning gloves on), and always smiles, even though he came from pretty awful conditions. It’s sad to think what could’ve happened to him. Definitely glad I have him.

Just inherited two leopard geckos over the weekend from friend moving out of town. They've lived in a plastic tub with aquarium gravel for their two years of life. Immediately set out to learn how to properly care for these little guys and found you on KZbin - HUGE THANKS! For everyone who knows a lot about any subject, there are lots of others who are literally just starting out and know nothing. They now have a 40 gallon double door habitat, with lots of stuff coming from Amazon. Heating pad, thermostat, humid hide, calcium, lights, etc. We'll definitely be working on their home to ensure they have plenty of hides, hot/cool areas, proper diet, dig box, plants, and a much better life then they've seen to this point. Hopefully they enjoy! And thanks again for putting out such great content that some of us absolutely RELY on to get a jump start on this new adventure with living creatures. So much to learn
@nightinggale64702 жыл бұрын
That’s awesome! I’d definitely separate them ASAP, though, they’re very likely to fight sooner or later. I have seen countless cases of geckos seeming fine for years, then snapping and seriously injuring or killing each other. 40 gallons is a good size for one, but not two. Dig boxes, while better than nothing, offer nowhere near as much enrichment as half or full loose sub. A soil/playsand or soil/sand/clay mix is best. Heat mats are unnecessary. What lights are you using?
@TheOminousVoidWispers2 жыл бұрын
I'd stay away from heating pads if I were you. Basking light is way better and gives them the uv they need. Good on you for doing right by your little guys

@@TheOminousVoidWispers I have the sun lamp for them and overhead heating lamp. I was worried about hearing pad getting to hot so I put an inch of soil over that area and temp probe says that area stays around 88 day and night which is great when heat lamp and uv lamp are turned off at night.

A note on bites: Leopard gecko bites have the capacity to hurt, but normally only if they manage to pinch the skin. It's just that, 90% of the time, they're going to get their mouth around your finger, or on the flat of your hand, so they don't really pinch any skin. Their jaws are strong relative to their size, but they don't have very sharp teeth. A note on fast tail flicking: Some people also think this behavior could have come about to distract predators while the gecko is hunting and not paying attention. Since the tail can detach in an emergency, it would be a lot more advantageous for the gecko if a predator were to grab the tail than the entire body of the gecko. A note on glass surfing: Female geckos (and sometimes males) may glass surf for all of breeding season, but stop for the rest of the year. My female gecko glass surfs every day during breeding season, but is usually content to just climb on stuff and lay on her favorite spots any other time.

I got bit by one of my geckos and it surprised the dickens out of me, actually made me bleed quite a bit- What you mentioned must have been what happened because usually they don't bite me but I think she was going to eat a cricket and I just didn't realize it.
@danieltaylor41852 жыл бұрын
@@o0gothique0o37 Yeah, when my gecko is hungry, she will hunt my finger, and she has missed the food item when I've tried hand-feeding her in the past. I also was handling her once after getting some vitamin powder on my fingers, and she also bit my finger then as well. Whether or not your finger is going to bleed depends on how your gecko bites it. In my experience, the most common bite is going to be on your finger tip, where it's protected by the finger nail, or the side of the hand where geckos usually have some trouble getting their mouth around your hand. Though, just be wary if your gecko bites you and then releases their grip quickly. If they hang on for a while, that's usually a sign they mistook your hand for food, but quick strikes are a defensive behavior and is a sign that they felt threatened. Defensive strikes are often accompanied by the gecko extending their legs to stand taller, putting their tail up and slowly waving it back and forth, or if they are very stressed out, you might hear them scream or make a kind of quick barking noise.

Fascinating! Our girl 1-2 Leia is doing fantastically well, and is a wonderful addition to our family! She doesn’t seem to mind being handled as long as we are calm and soft spoken. We love her a lot. The tail waggles when she goes after a cricket are the BEST! She was brought to our local Rescue league and a reptile expert had her. We won her in a silent auction quite unexpectedly. If anyone is on the fence and they are a good caretaker, I highly recommend getting one as a pet!

Panther (Pictus) and Coleonyx (Lesser Striped) Geckos are both close cousins dwarfed by the Leos, but for the most part the rule of thumb with them entering brumation is that 1: conditions have to be such that its dry the month prior to Nov/Dec and then you have a wet winter, 2: you need an early frost or something that threatened their food supply, 3: they need to be at or around breeding age or over 19 months, or they need to be gravid 4: food needs to have been scarce for at least 2-4 weeks in shorter quantities but not cut off entirely and 5: they need at least 3-5 inches of substrate to burrow into, or a well covered and deep sided hide. Inducing this in captivity for "more natural" behavior can be dangerous and unnecessary for these animals, and in my personal experiences so far owning Geckos + pythons for about 9 years now, only the Central Banded really benefit from this set of steps, it just stresses my Pictus out because he got used to the warmer temps I can offer. Alternatively, my female Central loves the colder weather being a temperate forest animal, and so does my male. They prefer their tanks in the 55-80F range whereas the Pictus and Leo want to be at 75-85 all day long and can't go under 60. Regional differences in the Turkish, Islamic, and Pakistani Leopard geckos also play a role in how cold they can stand to get, and thus, how likely they are to want to brumate during winter months. Its thought it lengthens their lifespan by a significant amount, and there have been wild and captive examples of Centrals and Leos (who normally live 11and 15-20 years, respectively) oftentimes lived anywhere from 15 yr for Centrals, all the way to 28 years for Leos depending on how often the entered this period of prolonged suspension.

Thank you so much for this video, my leopard gecko is a juvenile and barely ever moves to her cold hide. After watching this, I realized that the light wasn't producing enough heat. After fixing that, my gecko is completely happy and normal! This video is perfect! Definitely subscribing!

Thank you so much for this video. I’ve had my female gecko for over a year now. She’s 2 years old. Now I know why she sleeps all day. And never really eats when I put her bowl of worms during the day. She’s eating cause she poops in her normal spot. I will now just put the bowl at night and remove it in the morning. I will also invest in a different heating pad with a controller for the temperature. Thanks for sharing. Very helpful. Check out my channel I have a bearded dragon also 👍

My male gecko stays up in one chunk from about 7:30 (when I feed him) to about midnight. Sometimes, he gets up really late and I'll wake up to him dragging his glass food bowl around his vivarium, clattering it on everything. He stops when I turn my nightstand light on, and then gets up against the glass to tell me to let him out.

Well you’re adorable. My daughter left me her two leopard geckos when she went to college. I had no idea what to do and your videos have been so helpful. I was told we had 2 males but they were living in the same enclosure and we realized they couldn’t be males because they can’t live together so we tried to watch videos that told us how to tell them apart so then we thought we had two females but then we noticed they were “ fighting” or so we thought ten BOOM, one egg. It did not survive but she continued to lay every 12 to 14 days until she’d laid about 10 an ten she stopped. We just had our first baby hatch not quite a week ago and it’s beautiful. Thriving and now the next two are looking great and should be hatching soon. We tried separating them but they hated it and they were very stressed out. So we put them back together and now they’re very happy. Hopefully she’ll have short periods of hatching and we won’t have too many babies. We are still very much newbies, and still learning. We appreciate appreciate all of your help. We will definitely be separating the babies so that they don’t become attached to one another like these two did.Thank you so much again for all of your help we will continue to subscribe and watch your channels for more help thanks.

Hi Shelly. I think it's great that your willing to learn more about leopard geckos as some people don't. I would defiantly recommend keeping them separate anyway as males do fight the females to impregnate them, they bite their napes so they can't run away, and you will likely have over 30 or 40 eggs a year. Even breeders do not leave the geckos together as they can fight each other, even after being fine for years. You also run the risk of them killing each other or the female dying from over breeding. Even in the wild they do not pair up unless for mating and are very territorial. They may be stressed initially because it'll be a completely different tank than they are used to but they will be happier in the long run and healthier.

Thank you so much for your advice. As hard as it will be I will separate them. She just quit laying eggs a week ago after laying 10. I really don’t want anymore baby’s and don’t want her stressed. The male is a giant but sweet. We did get a beautiful little albino 3 days ago from the last set of eggs that hatched. It’s extremely spunky.

Can a male and a female live together. Will they be happy if they are alone
@lydiaeddins20834 жыл бұрын
Most leopard geckos will fight if kept together. They do not get lonely and will be fine on their own. Males should only be kept with females to breed. Even professional breeders do not keep males with females all the time, because the males can be bullies. Some females can live together depending on personality, but it is better to house them on their own.

Sahyu tends to go off her food from late June to mid July to October. Very few bugs. I still freak out about it. Yet she loses weight very slowly. Last I weighed her, she actually GAINED an ounce since she started, and she only had one large dubia. Leopard geckos are magical creatures.
